Carealot: Good luck! Last year I planted three little barely rooted, half dead, scraggly sprigs of mint in three separate one-gallon plastic pots filled with some rather poor potting soil. I placed them on the ground near a bramble of blackberries in an unkempt place in my yard near the woods. I piled some bark chips up around the pots to keep them damp, and watered them just sufficiently to keep them from dying. Near the end of the summer, all three pots were completely full of mint shoots. Toward late fall, the mint had fallen over and rerooted in the pots, in the bark mulch, and trailing all over the damned place. This spring the stuff came up from roots and runners like that damned plant in Little House of Horrors. I have dug up about twenty new shoots and repotted them to give away to unsuspecting, not-too-long-to-be friends. I hope they pass the joke along next year. My original plan was to have just enough mint to make Arabian salad dressing. Now I have enough to choke an Arabian stallion, and it's only May 25!

The previous owner of my house planted it in the ground. It truly does take over. It does make weeding a fragrant chore, though. It spreads both by agressive roots and by reseeding. I'd recommend growing it in a container, but be careful to always cut off the flowers before they go to seed. I have heard of people who limited it to a container and still ended up with it in the garden because of seeds being carried from the container into the garden. Right now my mint has a lot of siberian irises around it. It crawls over them and beds in the tops, but since the irises have roots like concrete it doesn't bother them much. I hope to be able to keep it out of the rest of the garden, but I seriously doubt I'll ever be rid of it. It does smell great, though! I heard once that it was a southern tradition to plant mint near your front door because when company comes the hostess would take a broom and "beat the mint" to create a fragrance as company entered the front door. Heard that on a Georgia gardening show once, and never heard of it again. it's a nice image, though. And, once you plant mint in front of your house there pretty much won't be anything else left to beat!

Gryane, How about this one from Newport Brass? There is a thread on page 1 (what faucet did you get...) that has a picture about 10 posts in of it installed in rococogurl's kitchen next to a KWC systema. Looks great! Mint is very, very easy to root from cuttings and not so easy to grow from seed. Getting cuttings from a friend or neighbor, or as miscel suggests, from a bunch that you buy at the market, is probably the best way to go.
