lemongrass help with pest problem!! pics

Hi all, I have two lemongrass plants in containers. One is fine. The other has these white kinda flat things on them. 1 - 1.5 millimeters about. Hard to scrape away. I scraped one and it appears that there is a yellow/orange very very tiny larvae/worm kinda thing.

I don't think it is scale, but I tried the stuff I spray on my citrus for scale, which is some water with garlic and lemon soaked in it and fish emulsion added. They wont spray off either. Am I going to have to give it a buzz cut?? PLease help.. Thank you!!

No doubt about it, those are False Oleander Scale. When the scale is dead, it does not wipe off. I started getting this scale last year on my Siberian Iris. Now the scale has found my Star Magnolia. The damage is very noticable.
Someone said that spraying with the yellow mouthwash will kill them. I don't spray them, I use a cotton ball soaked with the yellow mouthwash -- just because I know that even if the wash doesn't kill them, my wiping will.

Horticultural oil is suppose to help. I don't like to use oils when the temperatures are above 75 -- so that rules me out.

Thanks so much. That looks exactly like it. I had zero luck searching.. I'm In South Florida so I guess the oil is not going to work for me too until the "winter" rolls in.
I'll try the mouthwash for sure. THANKS!

I actually cut this lemongrass down last week to about 1 ft. It was just stalks at that point, but it grew another 1 ft of blades since then and should be full again (5-6ft) soon.

I didn't cut my second lemongrass which was not really affected but I'll spot-treat with the mouthwash.

Craig, Posting pictures here is pretty easy. I've posted instructions in this forum many many times, but will do it again in hopes it will help. One of the easiest ways to provide your photo to be embedded into a post is to upload it onto an image hosting site such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc. That should be pretty straight forward, and the individual sites will give instructions on how to get your photos uploaded to their site when you sign up. Once your picture has been uploaded, find its web address by right clicking on the image and copying the image location. Some sites may even provide the address in a text box below the photo for your convenience. Let's say, as an example, that the address of the picture you want to post is http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg To embed the picture into a post, use the command img src="http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg"> For larger pictures, it would be very very very helpful to add a width attribute. Do do so, just add width=600 after the second quotation mark. 600 is a reasonable width for Gardenweb forums and won't mess up the formatting of your post causing people to have to pan around to read the text. So, for larger pictures, the command above could be rewritten as: img src="http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg" width=600> Note that I had to use special characters to get the commands above to show up here without turning into pictures, but you can use them as shown (with the correct image location, of course).

Could be a fungus like Vladimir said, could also be an insect egg or just dirt on a bit of fluff. However, I'm more concerned with how dusty the leaves are. I may just be dust or it could be the beginnings of a spider mite infestation. It's a good idea to wash off the leaves from time to time, like maybe every 4-6 weeks. Take them outside and hose them off, or if that's not possible, put them in the shower and shower them off with cool water. Then let them drain well and put them back where they were. It helps prevent spider mites as they're attracted to dusty plants. And your plants love the rinsing off!

Rhizo I think you are absolutely right about this one. I went down the hill and looked at the condition again and there are a few adult white fies on the tree now. I will start by removing all of the affected leaves ( it is still a small tree ) and go from there. Thank you for the help here to both of you that responded. I hope I never have to post in this section of the forum again...not likely though.

Hey, thanks for this one. I have seven big bunches of lemongrass growing and have never had a problem but will save this in case I ever do. I'll cut them way back the end of Sept. or the beginning of October which I do every year. I dry the leaves and freeze the stalks - cook with the stalks and make tea and broths with the leaves. I've got more than I can eat so my friends get to share.

I know this is an old thread, but I would really like to know what "the yellow mouthwash" is in case I would need it for my lemongrass.

BTW, I bought some lemongrass at a local nursery and it's growing well, but doesn't look like the lemongrass I see at the Asian grocer nearby, so I bought some from them, put several of the shoots into a bucket of water outside in the shade, as it's hotter than you-know-where here and didn't want to boil it and in four days, it's started to grow roots from half of the shoots!!! I couldn't believe it when I took the shoots out of the bucket to give them fresh water. I wonder if it's because I put them in the shade of the fig tree out front? Probably not, but thanks for any information on the "yellow mouthwash".
