I was wondering how long you keep hosta pictures stored or saved.I use photobucket and I have pics of hostas that are two or three years old.I plan on deleting most and starting over with more up to date pics for this summer.How far back do you think people search for alphabet pics or hosta postings,

six months,a year,two years.Actually it probably does not matter one way or another but I am curious as to what others do.Phil

Since Photobucket changed to unlimited storage, I've stopped worrying about deleting/housekeeping for now. Eventually I will probably delete some again. I know it's frustating when you do a search and you see file removed message in place of the pics. I would think 2 years seems pretty forgiving in general.

once posts fall to the 3rd page .. i delete old pix ...

and i presume.. you have them properly stored on your own computer???

i simply do not want to have 50 pages of pix.. to flip thru.. to look for the one i want to post ... they are in alpha on the hard drive.. and easy to find ...

To revert to your original post, if you want another spring-flowering, small tree of a different color - redbud, crabapple (some are white flowered), Flowering cherry, etc. - would be a good substitute. Fringe tree is another one, but IS white flowering, and is late to leaf out. Hawthorns (some are native and some European or hybrids) do have white flowers for the most part - some have red - but the red fruits are interesting, and some have good fall foliage - being members of the rose family, they can get common rose family diseases, including fire blight, and they do have thorns. If you want a summer flowering tree, then there are possibly one of the hardier crape myrtles, stewartias (possibly not hardy), franklinias, and a few others - some of which will also have white flowers. You might also be able to grow and limb up a Peegee hydrangea, although the weight of the blooms will bow down the branches to a degree. If you can find one, a sourwood is summer-flowering, whitish and come in July-Oct., with good fall foliage. Virginia Witch hazel flowers in the fall, with yellow flowers - there are hybrids with European varieties, which might be hardy for you, in orange to red colors, that flower in early spring. Fall foliage is yellow.

Something that I found out about stubbern hoyas that done want to grow is to change there soil to an more airey mix.I've been using half growstones,the smaller size and half coco curtons.I also add a few handfulls of repti bark,and a bit of charcholl.it makes for a good consistancy.Latifolia ,and and a few others are putting out new growth just after 3 weeks in the new mix!I find Mindorensis,does well under led lights.Polyneura,has its boughts with the leaves yellowing,but seems like a good candate for S.H...It has started new growth in under one month..outside in Augest!!And Rina...We exchange info about hoya plants on this forum.If you have nothing to offer about hoyas...please take your rant elsewear!Oh something else...If you have an unhappy hoya in a pot that is too big(I like the fancy ceramic ones you find at walmart and big lots..usually the 6 inch dia. ones)I bought some if the 5 inch plastic mesh pots through Amazon.just replant the hoya into the mesh pot with a chunky mix and place it in the ceramic pot! it makes a great fit and the mesh provides the oxygen to the roots,while the ceramic keeps it from drying out too fast...works great!

Our price for concrete was just over 7k, and that was adding on a few extra yards for waste. My uncle will be helping and he's been pouring basements since he was 15. We're paying for concrete only in this one. Between my uncle and us, we have all of the perimeter drain, rebar, and waterproofing materials required. The basement will be staying unfinished for now. We have a backhoe at our disposal and a bobcat here, so we will be doing all of the excavation as well. We have construction workers of all types as friends and family, so we won't have a shortage of extra hands. It only took 4 of us to finish the basement at my in-laws a couple years back. There basement was 160 sq. ft. smaller, but a walkout and 3 ft knee walls. Their cost was $6k and they hired out some of the work. We are trading logs for the insulation, so no cost there. Our insulation man is also the Amish man who cuts all of our lumber. Once again, we're paying about $.20 a board foot lumber, and most of that has been traded in logs that he in turn sells to the local furniture maker. Our trusses and the rest of the framing were estimated at $6k from the Amish lumberyard. So that puts us at $13k. We have over 1000' ft of electrical wire and two 200 amp main breakers, so worst case scenerio is we might have to buy another couple rolls. 1000 ft rolls are $450. Say 2k tops for boxes, outlets, switches, and there is already electric service to the area. There is also a waterline trenched in, that we had done when they first dug the well when we moved in, knowing that we would most likely build back there in the future. It just needs to be connected to the well and line run there to the jet pump in the house. We have all of the extra materials and pump required to get water in to the house already. Pex for water supply will run under $1000. I'm still under $15k here I think. We already have an outdoor furnace and the duct work to get it through the majority of the house. Say another $1k for conservative estimate for more duct work if we need it. I don't think we will though. No A/C, because we've lived without it most of our lives, I don't see any reason to spend the money on it now. It can easily be hooked up though in the future. #2 metal roofing runs about $90-100 a square. So approx. $3-3.5k for the roof. Let's say we're at $18k here, because I don't want to add up anything else. That leaves approx. $17k for everything else or any added expenses that I didn't include. I'm not including cost of our time, because we can't afford to pay for ourselves. We have friends and family that have offered to help if we need it, and I think there are a few that will dedicate some of their weekends and evenings to helping on a regular basis.

