Sun...dappled shade...sun...dappled shade...sun

Hi all,

My goodness, I've been away from this forum much too long. It will take me hours catching up on all the great advice you all are sharing. I am planning (on graph paper) a new garden area that will receive full sun, followed by dappled shade from Silver Maple trees, followed by full noon sun, again followed by dappled shade, and finally full late afternoon sun. In this garden area I already have Hostas, 'June', 'August Moon', and 'Gold Drop'. They all do fine in this crazy light situation. I'm looking for more Hostas that can tolerate these light changes, and also have good slug resistance.

Hmmm, Sum and Substance comes to mind, as well as Plantaginea, Inniswood, Guacamole, Regal Splendor,
Francee, Sum of All, to name some that do well in my yard with some of both the conditions you describe.

I think it depends on how long they would be in full sun!

All the ones I've mentioned can handle the sun!

probably all of them ..... in WI ...

the blues might not appreciate the sun in the heat of the day ..... and ones with big white centers may melt out in TOO much sun .. but need more sun because of the reduced amount of chlorophyll .... real catch 22 there ....

regardless... the more sun ... the faster they grow .. and the faster they mature .... the further south you go .. the more problematic afternoon sun becomes ....

bottom line... PLANT WHATEVER HOSTA YOU WANT .... and if it doesn't thrive ... to your satisfaction ... MOVE IT ....

hosta actually do grow on driveways ... so your little patch of heaven .. shouldn't really be that much of a problem ....

when it comes to hosta.. JUST DO IT .... worry about it later .... heck .. with hosta.. you dont even need to worry about it ....

Did you start planting yet? Have fun! You mentioned that this is your first year buying bulbs, are you all set on how to plant? Since it looks like you have a lot I just wanted to suggest planting the smaller ones as quickly as possible. Dig one hole at sorta the right depth, dump in a good sized handful of bulbs and cover. Don't get caught up too much on if they're pointing up, if they are spaced exactly correctly, if the depth is perfect.... They just need to get in the ground and you need to enjoy doing it! The crocus, tulips, and lilies will be most at risk for voles..... Maybe the camassia. You can either cage them in or plant them in pots, your garage sounds good just be careful when bringing them out, in my experience they will die if refrozen once shoots are sprouting. You could try planting in pots and then putting that pot into the ground. Just keep the rim level or above soil level and keep the pot full of soil so it doesn't hold water. Don't mulch, the voles will hide under the mulch and use the cover to go over into the pots. Lmk if what I wrote makes enough sense. Good luck! .... Fragrant Rhododendron full sun/ dappled shade

Full shade, scented, & summer interest is a tall order. Most rhododendrons will not bloom well or at all in full shade. Scented is doable, but only when they bloom. Summer interest most likely will be foliage. Here is a rhododendron with fragrant flowers and tolerant of shade: Janet Blair – 5', -20F. 'Janet Blair' has large, fragrant, frilled lavender pink flowers fading to a pale center and topped off by a blotch of yellow rays on the upper lobes. Blooms third week of May, and is better in moderate shade than most other varieties. Very fragrant. May blooming. Prefer moist, humus-laden, acidic soil but seem to do equally well in shade or sun. Bow Bells – 3', -5F. The pink flowers are followed by shiny, copper colored new leaves. As the season progresses, the mound becomes a superb jade green with rose-red bud scales for another show of color. Fertilize lightly if at all, as an excess of fertilizer will cause foliage burn more easily than on most rhododendrons. Boule de Neige – 5’, -25F. The flowers are white, It blooms well in deep shade. Elviira – 2', -30F. It grows well in shade. Flower buds open bright red. Loderi King George – 6', 0F. Huge pale pink flower clusters that turn white as they mature. If given enough shade they are also drought tolerant. Nova Zembla – 5', -25F. Dark red flowers in a ball-shaped cluster. Shade tolerant. P.J.M. hybrid rhododendrons. Rhododendrons in the 'P.J.M.' group are smaller, growing to a height of 3 to 5 feet tall. Form is rounded and the foliage is leathery and dark green until fall when it turns almost purplish. One of the reasons rhododendrons in the 'P.J.M.' group are such heavy bloomers is that the plants do not set seed. They are among the most shade tolerant rhododendrons. They include the following: Black Satin – 3', -20F. It has dark rose-pink flowers. Fall and winter foliage is glossy and very dark purplish-black. Desmit – 1', -20F. It has vivid, showy, pink flowers. Elite – 4', -25F. It has vivid, showy, rich pink flowers. Henry's Red – 4', -25F. It has vivid, deep red flowers. Low Red Frilled 4', -25F. It has vivid red flowers. Molly Fordham – 4', -20F. It has vivid, white flowers. Olga Mezitt – 3', -25F. It has vivid, peach-pink flowersl. Regal – 5', -30F. It has vivid, light purplish-pink flowers. Victor – 4', -25F. It has vivid, light purplish-pink flowers. Weston's Pink Diamond – 5', -10F. It has frilled, double, vivid, pink flowers. Ramapo – 2', -25F. Flowers are bright violet-pink. Tolerates shade. Red River – 5', -20F. It is a red flowered maximum. It has the late bloom and the large leaves of maximum. The flowers, larger than maximum's flowers, are bright red with a white throat and small yellow dorsal flare. Tolerates shade. Snow Lady – 2.5', +5F. The picture was taken in the morning; these plants face south, so they are only in shade until late morning, and then they get a strong, south/southwestern exposure the rest of the day. These are all drought-tolerant plants that can take a lot of sun and reflected heat from the concrete around the pool, including buddleia, argyranthemum (marguerite), phlomis, pelargoniums, grasses, succulents, etc., many of which probably wouldn't work for your shady situation. The background, which I refer to not-so-affectionately as Hedgezilla, is podocarpus gracillior, which provides great screening, but is a maintenance chore which I would have torn out in a second if I could afford to and plant something more interesting besides "green concrete". However, my neighbor planted two p. gracillior as an untrimmed tree-sized screen in a shady, north-facing exposure three years ago, and now they are at least 20 feet tall. There was a house in HB on the Heard garden tour this year with a south-facing exposure that featured, surprisingly, several beautiful Japanese maples. I would have asked if they did anything special, but I didn't have the time. Anyway, I suppose it's possible to grow them, but I'm guessing they baby them. IMO, many plants are more forgiving of a little too much shade, than a little too much sun. Some plants may get a little rangey in the shade searching for the sun, but you can always trim them. Others may not bloom, but plants with colorful foliage can take care of that. Sometimes only trial and error will help you find out what will work and what won't. I was just reading in the current issue of Garden Gate about an average-sized yard in which the amount of sun varies from two hours a day to six hours a day from one end of the bed to the other.

