What did you add to your collection this year?

I've lost my mind because not only did I add a newborn to go along with my 20 month old twins, 9 and 7 year old, but I also added 33 daylilies (through the trademart, lily auction, Maryott's sale, and other auctions) and one Hot Papaya echinacea. Most of the daylilies are in pots and I will sink them in the vegetable garden for the winter, then I will have the fun task of finding a home for them in the garden. Here is what I added to the collection since the beginning of August:

When I went to look at my list I nearly fell over. Did I really get that many this year...... Most of what I got were from the hybridizers, a couple from folks as a gift and two I bid on the LA during fund raisers.

Hey T2D, So - you did manager to somehow rid your garden of woodchucks? You don't need to tell us how that was accomplished, but I bet that's a huge relief that plants can actually grow now. Good thing they didn't molest your new orange roses. Your slope area - is that the one you showed in a thread about converting a perennial garden to have more shrubs? I remember you had a sloped area with a nice assortment of mature shrubs. If you changed that area I'd be interested in knowing why, since that is the exact look I am going for. I have not attempted a mosaic but that is a great idea. Are you going to try it? It would be relatively simple: just prep a sand bed, gather an assortment of stones, and arrange/rearrange to your heart's content. In addition to natural rocks, leftover pieces from a place that makes kitchen countertops would be really fun. You could have marble or whatever else suits your fancy. Relaxing in the garden. Huh. Doesn't that seem like the last thing we get around to? :) We're getting better about that too. Our main seating area in the garden now has afternoon shade thanks to maturing trees, and we hang out there a lot more often now. Speaking of goals - I've had a pile of mulch on the driveway for so long I think it's in our Google Earth pictures. But yesterday I shoveled up the last of it and swept the spot clean. Whoa... it feels odd to have it gone. Of course I need more mulch now but we can enjoy the clean, empty driveway for at least a little while, can't we?

Walter I knew you were very knowledgeable regarding iris's and other iris vendors. I have always grown iris's, but only for myself and never really cared about knowing the names of them. I can honestly say I love just about every iris I've ever seen. Some are more outstanding than others but they are all beautiful in their own way. I had no ideal there were so many places to get iris's from at what I consider a reasonable price. Although I've grown them for years most I've bought from Cooleys or a gentleman in North Texas who grew several thousand iris and daylilies. I would go by his house during bloom season and pick out the ones I wanted that fall. When I lived in North Texas I had a friend that belonged to the Iris Society. We would buy and share with one another so we both had starts of all the iris's we ordered. Unfortunately she lost most of her iris's this summer too. I don't think other gardeners can understand and be able to relate to it. That is unless they were to walk outside, look at all their beautiful plants and then think how terrible if would be if they were just all gone. It really is heartbreaking! Recently I ran across Tall Talk on the internet. I really should subscribe to it. Something on one of the cover pages told about the best options for keeping grass out of your iris beds. I wrote the information on a sticky note and only the good lord up above knows where that note is at this time. Actually I had forgotten about Tall Talk since then. When I finish this post I'm going to see if I can google the site again and order it. Unfortunately this summer I lost most of my older iris's that came from my mothers and grandmothers gardens. I guess that is the part that hurts the most. Maybe you can tell me and others what you have to sell and how much they are. I've spent way more than I could afford for this year. I'm including my email because I'm not very good at this stuff and you will probably need it if you send me a list of what you have. Another thing, would you be so kind as to tell me why you plant your iris's in pots? I've never heard of this. Everyone I know just plants them directly in the ground here in Texas. Does it have something to do with the weather where you live? Do you trim the roots way back too? I guess I really should read more about a plant I've grown for years. Mine have always multiplied like crazy with very little care. That is another reason they are one of my favorite flowers. I think it's sad (she says with a grin) when you have to buy a few more to hit "the next big number". I bought (or received in trade) 54 plant this year. And of course I only purchase the must haves off my Lust List! Then I went to First Look (American Hosta Society's event where hybridizers show off potential new introductions). Took in a few tours and garden centers and then there were 19 more to join my "potted" garden. I'm having to buy replacements for those lost to crown rot, so I'm not to anxious to add many new cultivars. Besides, I have exactly 100 cups full of seedlings that will have to be grown in pots. I will be culling a lot of seedlings from the garden this coming spring. Alas, I am so limited on space now.