Well, it got colder than predicted last night at my house, I should have covered more! Luckily all my potted stuff was in the heated greenhouse. I've had my weather station so long, that that particular model is discontinued. I liked it because it was wireless and battery AND solar powered. There are several really good models out there now. For maintenance on mine, all I have to do is change the batteries once a year and while I'm up there I clean out the rain gauge. The hard part really is just the initial setup and getting it connected to your computer. There's software you have to install too, which connects to WUNDERGROUND and you can get that off the WUHU Yahoo groups page. A good place to start looking for a station is ambientweather dot com, once you find what you like you can google the brand and see if you can find it cheaper elsewhere... Kevin

I keep them all because I like to see how much a plant has changed through the years. Also, I'm a bit of a picture hoarder. lol! I did, however, lose a ton of pictures when my old laptop suddenly died on me (and hadn't backed them up except the few on Photobucket and Facebook) and I was in mourning for a few months over it. I lost other things too, like most of the novel I had been writing, lists of my plants and such that maybe someday will redo if I feel the ambition to do it again. The novel, though, was better for it. What I've rewritten is better than what I wrote to begin with. But the loss still hurt. I've learned to back-up my stuff a little better now. :)

I just signed up for an additional username with 2012 added on to it since the other username has about 1,000 phtots in it. I will do the same thing again next year.

franknjim, you can create additional folders/albums (i.e. 2012, 2013...) within photobucket.

I have already done that with folders in subfolders. Another reason that I do the secondary account is because of bandwidth restraints on free accounts.

There is no ultimate bandwidth limit on Photobucket. You are limited by how much you can upload in a month, but not by a total limit. Even when I posted all those photos from the 2011 convention, I only approached the monthly limit. I think it's 3 gigabytes, or something like that. Typically, I don't come close.

They do meter the bandwidth and can cut you off is they feel your bandwidth use is excessive unless you pay for an account.

This is from their FAQ for going with a Pro account.

When you go Pro:

Ã¯Â¿Â½Your account not only includes unlimited storage* but also unmetered bandwidth (Photobucket reserves the right to disable direct linking on accounts that use excessive bandwidth or otherwise abuse the system).

I would encourage everyone to leave their pics posted as long as possible. Like previously mentioned, it's very frustrating to do a search for a particular hosta and then to find out the pic has been removed. IMO, it would be far better just to leave all the pics posted on your current Photobucket account, and either create a new sub-album or get a new Photobucket account for pics you intend to post this year.

I'm backing my stuff up a few different ways: on disk, in Dropbox, the pictures in Photobucket and Facebook (and disk), and I've been emailing my novel chapters to myself. Need to get a flash drive, though. More places to save my documents on the better. I learned my lesson.

Karen, I agree with what Paula said about 2 copies - I have a portable drive (actually 2 alternating) that are continuously backing up new and changed files automatically. At the end of month, my wife brings one back from her office desk and I swap out with current one at home. So I always have a backup in two different locations - one current and one thru end of past month.

I also use 2 backups from my computer's My Documents : a portable hard drive and a memory stick.

I've worried about losing my stash of photos, even the ones I burned into a CD and now into DVDs. sometimes they become unreadable.

But my ultimate is an external harddrive, USB Western Digital 1T (1000 gig) and I love it. I unplugged it from my new computer and brought the entire drive with me to access via my old laptop while staying at my brother's in New Orleans.
My Windows 7 computer thinks it is a great spot to back up my entire new computer as well. But for that I have a second 1T external harddrive. I forget now why I bought it. But if one is good two has to be better. No kidding. That's the way I think. I've been lucky for a very long time, and it makes me uneasy because odds are not good for it to continue uninterrupted. Oh yeah, the little external drive is not much bigger than a smart phone. Tiny. Easy to carry.
