North Country Daylilies, again!

Well, I couldn't resist going back just one more time. Melanie had her end of the season sale this past weekend and who can resist daylilies half off???

It was a perfect day - not too hot with a nice breeze. Too many gnats with all the rain we've had this summer but really a minor nuisance. The dogs were out in force - 4 of them, all as friendly and playful as puppies!

I ended up with 7 new daylilies: Indian Giver, Sweet Revenge (a clump of at least 10 fans!), Look Yonder, Ruby Spice, Siloam Double Fringe, Tiny Trumpets and Rosa Roma. All for less than $45! My favorite of the bunch is Ruby Spice - it looks very much like Fire and Fog only with deeper coloring.

One DL she had that was not yet for sale was called Ocean Spirit, a 2006 Murphy intro - gorgeous! I am not normally a fan of spiders but this one was stunning. It was a cream/lavender blend with a very dark purple chevron eye, at least 5 feet tall and loaded with buds. The pics I've seen online don't do it justice!

That's the truth! I waffled over several others but was trying not to spend too much money. The one that I agonized over most was Armenian Haberdashery (hope I spelled that right!) - it's a bright magenta with an orange throat. Sounds awful but it's incredibly striking in person. It was $20, though, and I just couldn't afford it.

I moved four daylilies today and still have more to do. I had to remove the last row of the three rows in put in that big planterbox bed I have in my front yard. I put two rows of daylilies along the front and one in back That was last spring. By fall I could see that the row along the back wasn't going to work out. Made it too narrow for walking up there and they were only first year plants. So I moved half the row last fall then ran out of time. So I figgured I would move the rest this spring. Besides last fall I had no idea were I could actually move them too! I am planning on putting some annuals in there for summer long color. Also in the fall I plan to plant bulbs in there, daffodils and tulips. I got a later start on the daylily project as I was cleaning out all my ponds first. I put the filter and pump in the big stocktank pond and stated running that. The water was the dirtiest I have ever had it but I just scooped all the leaves and junk that fell in overwinter as best I could and started the pump and filter. I had bought a new filter the other day so I could do this. Tomorrow I will change the filter again as it should have sucked up much of the mess by then. I do so love that biggest pond I put in afew falls ago. Another one of my projects but it's one of my favorites. I also planted afew lily bulbs and an going out now to plant some more.

Kay, you have definately put in more new beds or enlarged beds both this fall and spring than I have. It must seem like I had done so much because I am the Queen of moving things around. Which is what I was doing last year. I do have that one section that used to be veggie garden which is my major project this spring. It is going to be daylilies, lilies, TB Iris, Siberian Iris and lots of spring bulbs. I have Joe Pie Weeds here for years. I love them because they grow so tall. In the summer when they flower they are so big people think they are shrubs, not perennials. I do love High Country Gardens as they have plants that one can't find anywhere else.

I have been buying from Melanie and North Country daylilies for years. Only instead of her plants she grows for resale, I always buy either her own intros or those of Bryan Culver which she sells. Great plants that are great doers in the garden. Plus great quality and very generous as you said and showed. I love North Country daylilies. Your plants look fabulous. I am sure they will take off right away and grow like well for you. No wimps allowed in Melanies Garden :-))

Thanks for everyone jumping in on this. I know I could get some jobs in other parts of the country, but for now it feels good to know that we are in a place we feel we should be. Francy, never say never, Mimi and I would love to get a chance to go to Cali. . . Most times that we have gone elsewhere it was because people had frequent flyer miles that they were able to cash in. It really helped keep the costs down to a minimum. I'd be willing to take a shot at making the fissure/crack disappear as well. . .that would be pretty hard to do though. . .lol You would have to prepare some things a few weeks in advance in that area for it to work though. If anyone would like to entertain the thought of refinishing, again, let us know.

I took a look at AH at Tinker's. My Brave World has these colors also, and like you, it seems an odd mix of color, but I really like Brave World, and it has the 'WOW' factor.

I have DLs from North Country and they do well here in PA.

I am jealous that you got to see Melanie's farm. She will be speaking at the Nova Scotia Daylily Society this Saturday. It is a full day thing with a Garden Judge One course, barbeque meet and great, talk, and auction. I have three of Melanie's daylilies and they do excellent in Nova Scotia. It is tough to choose but I think my favorite is Mary Ruffin.

Sweet Revenge is gorgeous! Right up my alley. If you like that one you'll like Rainbow Radiance. Sorry no pic, I just ordered it.

Melanie is a fun person, Ed - I hope you get a chance to hang out and talk with her.

Thanks for posting the pic, Jane. I love the soft blending of colors on that one. I'll look for My Brave World and Rainbow Radiance (thank, NJ!).
