I am president of the Greater Ozarks Hosta Society. We have members in SW Missouri and Northern Arkansas. We take care of the hosta garden at Close Memorial Park, our local botanical garden. Our web page is GOHS.org. How about you? Are you a member anywhere and what does your society do? Do you have a website?

Yeah, I just renewed my membership with the MN Hosta Society.

This will be my 3rd year. What do we do? Every 10 years, we host the national convention and during other times, the society often mans information booths at different events. I believe there are also work days at the MN Arboretum's Hosta Glade.

Joining the AHS does have lots of benefits. You will be invited to join robins where you can communicate with other people that share your interests. You will receive 4 Daylily Journals annually full of information about daylilies. For your membership fee, you will receive a voucher for free daylilies. You will receive your regional newsletters. You will be placed on the AHS Membership list and unless you exclude your information, you will receive catalogs from the various growers, introducing their newest introductions. I personally have never felt inundated with them. And AHS just started delivering a Newsletter via email; very nicely done I might add. Most of the people that run AHS are volunteers, and they work for AHS because of their love for daylilies and the people that love them. Please give them a little more patience than you would someone doing this for pay. I currently belong to a local club which charges a membership fee. The membership fee barely covers the cost of making an annual yearbook and postage costs. If the local club holds a Flower Show, AHS will support the effort but does require that half the Club members be AHS members. I am considering joining a second club and feel the information I get from the meetings and networking with other members to be invaluable. I have also been able to meet most of the noted hybridizers at the Club meetings. So if you're interested in Daylilies, you can't beat doing both! Ed

I love to go to the park although it is a long drive for me. I have watched the Hosta Garden grow from its start. It is a good place to look for favorites. I don't belong to any gardening organizations.

I've had a glancing association with APLD for a number of years. I have never formally joined as I had some real problems with the politics of the local chapter and the former chapter president. And time seems to get in the way. I agree that they can be a fine networking organization and with the infrequent meetings I do attend, I always seem to bring back something of value. As a matter of fact, I've been invited to attend a meeting tonight to dicuss certfication processes. If my cold is better and I feel like driving 45 minutes to get to the meeting location, I just might do it. I do know and respect the current chapter president, so will try to ignore his abrasive predecessor. Unfortunately, her presence in the organization is not an inducement to join or participate.

Circus: We are sill tweaking the floor plan, but here is what we have now. Essentially, we want kitchen/living room to take advantage of rear view. As for the lot/landscaping. There is a gentle left to right slope but the front to rear slope is drastic. We can't do a side load garage due to the lot size (and slope). There won't be any landscaping to speak of other than in the direct front of the house. The house will only sit about 20 ft off of a small lane/street. Lots of windows on back, but not many needed on the front side. I love that house photo from the movie, but need help making it still look cottage-like with a one story. Your bungalow is cool. Love it. Seems hard to keep the cottage look when needing low and wide rather than tall and narrow.

Yes, I'm a member of AHS, Midwest Regional, Dubuque Regional, and Mississippi Valley. Dubuque hosts Hosta Festival in June at the Dubuque Arboretum, and we also maintain the hosta garden there. We meet in member's gardens from April-September, have an annual picnic, holiday party, and bus trip. MVHS has an annual plant sale, maintains the DeeEtta Montgomery hosta garden at Vander Veer park, offers a hosta talk to the community in the fall with a nationally known speaker, and has many interesting meetings. Each club has hosted the Midwest Regional convention as well. More members are always needed at both clubs, so if you're in the area, come join!

I sent in my dues and membership request the first week of January for AHS. I haven't received my welcome letter yet. Can't wait to start reading the journal. I went to the convention in Minneapolis last year- the garden tours were beyond my expectations.

I haven't joined the Minnesota Hosta Society yet. I'll have to check into that.

I'm in the Lower Hudson Valley of NY, where the Tri-State group seems to ignore us (they're mostly Metro NYC area), and the Upstate Group thinks we're Downstaters.

Andy,
all you have to do is drive to their meetings. If you join the Upstate NY Hosta Society you will get 4 newsletters per year which announce all their meetings, even give you a plant list with plants for sale, and driving directions to the meetings. You will certainly be welcome! I joined last year, look forward to a great year.

11 year member of NEHS; about 10 for AHS. Wouldn't think of missing a First Look (Region 1) convention, or the AHS convention, which will be in NE this summer.
Andy- I agree with berndnyz5- be proactive - drive to a meeting and join either or both. You will certainly find people who will befriend you, and also have the opportunity to meet some great gardeners and see some fantastic plants.
Driving hours to meetings is a given for most society members, and the results are worth the effort. Just the newsletters are worth the minimal dues. Go for it!

Chart member of the Mid South Society which is about 12 years old. We have a great club of about 250 members, have great meetings and 8 issues of a very good newsletter. An annual sale at a member's garden the first of May where we sell hostas from 5 or 6 nurseries on consignment and get a perecentage. We have planted and maintain one of the AHS National Display Gardens at our local botanic garden.
Several members go to the Dixie conventions and also the AHS.
Andy...I also urge you to join and get involved...or if it's too far to drive..start a club with some fellow hostaholics. It's a lot of fun
Some of the best folks in the world are hosta nuts!

Michigan Hosta Society, yes, for over a decade.

National, yes a few times over the years, and now as of two years ago, intend to keep it up.

There's a West Michigan group, but it seems it's more of a SW MI group, so not there yet, if ever, as we're NW MI (that's NW LOWER Peninsula, MI is so complex, heheheh).

Is there going to be an actual Hosta Journal anymore? I heard it was all going to be on-line. Same dues, but you
read on line- no actual copy of the magazine.

At this stage, the AHS has only made the 3rd issue per year to be online.
