IMHO most Hoyas hate to have wet feet and letting it soak up the water might be a death sentance for them! They are better off on the dry side than too wet. I do not let mine sit in any water(except for my Multiflora which sits continually in water). I pour off any water that drains out of the pots.

It all depends on what kind of Hoya you have! For the most part, if you soak, you will be sorry:-(

I move my plants into the shower before watering. That way, I can water them from the top, and continue to water them (even as water pours out the bottom) until the soil is thoroughly saturated. You'll know when this happens, because the pot becomes noticeably heavier.

As for bottom watering, it depends on what you mean. Diane is right, leaving your pot sitting in a tray of water will most likely kill the plant.

But if you simply mean placing the pot in a bucket of water and moving it once the soil becomes saturated (after a few minutes), you should be fine.

I didn't mean leaving the pot soaking, but removing it once it's saturated. Thank you for the responses!

Hi Andrew, I think it depends on your potting medium and how root-bound your plant is. If you're using a loose medium with a lot of, say, charcoal and moss, that dries out quickly, it's okay to let it drain out the bottom. But if you're using a denser medium that doesn't dry out quickly, be careful. Stick your finger all the way to the bottom of the pot to see if it's dry before watering again. My 2 cents (and I used to kill a lot of hoyas from overwatering).

Hi Andrew, We don't use clay pots so this may not be of use but my wife and I travel a lot (retired) and we made a rule that any plants we have must be able to survive 21 days without our care so we put everything in self-watering pots. These plastic pots are designed to water from the bottom through special construction. We put all our hoyas in the same pots and they have done great. we also do most other things wrong too, we rooted many hoya by just dipping in root stimilus and planting directly in potting soil and it worked. maybe ignorance is bliss.

I grow my heavier Hoyas in clay pots & water through til it spills out the bottom a bit. But I keep all of mine on pebble trays, so the water spills out onto the pebble trays which the pot sits ON TOP OF, not in.

Yep, I drench my plants in clay until it pours out the bottom...I usually do this two or three times when watering so they are well watered, then I wait unti lthe leaves are asking for water before watering again. It also keeps the salts leached out of the pot better when watering this way.

Funny now that I think about it, none of the plants I have in plastic pots are doing as well as those in clay.
