Saturday Tour Garden Number One

The first garden visited today was the Buck Bucklin Garden in East Hampton, Long Island, NY.

Driving up to the Bucklin Garden. As you can see, the daylies are in the back yard and the front is a typical Hamptons cottage.

Even though I arrived there at 10:30 (the advertised open start time) lots of club members were already there touring the garden.

ALL FIRED UP looked fabulous at the Bucklin Garden.

All Fired UP is a wonderful daylily! It had to be a wonderful day to visit this beautiful garden.

Yes, they are stakes. A bunch of us noticed that many of the spiders he had were staked. Then when we would look at the width of those scapes, it was obvious that they were thin compaired to most others in his garden. I don't know why and I did not make note of which ones they were, only that they all seemed to be Spiders that were staked.

Jean- They don't sell at these at all, some of these people hybridize but these are private gardens, not sales gardens. Last weekend I went to Carolyn Youngs and that was an open garden, meaning they advertised it and come one, come all. They even had news channel 12 there which is our local Long Island news channel. These are the kinds of things that would be announced (and in this case were announced) in the community events section of the newspaper if you notify them. These gardens this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday are only for members of the Long Island Daylily Society and called Members Only Tour Gardens. I am sure if a member brought a friend with them who is not a club member, no one would kick you out but the event is ment for club members to show off their daylilies to other club members. They are set up in a certain order, in other words garden one from a certain time in the morning, two mid day and three in the afternoon. You go to them in order and would not show up at the afternoons garden three first thing in the morning and vice versa. Open gardens are usually all day or most of the day like from 10 to 4 and you get there whenever is convenient for you as they are expecting vistors in the garden all day for the posted hours. There are more open gardens next weekend so I should be going to more daylily viewings. These were announced by flyers sent out to club members but I don't know what else they did to get people to come.

Rita, what a doll you are to go to all this trouble! I'm so weary after touring that it takes me weeks to get pictures up! Thanks for sharing Long Island with us. These pictures are so fun and help us see what you saw. Wow!

I know that I very much enjoy when others have posted here pictures of open gardens and tour gardens they have visted so I figgured that many of you might want to see the gardens that I had the chance to see. Many, like this garden number one and garden number three were what I would call normal sized yards so its not necessary to have an overabundance of room to get a lovely and interesting garden.

Lrae- I did not dream about daylilies or anything else. I just konked out as soon as my head hit the pillow I was so poofed from all my adventures yesterday.

How do people manage huge, thickly planted collections like these? Digging and dividing must be a monumental chore! Seriously - I am wondering!

I loved seeing all three garden tours you went on. I thinking it is so much fun to see other peoples gardens, to see how and what they've done.

I love the Hosta bed and am so glad you post it too.

There is probably more space between them than shows on these pictures. I actually think there was much more space between these daylilies than there were in the ones in the display beds in Saturday Tour Garden Number Two.
