What Do You Use For Markers?

what does everybody use to tag or mark their plants? We had a herd of our llamas end up in my iris/daylily bed and they carefully removed the tags veryyy delicately, I would have to say. I did have good photos so I can put them all back after the tag picking contest was over. But i was just thinking what does everyone else use for tags, markers, and writing pens? I have put large rocks in the rows to divide the different varieties, this works real nice seeing where one variety stops and another one start in the same row. Thanks

I use Paw Paw Everlast Label Co. metal plant markers. I use the miniature ones because I don't like the look of plant markers everywhere, but they last better than plastic and I use a paint pen to write the names of the plants on them. Paint lasts much longer than marker, which fades and washes away. Others use label makers to put the names on their markers, but I'm too cheap to get one. lol!

Karen, could you describe the paint pen? Where do you get it? Is it really weather proof - like, for years? DOes it write with a thick line or fine line? Thank you.

The best way to make a marker with the mini blinds is to use Aluminum Foil Tape available in the plumbing section of your hardware store. A large roll goes for about five dollars and will make hundreds of markers. The tape is similar to your kitchen tin wrap. It has a very good adhesive backing that sticks wonderfully to the mini blinds. Just cut off a piece and stick it to your blind. You can write on it with anything, it doesn't matter. When you write on it, it simply makes an indent in the foil. Never fades, never smudges. I can reuse all of my markers that were out all winter, the moisture doesn't affect the sticky backing!

I buy cheap vinyl blinds at BIG LOTS. The 36" seem to be the best value. Then I cut them into 7+ inch lengths. I use a black china marker to write names on topside. It is nice and black and stays for about 5 years. I use a soft lead artist pencil to write name on bottom. It will last as long as the marker, just not as visible. Some bury a small plastic tag below ground level in front of clump. I don't but I think it's a good idea. Maps are good too, just lots of up-keep. Ed

My youngest son did some "art" on one of my end tables that was solid wood. I used WD40. If it didn't hurt the wood, I don't know why it would harm a fridge. Or, look in the automotive department at Wal Mart and get GUNK for engines. That will remove most anything.

mamasllamas.......you made me chuckle the way you described the way the llamas took out your markers. Thanks for the laugh, as it has been a serious type of day! I use the galvanized markers and then use a P-Touch label maker with the TZ tape to put on them. I can gets lots more info on each label and they are weatherproof and do not fade. I grew up on a farm/ranch, although I have never had or been areound llamas, so I know what can happen when the herd gets out and gets into mischief, whether it was horses, calves or pigs.
