Linda Beck is gorgeous! That bloom is perfect. And your daylily bed looks fantastic. I love that little hummingbird...so cute! I never can get ours to stay still long enough to get a picture. I also use shredded dry leaves to mulch my daylilies and roses. Having an acre of land and half of it is woods, I have tons of leaves every fall and DH has a shredder so I put him to work...LOL.

Love the little hummingbird picture. So cute. Linda Beck looks great but for me the gardenshot steals the show. The daylily plants look marvelous for this time of year.

Kay, you put those leaves to goo use! I am lazy though. I don't compost much as in a compost pile. I just pile on the leaves or straw on my gardens. You can call it mulch but you could also say sheet composting as it eventually turns to compost right in place and the earthworms help.

Linda Beck has really put on a show for you this year. What a pretty daylily! I got two last fall from Maryott and tried to overwinter them in pots. I lost one and went down one small fan on the other. I've worked like the dickens trying to keep that one fan alive because your photos of LB have been so gorgeous.

Your fans look healthy and lush. I guess the fish emulsion worked their magic. Many of my daylilies went dormant during August in the areas I don't regularly water. The rain we've gotten this past week should have them regrowing in late September and October.

Kay, I know you have lots more hummers there than I do here in my garden. But I do love to watch them when they are around. Just a little while ago I was watching a pretty little hummer doing her thing feeding at the zinnias right here in the terraces not far from the back door. She kept trying to sit at the edge of the flower the way they would do at a feeder but it didn't work. Too much weight I guess. Eventually she perched on a daylily fan. When she started up feeding again another hummer came along in a great huff and chased the first one away. Made me laugh. I love the little hummers.

LB looks really good and your daylilies look healthy as can be. I have a bloom on Patsy Cline ( new) but acorns bleww onto it and nearlt destroyed the bloom. I'll get one in a few days maybe ( photo)...Lol!! Ellie

Celeste, I did the shredding when I was in a hurry to make a new bed last year, but this year, I just piled leaves up in the large pile. The compost has generated faster than I had had it do before. I could have speeded it up more by turning, wetting, etc, but the heat and the earthworms did their thing and it is lovely, crumbly, deep brown compost.

CTC, the pond has a lot of leveling and soforth to be done, and that will be done when we are actually in fall type weather for more than a day or two. (And I am actually retired)

Rita, that is the boss hummingbird pictured. She chases all other hummers away.

Debra, I got the two Linda Beck plants from Bill also, but planted them in the ground. They have done very well this year.

Rita, it is great fun to watch the hummers. My big zinnias look very tired, but the butterflies are all over them, so I won't pull them now.

This Monarch has been laying eggs. Look on the lower part of photo and see caterpillar.

The sulfurs are fond of the Pente.

And there are a good many Gulf Frits too.

Linda, I think the fish emulsion is good for my plants, but i don't put artificial fertilizers on after the blooms period.

LINDA BECK sure is a pretty one. Gorgeous.I dug up two daylilies this afternoon and potted them up,as if they stayed in the ground,I think they would have died, since instead of growing bigger, they were getting smaller,and I dont want to lose them, so I dug them up.They are both evergreens, so should have been growing nice pretty leaves, not shrinking..I was sitting outside for a little while today,watching 6 little hummers fighting over the feeder.Didn't stay out a long at a time as it turned off really hot today.

I was reading another post where you said you thought you had more rebloom because you fed your plants more and I was wondering what you fed them and about when. I used the fish emulsion and we got lots of rain and most of them look great now, except the ones eaten by the deer. grrrr...... Judy

Love the pic of hummingbird, and the butterflies are pretty. I saw maybe 3-4 beautiful butterflies this year. Mostly cicadas here :) Still shouting every day.

nat, to get butterflies plant some butterfly bushes. They have nice new dwarf forms these days if you don't want the big sprawly kinds. And then plant zinnias. The butterflies love the single flower zinnias, not the poofy dahlia flowered kinds.

Actually, they get all over all of my zinnias, but the butterfly forum does recommend the flatter ones. I have some new seeds to try for next year.

I have several kinds of butterfly bushes. It frustrates me that while butterflies seem to like all of the butterfly bushes, the favorite one is the old purple variety that is illegal in some stated due to it being invasive. I have had this one for fifteen years, and it has sprouted exactly one bush from it that lived about two years. That being said, I understand that a plant that is invasive in one state may be beautiful in another (and no problem in some places).

WE can;t have the water hyacinths here because they are invasive in our waterways. And they are beautiful in a pond. Ah well!

I have digressed as usual, but I am agreeing with Rita. Butterfly bushes are irrestable to butterflies and to hummers too.
