Where do you keep your thermostat set?

In the winter that is... I'm in the new house and I set it at 62 when the weather started getting colder. Got my first 'real winter' natural gas bill the other day and immediately lowered it to 60. Right now, I have a sweater and fuzzy slippers on along with my jeans and t-shirt and I'm about ready to go get a blanket :-( On the other hand, when my friend was over and we baked cookies all evening yesterday, it was toasty warm in here!

64* here, windy old farm house:( , hoody & fuzzy socks too! Natural gas , heating oil & even wood is very expensive unless you cut it up your self anymore. Every winter we talk about windmills & solar panels when we get the first oil & gas bills YIKES!! Now wheres my nose muff....

I would have dearly loved to put in a central vac system when we did the original buy/gut/remodel. But alas, we ran out of money and in the interim two decades there are so many other things that take precedence - like a new roof, painting the house, replacing dead appliances, updating the kitchen and bathrooms, solar panel install, and the latest, a master bedrm remodel (which is a full one-quarter of our modest 2bd cottage). But when I did the original redesigned layout for this house 25 yrs ago, I put in every bit of storage I could - both built-in and freestanding. But of course, it's never enough [smile]. Like many here I was frustrated having to lug the vacuum up and down stairs (it's heavy!) and didn't really have any place convenient for it. I recently bought the Hoover Windtunnel Cordless and am in love with it. We no longer have pets and so this battery-powered vacuum works great for a quick, easy cleaning on both our HW floors and Oriental rugs. About 3 yrs ago we had a carpenter install a double custom cabinet on our small back porch, and specified one-third of it to comfortably fit any full-size upright or cannister. It's downstairs and will be used for the vacuum for the MBR suite. There are hooks for hoses. Bags/filters go in the cabinet next to it, which has floor to ceiling 10" deep shelves for all my extra cleaning supplies, water filters, boxes of garbage bags, DW detergent and rinse aid, etc. A Swiffer mop and hand duster, plus refills, also fit into this double closet. On the main floor we have 4 small and one large closet. The large closet and one small closet are extra deep. The upstairs vacuum, which will probably be a Sanitaire, will go in the large closet in the front/spare bedroom, which is convenient to all the rooms since each floor is only 860 sq. ft. total. We recently reorganized most of our closets and there's plenty of room for it and all the attachments. The small extra deep closet now holds extra kitchen pantry items (non-food), like the 24 rolls of paper towel refills and the stack of brown paper grocery bags we use for recycling compostables. I have a small cordless hand vacuum from Black & Decker that I've been very happy with. Surprising amount of suction and so much less fuss than a corded hand vacuum. I just tried one of the lower-end Shark electric brooms and it's useless. The B&D actually has more suction and is less trouble to use, which surprised me. I need a wall holder for the B&D, though. Haven't hit the stores yet to find one. In a pinch I can hide it in a wastebasket, LOL. Despite the modest size of the house, because we originally had to do foundation work, we were able to add a substantial laundry/utility room next to the one-car inner garage. I was not able to fit in a laundry sink, but there is a full 12x18 room just for storage, separate from the furnace/WH/W&D. We fitted it up with steel storage units, both closed and open. Luggage, wine, canned/dry food, extra linens and rugs, paint/hardware supplies, boxes of books - pretty much anything that needs a home except for garden stuff - can all fit in here. The ShopVac, for instance, is here, along with free-standing closet rods for when my DH does the laundry (what a sweetie!) There's also a storage shed on the property, which is one of my future projects! We moved a bunch of older storage organizers out there, so it's functional but not very attractive. It's about the same size as the indoor utility room, 12x18. Even though the size of the house is modest, the storage capacity is exceptional (we also have an attic we added for even more storage, but it requires a ladder for access). It just took us a while to gather the $$$ to finish it off the way we wanted.

I love the picture too. Lovely colors and great woodwork. However, I think that putting the firewood into the window seat built like it is, would end up beating it up, and having to make your wood really more uniform that the wood we get for our woodburning fireplace. They do make window seats which have the FRONT open. And I think that way, you can always poke the firewood inside it easily, even if it is not a uniform size. Plus, you can suck up the bark and any loose dirt much more easily with the vacuum wand. Your seat cushion could remain on top and stay in better shape too, I'd suspect. Some folks might consider using an old trunk, especially a tall metal trunk, perhaps a domed lid. I'd really love to have a copper container for the wood, but I bet it is expensive. And I've been very suspicious of the ticks, because the deer ticks ARE a problem up in Massachusetts, and I'm deathly afraid of catching Lyme disease, since my dear little maltese boy already had it. But down here, where we have to deal with fire ants a lot (I think they reportedly came into the country here in Mobile), I don't have a wood burning fireplace. I've seen the wide beadboard like that shown in the photo. But also, they could have used some of the wood flooring that has a sort of bevelled edge, just run it up the wall. That bevel creates a darker shadow seam, unless they antique glaze the paint job. We have narrow strip beadboard wainscoting in both of our Mobile baths. In the master, just one wall of the wainscoting, the rest of the room is full height beadboard, with the tub bumpout having a sloping roof out of beadboard also. The master closet is totally beadboard, except for the original wall (formerly the exterior wall), which we left as original stucco. Every inch of closet depth helps.