I have Salvia Greggi, Hot Lips, Indigo Spires and Black & Blue. They get their fair share of full sun and are growing very well. I planted another Black & Blue in a very bright area where it gets no direct sun and it is growing and blooming well. We will see on its 1st anniversary next May. Hot Lips has not been pruned and is huge; has appropriated almost two feet into the driveway! I water them with drip irrigation and keep them very well mulched. Except for the newly planted Black & Blue, the others are older, 1-3 years old. Have fun picking some and planting them. Just remember to water them specially well this time of the year. Luis in Hurst, TX PS - Because it is so hot now, you may want to consider buying now but planting them in the Fall. That's is what I usually do during June thru August. The downside is that I have to water any purchases often (almost daily) while they are in the pots. But, I keep the pots in a part shade area together and near a water source. PS PS - The weather forecast for Saturday calls for temps in the 80s! ALL RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Ken's advice on Hostas. Just do it! :) It's when I start trying to analyze what I'm doing that I end up in trouble! (And also, when I have 50 or 60 hosta waiting to be planted and it's mid-September, but that's another problem.)

O.K. Thanks all you zone 5-ers. Yes, that is the wonderful thing about gardening - moving plants to more desirable spots when a present location is not working.
My husband and a neighbor felled a giant dead oak tree in our back yard late last summer. I had several varieties of Hostas growing under it, and once it was gone, they were receiving instant half day sun. I panicked and quickly moved most of them to shadier locations. Now, using hindsight (always 20-20), I probably should have left them to see which would adapt.

You have described not only my own back yard,fraught with hosta and trees but a perfact area to grow Hosta in case you weren't thinking of it,(smile). Choose from all the lovlies and then water. They will all excel.

I have simular light conditions in the 2 areas I'd like to plant mine (seeds recieved in trade). I imagine WI summers are cooler than Eastern WA summers, but does that mean the sun's intensity is equal because we are northern states? Plus here we lack summer humidity in temps that exceed 90+ for weeks.

Hi Vera,
I was born in Puyallup, WA. I'm sure you know where that is, but we moved to WI when I was a year old. I've been back there to visit a few times, but mostly to visit relatives in Tacoma. As I can recall, Eastern WA is much different than Western WA......Eastern WA much flatter? Anyway, about the weather here - you can expect anything and everything. Our summers can be extremely hot, in the 90's,or 100's, dry or humid, droughts and flooding, long cool rainy Springs that never seem to end, or so short we seem to go from Winter to summer. (Same for Fall) No matter what the weather is, the Hostas survive. And as Ken mentioned above, plant whatever you want, and if it doesn't do well, move it.
Have fun experimenting. I know I will.

I agree about the importance of water, especially to get Hostas established. I have to water when it's cloudy, or early in the morning, but not while the sun is shining intensely at high noon. (Water droplets act like little prisms and can burn holes in the leaves).
