Hostas and Rose of Sharon and Hibiscus

Does anyone know if the root system of a Rose of Sharon and a Hibiscus will compete with the hosta roots for water. I'm planning to place a rose of sharon in a bed with my hostas and a hibiscus close to another hosta. Thanks.

both shrubs require full sun for best performance ...

putting them in a shade bed might not be best ...

i do NOT know the answer about making shade with said shrubs and putting hosta under... though ROS tends to seed to the point of invasiveness ... in some areas ...

The hostas are all in full sun, well mulched, watered and spectacular. I'm looking to put the rose of sharon approimately 3 feet away from the hostas,in the centre of a bed, just as a specimen, and the hibiscus to one side of another hosta in another bed. Where there's a will for hostas to perform there's certainly a way. In fact, I just potted up about 20 seedlings from all various hostas. Now that's cool!!!

Hi ,ive been gone for a long time ,couldnt get anything i didnt have. miss tradeing , i do have some hibicus seeds they are mixed up, one kind of plant i have is white with red center , the other is lord baltimore red. if you want to trade and i send you all the samekind of seeds , ill send you the first seed pod of the one you didnt get i promise .the only thing you have that i am interest in is, bunny tail grass rain lily pink rain lily check out my list, i do have to update but just getting back in the grove of this Happy gardening

Thanks for your research. I must admit that the one I saw actually had zone 5 written on it. Funny how they don't specify Canadian zone 5 or USDA, especially when so much stock sold here is shipped up from the states. Makes you wonder why they would bother to stock something like that at my local Canadian Tire, and Loblaws. I guess they haven't figured out the zone thing themselves. On the experimental side I have actually overwintered a Hibiscus Syriacus Blue Bird for about 10 years, but then one year at the height of 7 feet tall she died. I'm sure Blue Bird is a Canadian zone 6, possibly 7. Although I'm trying babies from the Blue Bird only one has overwintered two winters (so far) and so that is why I'm looking for a hibiscus that is more hardy in a purple, but with that kind of height. So, Lavender Chiffon likely isn't any more hardy than Blue Bird. I'll have to see how lucky I feel when I see it marked down. Mary

I live in Canada in a city in Ontario. I believe that I am in Zone 6. I have had Rose of Sharon at my home for a couple of decades. I have pink, purple and white with a red throat, but one day one of my seedlings turned out to have a white bloom with a white throat. My backyard has too much shade and root competition and the Rose of Sharons there have been slow to grow, but my pink one is mature. I also have three Rose of Sharons at the side of my house, located against my brick wall and close to my neighbor's property. It is there that they grow beautifully, with abundant blooms, beginning early. There is a huge difference between these Rose of Sharon and the ones in my backyard. I have determined that the Rose of Sharons require at least several hours of sun or more and a sheltered spot is ideal. I have been growing Rose of Sharon from seed and have found that the shrub will produce blooms in the third year of growth. But last year I decided to take two cuttings from my friend's double Rose of Sharon (hibiscus syriacus). It turned out to be an interesting experiment. Both cuttings "took" and I overwintered the cuttings in my house. Early spring they developed dust mites. When it was warm enough to put them outside in their pots, I did that. They were sprayed for the dust mites. I think the pesticide was too strong for the plant and the leaves curled up. But I proceeded to nuture them! This is what amazed me: the cuttings are quite small (maybe 10 inches high and one of them has buds on it! Now mind you the leaves still don't look that great, but I looking forward to seeing the bloom. My conclusion: much better to take cuttings. I am thinking that by next year the leaves should look "normal."

Image by: wintersown Rose of Sharon Seed Pods Rose of Sharon is one of the most common summer-flowering ornamental bushes in North America. Its old fashioned charm, hibiscus-like flowers and affordability make it a garden favorite. Rose of Sharon seeds are a bountiful food source for non-migratory birds during the winter, these bushes should be part of all habitat gardens. Seed collection is easy. Allow the flowers to fade, do not shear back or prune the bush after flowering. Seed pods are somewhat tear-shaped, fat and nearly an inch across, immature pods are medium green. When mature they turn dusty brown and split apart with a star shaped opening. Remove the mature pods and allow to dry for a few days to ease with seed removal. Several dried pods can be placed in a tightly lidded plastic container to be shaken, the rattling will loosen and release the seeds from the pods. Remove the empty pods and puff the chaff away to have clean seeds. The seeds themselves are reddish brown, flat discs, and a little more than a 1/4" across.

I just bought a couple of ROS at the Bluestone Perennials 50% off sale about twenty minutes ago (gotta convince Hubster that I SAVED money, not SPENT money!), so I just read about this very subject.

ROS seems to bloom its butt off with very little water; other than when they are first planted and getting established, they don't need supplemental watering at all unless it's a heavy drought. Given that, I would think that they wouldn't compete much with the hostas.

Also, the ROS root system shouldn't extend beyond its dripline, so unless your ROS is going to be HUGE, I don't see a conflict.

I'd love to see pictures when you're done!

ROS like full sun and given any sort of care will grow like a weed. They can grow as much a 12 inches a season once established and will spread their branches as they get older. Trimming is a must if you want to maintain a specific size or shape. They also drop dead blooms so if you like your hosta area tidy this plant is going to spoil that look. They also attract bees in large numbers.

Thank you so much "imahockeymom". The rose of sharon isn't going to get very big because I really don't like them very big anyway, so I plan to keep it trimmed and neat so it's in line with the lushness and cleanliness of the hostas. Now I just have to figure out what hibiscus I want to adorn the other bed. I'm going to try to get my son to help me with posting pictures because I've never been able to figure it out. I'd love to be able to share my photos with everyone.

Curlylocks I have a bed of hostas planted under an ROS (the ROS was pre-existing). Most of the hostas in that bed are about five or so feet from the Rose of Sharon and are doing well. The only drawback is the ton of seeds ROS drop every year. I have to be really diligent about picking out the hundreds of seedlings each spring unless I want hundreds of more ROS, kind of a pain but I do love it when it blooms.

I've had the same experience as shade tolerant with ROS. Tons of seedlings each year, so much so that I ended up removing them. On the positive side I can tell you from experience they are deep-rooted, so that aspect should not be a problem, it's just a matter of whether you want to deal with the seedlings.
