Huge job, good going!

You say small roses,are they cutting from your other roses or purchased starts? Not sure what they call those. I know you can order own root roses that are small.

You sure have been busy. Here I thought I was doing good getting all the beds weeded. I'm cleaning out the garden today so I'll have a place to put my extras when I start thinning out some of mine next week. Some of those dips multiply quick.

Don't work to hard. Lot's of fluids for you and the dl's.

The small roses are what they call bands. They are own root baby roses grown from cuttings. I bought these from Heirloom Roses and Vintage Roses. Its just that if you were not ready for it, you would be really surprised at how small theses are. But roses grow fast, at least they do for me here. I am not much interested in taking cuttings as I want roses that I don't already have.

Well, I planted my Olallie Daylilies and also my ones from Jim Murphy and Margo Reed. I also potted up UPON THIS ROCK, which I had received from Phil Korth and potted up my three 2009 intros that I bought from Charmaine Rich. Those potted up ones will go in the snapdragon garden but something will have to be moved out to make a spot for each and I am not ready for that. What I will do is after I have everything thats in the plateau out that I want out and the few remaining re-arranged, then I will be moving things up there.

So basicly, first I dug up the plateau and moved most all the daylilies out and then I will be moving daylilies from other places plus some new things back in. Makes perfect sense to me even though at first it might not sound logical. I wanted to move the they will never rebloom southern evergreens out and put some these should rebloom for me northern daylilies in.

You have more energy than I do, that's for sure! But your garden will be so beautiful next year and you deserve it.

I wanted to point out that on the picture of the daylilies holes dug, they are not nearly as much off from the stringline as they look in the picture. Its the angle it was taken at. I was out looking at the planted daylilies along in there before, and it really looks super. At least to me :-))

Thanks for posting those pictures, I understand now, how you are going about planting on the slope. it looks like little containers all ready for the DL, I remember you said something about laying out the newspaper to get rid of the grass and laying down some sort of edging to hold them in? or was the edging more to prevent soil wash out? That bank is really going to be interesting and beautiful. Great job.

Cindy- The edging is going in a line along the bottom row of daylilies. It is going to be a divider between the daylily section, which will be mulched, and the bottom grass section which will stay as it is. The daylilies need no help to stay were they are, they are in there very solidly and not going anywhere. I figgure as the roots grow more into the hill they will only get more solid.

The bricks I intend have two purposes. One to help hold the hill once the grass is not longer there. Breaks up the rain or anything washing down and slows it down. The second reason is to keep the daylilies properly ID. They are planted closely and should spread. Have you though of the fact that it would be a nightmare to try and dig and divide them in the future?

Remember that I said that the daylilies were so close in the plateau that I could no longer get in there? I didn't dig until after bloom. How do you think I easily ID which fans belonged to which daylilies? It was because each had a brick marker at each side. So the actual row was daylily clump (s) brick, daylily, brick and so on. Want to pick up daylily X? Feel along with the shovel until you hit the brick on each side, lift whats in the middle. The bricks could not be seen as they were actually covered by soil made by the earthworms from broken down mulch (worm castings).

I think the holes look perfect Rita, better than I could have done. I dug five holes today and moved some daylilies, then I had to take my daughter to the doctor. Your garden will look so awesome next year.

My new method of digging the holes all at once and then planting worked better than my old method of doing one daylily at a time like I did on the prior row.

That is a really good idea about the bricks, makes perfect sense. When I was digging in that one bed and 'finding' bricks, it was just an unmistakable feel and sound with the shovel, knew right away it was a brick, so I see where that really works. And yes, i did wonder how you kept the DL fans separated when they were planted so closely. Now I know. Hey, I'm gonna steal your idea. :)

No backaches. Often stiff and sore in the evening (not today) and sometimes still in the morning until all the stiffness walks off.

I orginally thought of the brick spacers idea because I need visual markers when planting or my spacing is all over the place. But once I had laid them out, I realised they would serve nicely to keep my clumps separated.

It really looking good Rita. Your work will really pay off next year.

I took your advice on buying "bands" last year. I bought a couple, then a little later, I bought four more, and then, I bought another four.

They grow unbelievably fast from the little twigs. New Dawn, especially, is an enormous thug!!! In just a little more than a year, it looks like it was bought full sized.

They almost need a warning to "plant and get out of the way".

I like to buy bands because I like to buy roses from Heirloom roses and thats all they sell. I have so many of their Clements Roses now and I just love, love, love them.

Them holes you dug on that slope,looks like a machine dug them.They look like perfect holes.All the same size and spacing all the same.Perfect.Thats going to be soo pretty next year when they are in bloom.Them roses will be pretty, too.You really have some gorgeous roses.
