black spots on hoya leaves

Here is a pic to go along with my post in the discussion area. This is the underside of a leaf that I pulled off my plant. The black ONLY occurs on the undersides of the affected leaves. Not on the upper leaf surface. There is a little brown splotch in the upper corner- that's not a bug- I had to dig the leaves out of the garbage to take a pic, so.... please don't think that chocolate cake is some type of creepy crawler:o) The largest black blotch on there is from where I tried to scrape off the black stuff with my fingernail and a soapy scrubby pad. It didn't work by the way. When I look a little closer, it almost seems like the black stuff is under the surface of the leaf. Any ideas anyone? Thanks- Crystal

Hi Sara, The leaves do feel very firm and the vines look like they are healthy also. I treated the leaves to a Neem spray because this is supposed to help combat fungus, as well as pests. I leached the soil also in case it had been over fertilized by the grower. Someone has said that over fertilization can cause the black/brown spots as well. It just seems so odd that the spots occur only on the back sides of the leaves. I also put a peeled clove of garlic down in the soil, as it is also supposed have natural fungicidal properties. Yet another person has said to rub cinnamon on the affected leaves. Within a month or so of the cinnamon treatment, the spots may fade. Either nothing will happen with all these treatments, or some VERY interesting things will happen.:) I won't throw the plant away, just cuz I'm curious to see how it all turns out. I will, however, isolate it from my other plants in case whatever is ailing it is contagious. Thanks, Sara, for your input. GH

Looks like a fungal infection.Could result in leaf loss if it overpowers the plants immune system.I use Captan fungicide on my plants if they have black spot or other fungal problems.its in a powder that you mix in a spray bottle.clears it up after 3 or 4 applications. Very possible that the little black fellows are aphids. If so, they suck plant sap and will weaken the plant. Rub them off, or use direct hits of insecticidal soap, diluted according to label directions. In both cases, repeat as needed. I'm not able to see enough detail to suggest what the white might be.

Hi! Anyone know what these black spots are? I’m guessing it’s fungus since I put it in a humidity bag. I took it out of the bag now. Do I need to treat it with something or cut off the tip of the leaf to prevent it from spreading? I’ve seen another post about black spots but they look different. Thanks!

I took off all leaves that had even one spot on them. They were pretty much all at soil level. Then I just made sure to let it dry thouroughly. I might have sprayed the base of the flants with a fungicide, but I can't remember now. I don't think I did. Hopefully it won't happen to you, or if it does, you'll catch it sooner. My plant is doing well now though.

Geez, I am not sure what a flants is, but I think it might be something like a plant:o) I guess there is a reason that you should preview your messages instead of clicking right through. This from a spelling bee champ! Crystal

Teehee, Crystal ;-) I'm a spelling freak myself, but every once in awhile, I have a typo and it gets past me and I feel like a numbskull (did I spell that right??) Nice to know someone else as anal about spelling as I is capable of an error. BTW, thanks for the additional info.
