ROS root systems

I'm thinking about planting an ROS Red Heart in a container & wondered what information you can provide me re: their root systems.

ROS in my area usually grow to about 6-12ft high and slightly less in width.

In my searches for this answer within this forum, I found one reference to ROS trunks of 14" diameter, but I've never seen anything like that in North Central Texas. If you're in the D/FW area and know otherwise, can you chime in?

I've kept some in a pot. They do grow fast so I had to trim the roots every spring or fall. Worst case scenerio is to root a few stems if it gets to much to handle and get rid of the larger plant. Some of the ROS here are 15-20 years old and don't have that size. They are large though and have about 6in stems. It has been pruned back every year though.

One Question, why are they in pots? They sure are hardy enough to winter over as far as Michigan.

I just bought a couple of ROS at the Bluestone Perennials 50% off sale about twenty minutes ago (gotta convince Hubster that I SAVED money, not SPENT money!), so I just read about this very subject. ROS seems to bloom its butt off with very little water; other than when they are first planted and getting established, they don't need supplemental watering at all unless it's a heavy drought. Given that, I would think that they wouldn't compete much with the hostas. Also, the ROS root system shouldn't extend beyond its dripline, so unless your ROS is going to be HUGE, I don't see a conflict. I'd love to see pictures when you're done!

I think you can get some info from your water company. If you mix your own fertilizers you can compensate for the minerals that are present in various amounts. I just bought an RO system and I haven't used it yet but I can't wait. I was looking for the highest quality ones which were very expensive. I started looking through a very well known internet auction site(I don't know if I can say their name but the name has four letters). Anyway I found nicer quality/more expensive ones. One day I was searching and I found some that were cheaper because a company will start some at a cheap price and let people bid away. I got lucky and got a new six stage RO system with deionizer for $50 with shipping. I say just keep looking on this auction site and be patient because it could take a month or two but you can find a good price. I hope this helps.

Rooting hormone is butyric acid ( labeled a bioactive chemical ) and as a cutting stimulate is ideal. But this acid can damage mature roots or even plants nearby. It is actually considered a hazardous material and you are cautioned not to place it near water supplies. Might just me a "don't sue us if your child gets sick on it' warning but I wouldn't use it on a mature plant. Alfalfa meal is what many gardeners use to help the roots mature. Alfalfa has a hormone that stimulates growth.

I'd like to plant one near the house, but I don't want to take the risk of the roots damaging the foundation. So I'm considering a very large pot instead.

I have them growing right next to the wall all around the house. 20 years ago I had NO idea what I planted...then I left and 2 years ago I came back.
So far..no problems. 2 are even on top of the septic tanks...no problems there yet either...knock on wood
