Change GardenWeb's Mountain Snow pic?

Mountain Snow is a fine hosta...but I think there are so many others that are much more stunning...like hosta Liberty! What do you think...could we all get together and request GardenWeb to post Liberty in the righthand corner rather than Mountain Snow? If they consent to doing so, then we could all submit photos of Liberty and vote on who has the best pic!

Hey,what a nice surprize to see your post Linda. It's about time you showed off your birdhouses. You are gonna love all the creative ladies on here, and I told you they would just love seeing your birdhouses. Linda, if you are using photobucket, try clicking on your pics, go to the bottom of the page, select "generate img and html code". It will take you to the next page. I just click on the first option, then right click and select "copy". Now come back here and type your message. Then right click and select "paste". Your post with the pictures will show up when you hit "preview message". You can post multiple pics from the same page this way. Give it a try and ask questions if you need more answers. So glad you decided to join in here. And you know these ladies will want to see pics of all sides of that birdhouse. Luvs ( aka Kay )

Hello Everyone I have had problems getting into the GardenWeb forums, but it looks like the issue has been fixed. What I wanted to really know is, is this forum still viewed by anyone? I could take some pics of a couple units that I modified last summer. I currently have about 8 snowblowers. -Toro 3521 (I a couple of years ago put a 11 hp engine on this. But we did not get enough show for me to pull it out. I also took the engine off because it had to sit back a little too far. So it made the snowblower too light in the front. I would have had to add weight to the front to keep it down) -Toro 521 (have 2 units. One modified with 7.75 hp OHV it's awesome). MTD 524 (have 2 units. One modified with 11 hp OHV). -Ariens 520 1984 model Just picked it up for $50 not running and in very good shape. I will try it out before I do any mod's to it. -Montgomery wards 524 1980 Looks almost new never repainted, paid $40. -Honda HS520 I picked it up not running for $100 has electric start. Gee, Kat, why didn't you just shovel it all onto your grass? LOL! Should I stop making "helpful" suggestions! Shoveling it ANYWHERE is hard enough! Sorry to hear yours all landed in the Wrong Place! MANY years ago (back in the early 70's!) I lived in a little house in far south Aurora, and we got a storm like this last one, but even more snow and even more wind, and the way it happened to blow between the neighbor houses it ALL seemed to wind up RIGHT in front of our garage! It went all the way up to the roof, and if the snow had been hard enough we could have walked up the Snow Mountain and walked straight onto the roof! When we first went out after the storm and saw it, it was hard to really believe there was THAT much snow there! So I do know where you're coming from! It was kinda like: Could we possibly dig a tunnel thru it to drive the car out of the garage--rather than having to shovel it ALL!!! As near as I can tell I wound up with about 15" total. When I finally got out to measure it today I was getting 14", but the sun had been shining on it for quite a while at that point, and there was no question that it was well into the process of "settling down!" But one thing I know for sure; there is a LOT of moisture in it, and it really is gonna do a great job of watering everything. When I looked out the front door last nite about 12:30, trying to figure out just how hard it was still snowing, I noticed some flashing lites at the end of the block, and then I heard, Beep, Beep, Beep! It took a minute to figure out what was going on in the middle of the nite, but there was a city plow out there plowing the residential streets. When I looked more closely--over the shoveled pile along my walk, I discovered they had already plowed the road in front of my house! I thought that was kinda nice of Thornton--even if I don't need to go anywhere! And with the sun today now the plowed part is bare and dry again. Lots of piles, still, along the edges where people have shoveled their walks and drives--and shoveled out their cars that were parked on the street! By the end of the week we're supposed to be well back up into the 40's and maybe even back up to the low 50's so I'm guessing that even most of the piles will be gone by next weekend if they're in the sun! That's the kind of snowstorms EVERYBODY should have! Shhhhh! Don't tell anybody else about out Miraculous Disappearing Snowstorms or everybody will be moving here! We need to keep this to ourselves! Do any of you remember the March Blizzard of 2003? Funny story! I was working in San Fran at the time, and commuting back and forth, and the Blizzard happened when I was on the west coast. Being in the Airline Business, needless to say I was hearing plenty of stories about how bad it was and about all the flites that were being cancelled. The total (official) snowfall was just short of three feet (in about 24 hours I think it was), and when I had days off and was able to come home again it was on the third day after the storm, and I REALLY wanted to come home so I just made up my mind that I'd shovel my car out of the parking lot--no matter how long it took, and find some way to get home! I got back to DIA and onto the parking lot bus, determined that I was just gonna change into my Survival Clothes that I had in the car and start shoveling, and then we got to the parking lot! Except for the humongous--and I DO mean humongous, piles of snow where it had been plowed, all the cars and roads in the parking lot were DRY! I almost fell over! When I got out onto the two-lane road I took home (for those of you who don't know, DIA is out on the plains, halfway to Kansas!) the road was completely dry--and there were huge 6-8' piles of snow ALL along the road--I couldn't see over the top ANYWHERE! It was like being in a maze where all you could do was to keep going the way you were going! I felt like I was in an hallucination of something! Got back more into the Metro area and, except for the piles along the streets, you could hardly tell there had been a blizzard. I've lived out here since '64, and I KNOW how fast it melts, but even I could hardly believe what I was seeing that time! This IS the place to live! Skybird

