How late can you plant in Southern Ohio

I would like to move some plants, but am concern about how late in the season it is. I'm still waiting for seed pods to come off before moving. Can anyone let me know how late I can move a plant and still be okay for winter. Live in Dayton OH area. Thanks

Hi, I was waiting to see if anyone else wanted to chime in here first, but since no one has, here is my opinion and please note that I live in Western PA about 12 miles north of Pittsburgh. I have planted DL's here as late as mid October. I don't really recommend that you plant this late, just stating that I have done it and the plants survived. I also mulched them with 4 to 5 inches of shredded bark after several hard freezes (temps dipped into the mid 30s). I try for the most part to have things planted no later than mid to late September, and this applies only if I can't avoid having to plant in the fall. Otherwise I strongly recommend planting in the Spring which gives the plants the entire Summer to establish themselves, and then they have a much better chance of surviving the winter IMO.

I'm not sure what hardiness zone Dayton is, but I'm guessing 5a or 5b.

I'm a 5a zone, and I've been told to get perennials in the ground 6 weeks before the ground freezes. That's not always a great help, since we can have a mild or harsh Fall season. Sometimes the ground freezes here around Thanksgiving (late Nov.) but other times during a mild season, the ground won't freeze until Christmas!

So, what I try and do is get every perennial transplanted no later than late Sept. just as Linda said above. I have never tried to transplant a DL with ripening seeds pods though. Hopefully yours will all ripen by the end of late Sept.

Kerry, You can plant in October, November, or December with no problems here in Kentucky. If you plant too early, though, they tend to sprout rather high before going through their cold dormancy period. I've pretty much settled on Thanksgiving for planting, which seems to create a good balance. As to varieties, virtually any will grow. My experience has been that softnecks do better than hardnecks, however. But I still grow hardnecks, because as a class they taste better.

How late can you plant perennials in Zone 8?

Faye, I would think in zone 8 you could wait as late as November to plant your perenials. You want to give them at least 30 days to establish themselves before you get a frost. I'm no expert however, so I really suggest you call your local extension service. I used to wish my DH loved to garden also, but now I'm kinda glad he doesn't. I get to do it all my way :-). He does help me when I ask him to, I just have to be sure I really need his help, lol.

I always (every year!) say that I will plant in late April or early May, but always plant the day after school is out - mid to late June. The vines sometimes get a bit crispy (which could also be related to my inconsistent watering) but I have never had a big enough disappointment to discourage this behavior! I'm in Oly too.

I found this on Piviones Riviere's website. WHAT IS THE BEST PERIOD TO PLANT ? How do you plant a peony? I'm in zone 6 and the latest I would recommend is September. October would really be pushing it.

We're zone 6b here they say and have successfully moved plants to late Sept. If your not dividing them you should have no problems. Make sure you take the rootball with as much dirt as possible and the plants won't even know you moved them. We water them well 24hrs. before moving them, so the dirt doesn't fall away.

Bareroot planting we try our best to have them in the ground by mid Sept as posted above. Never lost one yet through the winter and we don't mulch much either.
