potting up daylilies?

I received a bunch of daylilies from a very generous daylily garden buddy and promptly potted them up with ferti-lome potting mix and mixed with reg soil. My ? is did I do wrong by soaking the soil? I had them in the sun one day then I moved them today in the shade. Some dont look to great but some others look fine.Should I wait a week before watering again or what should I do? I plan on putting them in the ground when it cools off here but it is staying around 100+ here lately.

In the heat you want to let them dry out,don't water until you see new growth, and keep them in the shade. Hot soil + moisture = crown rot. Some die back is to be expected if they were bareroot.From the outside leaves in. I would be inclined to repot them in dryer potting soil like right from the bag,no added water.

Forgot to tell you to check the crowns for soft spots. If you find any,cut the spot back to firm crown,dust cuts with sulfer,let it dry out for a day or two before repotting,no water till new growth.

If it is extremely sandy you will need to amend any beds that you want to grow flowers in. The sand will not hold moisture or nutrients. I did not add peat to my beds last fall when I first started gardening in the sand. It was a HUGE mistake. I added a good deal of something called "eggshell compost" and then this spring I added my own compost that I had made last fall. It has not helped with moisture retention. I will redo all my beds this fall, adding peatmoss as well as some heavier soil. I am also planning on making a series of raised circular beds where nothing seems to grow. A soil test will also help to show what your ph is as well as your nitrogen, etc. Our county extension office offers this for free. Once amended the sand plus peat, compost should make a very good growing medium but will require some work. You might have a sandy loam though already. Check out your neighbors gardens and talk to them about what they have done. If you have sandy loam you do not really need to do much I don't think. I have almost complete sand in most places. If you don't have access to a good water supply do yourself a favor and add the peat moss to your garden beds, it has no nutritional value but does not disappear into the sand like compost does since it decomposes very slowly. Brad, I'm not an expert, but if they are blooming well, I would leave them alone. Some daylilies just don't multiply as fast as others. If they aren't blooming very well, you might move them or dig them up & add some compost to the soil Most daylilies don't bloom well in shade, and trees can sap nutrients from the soil too. You need to replant the daylilies, unless you plan to pot them up til spring. I don't do well potting up daylilies, I think I tend to overwater, but I know lots of people on this forum do quite successfully.

Jill I have aprox a few hundred in pots and thay love water. I have also raised some in a water solution for a few months to see if it would work and it does as long as you keep the crowns above water if you water the plants water in the evening as it will refresh them for the next day of heat.Good Luck Dick

Dick is right.The crown is the important part.I have no 100+ temps here in zone 4,a heat wave for me is 3 or 4 days over 90.Just try to keep the crown on the dry side.

I thought crown rot was just root rot that progressed all the way to the crown. Is this wrong? I suppose is this G-awful heat anything can start rotting at any time, but I mean in general.

I probably would not have mixed the potting mix with the soil, but since you have already done it, unless the pots are not draining well, I wouldn't mess with them. The point is to keep the plants out of the hot sun and don't over-water. If the plants were bare-root, trim the foliage back to no more than about 6 inches height. It will most likely die any way, and it reduces the demand for water from the roots because of transpiration. New growth will come from the middle of the fans.
Give them some morning sunlight in a shady place where they won't over-heat and keep them moist, but not wet.

I have not had time to go get some more soil so I put a fan outside on my carport with the daylilies thinking that might help them some from getting crown rot, it might be a dumb idea but it seems I am getting some new growth on them since I potted them up or I just might be having a heat stroke with 100 + temps here 8 days in a row it reach 103 today. Has anyone else ever tried this?
