bringing herbs indoors for winter
Comments (4)I have a bay tree that comes in, in winter. Also, a rosemary, a sage. I killed most of my lavendar, but am hopeful for the one I left out - not saying what kind of winter we're having, cause I'll jinx it!!! lol. I have tried to bring basil in come fall, but I think the shock is just too much here. I love having the sage and the rosemary to cook with all winter, not to mention the bay for soups and stews. Oh, I forgot, I have a garlic chive, but it is not very vigorous, with a thyme plant on the side (same thing). Once I start my basil, I do use the pinched back leaves, in early spring. Now, to the cat urine smell - when my little cat girl was alive, I had to watch large potted plants, cause she'd use them - I had to put rough rocks, tinfoil, whatever, to keep her from 'relieving' herself. lol. I'd rather the basil flowers!! Nancy....See MoreHow do I over-winter my mint?
Comments (16)Your plans sound good--but to clarify, there is a difference between rooting and overwintering cuttings, which have the vigor of a new plant, and trying to overwinter full grown ones that are used to the outdoors. I personally would probably take a few cuttings and just let them sit in some water to root through the winter, changing the water periodically. That way you bring a bit of green indoors, but not whole plants that dry up and drop their leaves. For some reason colored glass (I first noticed this with a green one) seems to work better for rooting....See Moreover-wintering potted herbs
Comments (4)Aha! Fantastic thread! Answered my question as to which plants to bring in...now if I can just keep them alive thru the winter in the dry house...lol Thanks for the help!...See MoreBringing in herbs to grow lights
Comments (3)Basil and cilantro are annuals. Their lives will be short. Parsley is a biennial though I generally treat it like an annual. It will probably be very short-lived indoors as well. Rosemary is a perennial though notoriously hard to over winter indoors. See back posts in this forum for more on that. An unheated porch might be best to over winter rosemary and parsley in.
