Saturday Tour Garden Number Two

The second garden visited today was Bob and Mimi Schwartz Garden in East Hampton, Long Island, NY.

Everybody went in this way which is actually the seedling beds futher away from the house. You might notice the big gate and the 8 foot fence. The whole property is totally fenced, including access to the driveway at the house to keep out the hordes of hungry deer. Since Bob and Mimi both are local well known hybridizers the seedling area was just huge!

Then as we go around to the side and back of the house its just one long curved daylily bed border that I took many pictures of the various sections. This area was so beautiful, serene and peaceful that I have no words to describe it. I loved this back area and could have stayed there all day. Now this is a daylily garden the way I wish I could do a daylily garden.

This woodland setting is soooooo beautiful! It takes years to get to this stage but once you get there it is a wonder to behold. So beautiful, seems not to be enough to say. Your pictures are beautiful, too. I bet you had a great day and I haven't gotten to #3 yet! After that drive you had to be tired by now.

I am poofed. Sitting here by the computer now eating cookies and then I am going to bed. Have to rest up to do Sundays tour gardens!!

This weekend on Saturday June 9th, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the non-profit service group Soroptimist will be putting on our annual Garden Tour. Oh WOW! That soft yellow one that you got at the daylily show is gorgeous. Where could I find that one or is it just a local one and not readily available? It is so very lovely. Yes, they are stakes. A bunch of us noticed that many of the spiders he had were staked. Then when we would look at the width of those scapes, it was obvious that they were thin compaired to most others in his garden. I don't know why and I did not make note of which ones they were, only that they all seemed to be Spiders that were staked.

I think this is my favorite of all your tours. Simply amazing what they have done with what looks like a small lot. The constant flow of color and texture is what grabs my attention. Daylilies with Hosta? I would have never guessed it would work but it looks fantastic! I have one little spot that gets sun in my shade garden and it has a dl in it but it is several feet away from the hosta...will have to see if I might sneak in another daylily. Thanks so much for sharing your pictures.

Now THAT is what I expected to be visiting today.... thank you for posting these photos after your exhausting trip... it's a long drive aint it? But man... it was sooooo worth it!

I hope that my gardens look that nice when I'm finally finished planting them all... that's what I picture when I look into my backyard anyways! LOL

Oh, I would have been so excited to visit this one! It's especially nice to visit a hybridizer's garden and see what they see. I guess, in this case, two hybridizers' garden!

Wow... another beautiful garden! Thank you for taking the time to post all these pictures. I am so happy to be able to see more gardens!! I think I am going backwards, 3 - 2 - 1...opps!

Are these open gardens or are they part of a club tour? If you have a list of local LI gardens, I would love a copy... maybe I can talk the BF into going.

Jean- They don't sell at these at all, some of these people hybridize but these are private gardens, not sales gardens.

Last weekend I went to Carolyn Youngs and that was an open garden, meaning they advertised it and come one, come all. They even had news channel 12 there which is our local Long Island news channel. These are the kinds of things that would be announced (and in this case were announced) in the community events section of the newspaper if you notify them.

These gardens this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday are only for members of the Long Island Daylily Society and called Members Only Tour Gardens. I am sure if a member brought a friend with them who is not a club member, no one would kick you out but the event is ment for club members to show off their daylilies to other club members.

They are set up in a certain order, in other words garden one from a certain time in the morning, two mid day and three in the afternoon. You go to them in order and would not show up at the afternoons garden three first thing in the morning and vice versa.

Open gardens are usually all day or most of the day like from 10 to 4 and you get there whenever is convenient for you as they are expecting vistors in the garden all day for the posted hours.

There are more open gardens next weekend so I should be going to more daylily viewings. These were announced by flyers sent out to club members but I don't know what else they did to get people to come.