Ah yes, Nancy, that space thing is what is limiting me. I don't want to enlarge my garden beds anymore, so I am moving one out in order to move another one in.

I don't know about everyone else, but if I didn't keep looking at other people's postings, my list would be shorter. And there are a lot I really want still. Ah well.

Kay: Exactly what I'm doing here but the worse thing I needed to clean up was the double planting of the same cultivar. Then comes the seedlings. Some just have to go.:-(.

That is so pretty, Nancy. Most lovely purples like that tend to be pink or reddish here, such a disappointment. that one is really a beauty. Just lovely.

These are plants I ordered before Xmas. On April 5th I lost my Cassie, a Duck toller golden mix to cancer. ALthough I planted every DL it wasn't the same without Cassie following me around. Tollers are so happy and smile alot. I got a new little dog[Trixie] from a shelter in July. Now I have to train her to stay out of the gardens...:).....The following plants were planted this spring. I don't expect to buy much new.

All I can say you're in very good company, as I've also lost my mind. This fall I removed another 25 from the garden, but somehow the number on my inventory list didn't go down one little bit. Ugh.
When you attend Regional and National meetings, you can't help it. They give you gift plants and it is just too tempting on the auctions, etc. These are the ones I've added since early summer.

Same with Earl Watts plants. I saw so many of them looking wonderful at the Reg. 14 meeting and am anxious to try some of them here! And who doesn't love Jamie Gossard's plants? They perform like champs here. Yep, a sickness, no known cure!

I think I added around thirty more or less got rid of some old ones that didn't do well so I would have room. I don't have my list on this computer so won't list them. Each year I say that is it I will add no more. Well I already have one ordered for next year.

Don't want to go there. lol I had bought only a few this fall, but a friend in the garden club was evicting some nice daylilies for space and some wandered my way. I may not end up keeping then after they bloom next year, but I wanted to see what they looked like before deciding. And a few wandered over from Dad's house.

I have several things planted WAY too close together pending what I decide to do with them next year, But as we split the free daylilies between Dad, myself, a new garden club member, and lined some out for the club sale next spring, they were small enough I could crowd them on purpose short term. Well I just started collecting this year, I was having problems with my on again/off again lantana that I decided I was removing most of it and replacing with a different perennial. Well as you can guess the rest is history...lol

I added quite a few dayliilies this year; unfortunately, due to enormous upheaval/family issues this spring that have, among other things, rendered roughly one third of our house nonfunctional (STILL nonfunctional! because some rooms are full to bursting with other people's stuff), I have no idea where I've placed this year's order forms and lists. lol-Rena-I thought I had gone daylily crazy this year. I had to get rid of several to make room, some I sold in the spring, some I have divided up and potted for next spring's plant sale. Others that I know I am going to get rid of are still in the ground, but I don't want to pot up any more for this year. The ones I plant and sell are my daylily budget for the next year.

Nate I love ordering from Maryott too! I got my 2nd order placed minutes before their deadline of noon (Cali. time is what saved me).

So I also have Lida Sierra coming also plus bonus?
Yes Lisa, it's a way to splurge on your garden/obcession without shouldering any guilt from all the money poured into it! Don't forget we're combatting global warming here!!
It's a tough job but somebody's gotta do it! lol

Well I won a few auctions today on the LA

Water Drops (well technically didn't win this one, but the seller gave me a price I was happy with so I added it to my order with Get Jiggy)

And I'm going to add one more to another order Lillian's Ginger Bred, that's a Buy It Now on the LA as well.

And then NO MORE window shopping for me! lol

And I have a large trade to complete with a great GW friend and then I'm done!

Nat4b--Our club has a sale in May. We get 1/2 of profit, the club gets the other 1/2-but they use it for local parks so I don't mind. Debating doing a farmer's market or lily auction or something, because I always have more than I sell at the sale. The local greenhouse has been sending out feelers to gardeners that might like to do a farmers market. They sell mostly veggie plants and annuals and have a small florist business.
