Oh, I love old-fashioned Phlox. I have it everywhere on my place. The fragrance fills the air on hot summer days. The color is intense and lights up the gardens. Run a water hose on low to deep-soak their roots. Do not spray them or water them with a sprinkler, especially if you live in humid climate. Do not get water on the leaves. If your plants get mildew, cut them back and burn them in the fall. Plant them where they get plenty of air circulation...not up against a building or solid fence as this increases the possibility of them getting powdery mildew and other diseases they are prone to get. Allow room behind them if you plant them near your house or a fence. Edna, they are really easy to grow. Require little or no care as long as you water them the right way. Grow in full sun (best) and in part shade. Too much shade and they don't bloom as well. They spread like all perennials - increasing their root base and if the conditions are just right, they will increase by seed, although their seeds are not viable enough to be considered an invasive plant. Divide them and share. Look great next to bright orange flowers, like Tiger Lilies or Trumpet vine blooms. I didn't mean to hijack your topic, Glenda. Val - Anastasia doesn't have a lot of buds for me, probably because it doesn't get full sun. But it has always rebloomed even with only 5 hours of sun a day. Celeste - Sweet Sugar Candy is that true of a pink for me. When I first got it, it looked peachy. But after a couple of years it settled in, and it was more true pink. It seems to be the pinkest when the temperatures are in the 90s. I doubt that you get into the 90s much where you live. It's supposed to have a great bud count too when planted in full sun. Mine is in part shade because the neigbors planted some very big shrubs and trees next to my daylily border, so I have only 12-14 buds. Debra

Nancy- Thank you! What a nice compliment. You know I always am working on my garden but I am actually done with all the big parts. All my garden beds are created and I moved so many of my daylilies two years ago to create that slope garden and redo the plateau. I even moved daylilies this spring, mostly moving an entire row forward to get away from shrubs that grew larger. The things left to do are minor compaired to what has come before. I plan to add more spring bulbs this fall and I am sure I will keep adding lilies and bulbs in future years. Even my rose beds are complete. The daylilies I will probably chuck out afew but basicly things are not planned to change.

I also keep checking back to this thread. I figure ... If I can't grow some things, at least I can admire them in your gardens. Indian Pipe.... wow! Thanks, Steve. I haven't seen that in a long time but used to find it growing in the woods in front of my old house. Your lilies are opening and the yellow one looks like one of mine, which are all done for this year. (I just cut back all their seed pods.) Yes, I miss their scent which even reached up onto the back deck. And I also enjoy seeing so many of the things I've lost over the years. Kind of the Ghost of Gardens Past thread, for me. Susan, your Stokesia is gorgeous.... that's one plant that I miss. I tried two of them and then gave up. The Veronicastrum that nekobus grows... loved those white spears. That's one of the reasons why I planted H. 'Light the Way', which is still showing well in our yard. White kind of sparkles in the garden, I think. Of course, the David Austin roses and especially the Lace Cap hydrangeas. Well, in all honesty, I haven't grown the Lace Caps because there just isn't any room in our small yard. I miss my Monarda, but it took up too much space. And the space that some of you have! That I admire. Sped your contrasts of orange/blues and purples just stand out against all of those green fields.
