Dying Daylily (Disease?) Seeking your help

Hi,

My clump of Kwanza Gold has most of its fans with yellowed leaves from the outside in--in the worst cases almost all of the leaves have died. In one of the fans, I see what looks like chewed out areas on the interior of the innermost foliage. I'm not sure if the two are related, but I cannot believe this for the plant was exceptionally healthy throughout the summer.

We had massive rainfall last weekend: over five inches. However, the area drains well. Still, could too much water be the culprit? Most other fans have the yellowing leaves but none to this extent. Could this be a fungus possibly caused by too much moisture? A pest?

Any help you can offer me would be appreciated because right now it looks as if I am going to lose this plant.

Tug on one leaf loose and see if it is normal looking or slimy and smells bad. If it is slimy, it is probably a crown rot . Take and dig up the entire clump, Cut off all diseased or slimy flesh Keep cutting till normal crown flesh appears. Then take the plant and soak in a bleach water bath for several hours. . Then remove and let it dry . Pot it up and set in a shady place to recover. Then take the bleach water and pour it in the area where the plant was planted. Let the spot stay vacant for a few weeks to let solar take care of it.

It doesn't appear slimy, just lost its color. I am not sure if I should dig it up and get it away from other plants or not. One of the fans looks green and ok; the others are just devastated. Could it be crown rot without being slimy?

Any links to daylily disease sites?

I agree with Roseseek. THE PILGRIM is anything but thornless. If you want a yellow climbing rose with fewer thorns then try its parent GRAHAM THOMAS. REINE DES VIOLETTES is about as thornless as it gets for a rose. Truthfully I've never noticed any thorns on my plant. Both flowers and foliage are fragrant, which is an added bonus. The growth habit is graceful and mannerly so you won't have to worry about it growing out of bounds. Its one fault is a tendency for Chlorosis (caused by a nutrient deficiency). This cultivar is more susceptible to it than any other rose that I've grown so keep an eye out for yellowed leaves. Solutions include getting a grafted plant on Dr. Huey rootstock or amending your soil. Get your soil tested: pH should be neutral (6.5-7) with plenty of iron for the roots to feed on. Drainage should also be optimal so if you have red clay add some peat moss to fluff it up. I know this sounds like a lot but RdV is one of those roses who is worth the extra effort. A well grown plant in full bloom will stop traffic. CLOTILDE SOUPERT is a gorgeous climbing polyantha that does very well in USDA Zone 6. It has hardly any thorns and flowers are intensely fragrant. It is prone to balling and powdery mildew, which is really only ever a problem in places like California. With enough summer heat the flowers open just fine in spite of the humidity. I haven't grown very many on your list, but I will add one comment regarding one that I have grown. At least in my garden, All Fired Up was not "apricot and salmon" as per your note. It was a great performer, but definately orange rather than apricot and the eye and edge were red rather than salmon! Here's a picture from my yard even though it isn't as vivid as the flower itself: You may want to look up several different pictures of each one to get an idea of the range of what it might look like. Different growning conditions can affect the overall color. All Fired Up did pretty well in the Georgia heat. It is the darker colors (burgundy, red, dark orange, purple, etc.) that are most affected by the heat. You will have to keep the roots system moist to keep your daylilies happy if your temperatures are in the nineties like they are here, so use lots of mulch to help. I think it might be spider mites too. They are common on junipers (and many other plants too). Hold a sheet of white paper directly underneath the plant and tap on a branch. If you have spider mites, you should see little tiny dots (the mites) on the paper and, if you look carefully, you'll see the mites are crawling around on the paper. If you have spider mites, they can be VERY hard to control. I usually start with a sharp spray of water (use a nozzle that concentrates the water under pressure if you have one) on the UNDERSIDE of the leaves, because that is where they stay. You can knock off a lot of them that way. After that, there are a couple of things you can do. One thing you can do is to mist the plant...top and underneath every day. Why? Spider mites thrive in dry, dusty conditions so the moistness can scare them off. You also could spray the plant (on top and underneath) with liquid seaweed diluted per the label directions. You might try spraying it with neem oil diluted as directed. You also could go the chemical route (although I never found it effective when I tried it) and use whatever the current approved miticide is. Read the label carefully BEFORE you buy it and make sure it is approved for junipers. (It might not be.) Kelthane used to be the standard miticide but there may be something newer and better. Thanks all for the nutrients, I gave it Burpees new organic plant granular food, they. it says feed up to 3 months, I know thats bull lol don't know why I bought it when I used miracle grow water solubale for past 4 years with no problem. I am gona do that every 7-10 days now. But prior to the first feeding, the lady recomended I waited a few weeks for that granular stuff. After I did it didnt see results as much as I did with the MG so I used last years supply and stupidly right before it rained hard for a few days. Gona stick with it. Prior to this my mother nd I wwater them once a day when really hot then every other day or so. Also I remember reading about Fungicide and just ordered last night it. It should be arriving today, got to love thath amazon shipping. Gona take all advice and stripp leaves and all. Thanks again all

Mike, the slimy part would be at the crown level and not on the leaves. I have had a plant do extremely well and then all the sudden decline. I believe it was because the place I planted it got too much water. Even though the soil drained, I think it was just too much.

If you have a picture, it might be more helpful for those here to try and help you.

I find that when I am having trouble with a plant, and seriously afraid of losing it, the only option is to dig it up. I feel like, for me, whatever I was doing currently was obviously not working for the plant, and if I DON'T dig it, it will definately die. If you feel like that, then dig it.

But carefully. Try not to dig into the roots - dig WAY around them, you can always shake/wash off the dirt. Make sure you get all the dirt off, so you can really see what is going on. If you have rot, you'll know when you stick your finger in the crown area and it is all smelly and soft. Gross. If this is the case, you need to cut away the soft parts until you only have firm crown area left - this was hard for me, I felt like I was killing the thing, but you have to. Then I dust the crown with gardening sulfur dust (available at nurseries). Pot it up with loose potting soil (I prefer the stuff with vermiculite and perilite, very loose). Water once, place in the shade and wait. Don't water again until you see new growth on the plant - an indication that it is recovering.

If it is not rot, then we'll definately need a photo. Hope this helps some??

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate your advice. From the way the leaves are just colorless and limp I'm afraid it must be rot. I'll dig it. Now I'm afraid of the soil it's in. It has other daylilies around it.

I'll make a photo when I get home today.