I have a covered garbage pail under the sink for garbage bin garbage, and take it out and kick it around the kitchen when it's needed (pretty much like you said). I have a trash pullout with one bin for deposits (bottles and cans) and one for the bin (jars, paper and plastic). Plant matter compostables go in reused produce bags to be taken down to the city green bin. We don't have garbage composting. I don't refrigerate my house (A/C if on at all is set very high), and don't even like putting meat waste and really yucky things in the city mixed garbage bin, which gets a lot of afternoon sun. Phew! Though I'd do it if it were going for composting. That would be my big concern in the kitchen though: The bins are outside and downstairs and the veg waste is bad enough at times if no one wants to carry it down. What I'd want for it is well covered, probably with one of those charcoal filters or something, if it couldn't be carried right out immediately. I keep thinking of maggots. It just takes a single fly... I actually think if you have nothing else that you want to put under the sink, if you don't have plumbing in the way (inspector forced it under mine), you might fit all four bins but they might be small. And you certainly could do garbage and city compost with covers, and the rest next to it. I have recycling bins in every room so that it doesn't all accumulate in the kitchen. Considering how your city is diverting so much from waste water processing into high heat compost, I wonder if the house of the future will have a garbage room. Maybe it'll even have a built in composter appliance, so that all the city would pick up would be recycling (plastics, glass, metal) and home processed compost for a final run through to purify it in the city plant. Hm... Goopy plastic wrappers. That future needs a compostable wrapper that works as well as ordinary plastic for preserving freshness so as not to waste water. They've made great strides with cornstarch. My experience? I have had my pail (Rubbermaid) since I moved into off campus housing decades ago. It's a great pail which holds a week's garbage, because there's just so little garbage nowadays. There would be a lot less without paper napkins and towels. The other bins are standard size and could be twice as big. If your pick-up bins are right out the door, it doesn't matter, but if you don't like emptying them twice a day, or whatever, go for the biggest bins you can fit, especially for stuff that doesn't stink.

I'd freeze.
I would be praying for hot flashes.
Has to be on 72 degrees during the day and no lower. Heating bills are not bad at all. At night I like it cooler sometimes it's at 68 but no lower and thats only at night!

Only about 65-68 here. We have central air & heat pump,as well as electric heat strips,if we need them,but we only heat with a propane gas log fireplace which has a fan. At night we have heated bed mattress cover,if it gets too cold. Usually,we really don't get that cold until January,when it sometimes gets to single digit outside temps,but not even below zero. Sorry about that frozen tundra residents!lol! Phil

The older you get the colder you get!!!! As with everything else,we are paying more the last 2 years for our natural gas.

We do 68 degrees and try not to change it. I am here all the time and when I feel a chill the sweater and booties go on. Our fanily room downstairs is about 3 or 4 degrees cooler so we have an old wicker basket full of throws for us and guests to wrap up in. No TV in the livingroom for us for over 30 years so it's either down there, the kitchen, the computer room, or the bedroom if you want to watch it.

I used to turn it down to 62-64 over nite. I would raise it to 68+ during the hours I was home. However, five years ago I was in a crosswalk and someone talking on a cell phone while driving hit me and 3 other people. I had 19 fractures on my right side. It cause some injury induced arthritis and now I go with whatever temp feels good. For some reason if its too cold the right hip hurts and I cannot sleep.

I set the thermostat to be 72 when I home, and 61 at night or when I'm not home. Gas heat.

To keep toasty warm, I prefer the new down blankets over the old style down comforters. They are so lightweight, its amazing how they hold in the heat.

Our thermostat is at 68-70 during most cold days and 62 at night after 10:00 p.m.--gas heat!

bluepoppy--can you tell me more about your down blanket? How does it differ and is it the
only blanket you use on your bed? Is yours washable?

Hi Jan,
I can tell you about our down comforter.
We have almost a 2" thick one. It is stitched in squares and filled with mostly all down. The sides are not stitched down but have a piece of material stitched so the loft is raised. And I believe it is double stitched. None of the feathers have ever gotten out. Well worth the investment.

We have had it for 10 years. I do wash it in the spring then let it sun dry outside. We have a duvet on it so it's easy to keep the surface clean.

As for warmth there is nothing like it!
And we sometimes use it in the summer with the air on and it's not to warm. I think it breaths so it can be used in all seasons.

Don't buy a cheap one it's an investment that will reward you for a long time. And many can be found on sale w/coupon in January. Duvets can be made or purchased. Target has them at a resonable cost.

Besides a sheet it's the only blanket we use!

I got mine from qvc - item H97172. 600 fill power down.

I agree with hostared, it's an investment, but well worth it! machine washable/dryable.

Hi Gang,

We have our thermastat set to automatically go up to 68 degrees about 6 a.m. and go down to 60 at 8p and 50 at 9 p.m. Really helps on the heating bill too! (Gas Heat/Forced Air)

You would think we'd freeze but get too warm and can't sleep if set any higher. We even like the ceiling fan on. I think it has something to do with being older...the whole menopause thing. We use 1 vellux blanket and a comforter...but half the time I end up throwing the comforter off for a while. One of my cats might be cold though as she asks to come under the blankets several times a night!