Coeur d'Alene had 127 inches of snow by yesterday and then a little more fell. This was a new seasonal record and nearly double normal. Seems like when I lived right in town about 30 years ago, there was more snow to deal with. I think that might be true but with a certain amount of melting, some drifting, and days of shoveling - it's real hard to make much sense out of the landscape. I'm considering "burrowing" next. There were winds of 35 - 40 mph with gusts near 50, today. Lots of roads in and out of communities in the Columbia Basin are closed because of drifting and white-out conditions. I think it is now going to turn to rain except for up where you are, Margaret. And, even western MT may get rain by Sunday. Hopefully, there won't be very much. digitS'

Good luck with that. It has been suggested to change that dumb picture several times in the past 10 to 15 years that I've been coming here, each to no avail.

I remembered this thread that Don started last year suggesting Liberty for the photo at the top right of the page. Viewing Papou's photos especially of his Liberty reminded me of this. So I sent a message to GardenWeb through the 'contact us' link at the bottom of the main page. I got an email back from Tamara Amey of GW saying that if we could all agree on a picture she would be happy to change it.

The two Hosta suggested above were June and Liberty. Let's use this thread as a means of voting. From the votes above I count 3 votes for Liberty, and one for June. You can vote for one of these two or suggest one of your own. I'll tabulate the results and then send them by email back to GW with a picture. If you've got a picture that you think might be used please post it in this thread.

Oh, and no negative advertising by outside Super Pac groups.

I love June, but I think Liberty would be a good choice. So another vote for Liberty.

My vote is for Liberty. I have a nice Liberty photo, but it would be much better if someone could photoshop the plant marker out of the picture.

Liberty. and as much as I appreciate the idea of using Papou's pic, that one by Wendy is breath-taking. Its edge is so wide that it's almost a new cultivar. Nance

Possibly a 3 or 4 picture .gif file that rotates could be uploaded? I think thats fairly simple and low tech..

On a side note, what was the story on the Liberty's in regard to Papuu? I showed up after his time, but I think I heard it mentioned.. Did he share a bunch of starter plants?

Thanks, UK, and everyone else for weighing in. It seems like it should be Liberty. The best picture I have is an early season picture from the Seawright Display Garden. Here it is:

Let's decide on which photo. Thus far we have photos from Don R, Wendy, UK and the Seawright photo. Merle, do you have a Liberty photo? Anyone else have a good one to share? Let me know which photo you like.

I vote for don r's photo. Perfect condition and the color looks good plus no debris or anything on the leaves and you can see the leaves well. Perfect photo.

The Liberty pictures shown above have too many leaves to be placed into that small picture. You want to have leaves on a Liberty at least as large as Mountain Snow has in that picture real estate. (that is not in real inch size of the leave, but in % of the GW picture). Or you could show only the centers of above Liberty pictures.

Bernd the photos can be cropped down and resized to the proper size and look perfect and the whole plant will fit in.

I agree Bernd. I think the Seawright pic is too close. I took it with my cell phone. I think either UK's pic could work if it was cropped properly and I also like Wendy's pic with the yellow companion flowers. I agree with Wendy that the tag should go if possible. Does anyone have good editing skills with Photoshop elements or other editing software?

Here's UK's Liberty with a little bit of cropping and some edge blur. I'm trying to make it pop out from the photo. That's about the most I can do with iPhoto.

Steve, is that Robert Seawright in Carlisle MA?
That's where I picked up a LOT of hostas after he'd closed for the season, but because DH and I and he liked the same book, he opened up and gave us a real deal that I could not refuse.

And, Liberty is awesome. For many reasons, it would be a perfect choice as the new standard bearer for the Hosta Forum.
