my basil is dying please help!!!

I recently transplanted my basil into individual cells. When I did I used a fish emulsion fertilizer and sprayed it on top of the plants.it has been a week now and the plants are all turning brown and look like they are dying I water them everyday and they sit in the Sun for about 9 to 11 hours.I don't know if they're dying because I am NOT watering them enough or because I sprayed the fertilizer on top of the plants when I transplanted. They're not completely dead just turning brown at the edge of the leaves I want to save them before they die.

Plant leaves can be burned by fertilizer. Are the plants in the sun outside, just recently moved there? The sun can scald plants that have been indoors. Either thing could have damaged your plants.

In all honesty, I have never-ever added fertilizer any of my herbs - basil included. In good soil, it isn't needed. Some herbs, in fact, rather hate overly rich soil.

They have been going outside way before I did this but they where in clusters vs single plants. I only put fertilizer because I transplanted them into individual cells and they said that to use some to help it along.

DIpps, you cannot start a new basil plant from a dry leaf. One normally may grow a new plant from a stem cutting, BUT I would NOT try to propagate a new plant from this scale-infested one you have as it is a near 100% probability that the scale insects will come with it. Must strongly disagree with floral_uk about the adventitious root theory! But yes - daily watering is too much. I was interested to see that two people have posted photos of basil showing scale infestation. In all my decades of gardening I never have seen scale attack basil. I only have scale problems on my 3-year-old potted bay tree, and then only starting indoors in January. Outdoors during the summer it is fine. I am assuming there must be enough predators controlling the pests then. Indoors, I must resort to the alcohol swab cleaning technique.

curdoroy, I concur that it might be an overwatering or moisture problem. I wouldn't be concerned about losing the occasional bottom leaf, but if you say that the spots are appearing on leaves higher up, then you might have a problem. I think your plant would be happier outside. Though it gets plenty of sun in your south-facing window, it would benefit from the fresh air outdoors. The gentle winds and breezes would also strengthen the plant. What I would do is move it to a shaded porch for two or three days and then move it out into the sun gradually. Snip off the top two leaves to encourage bushiness. Also, fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer such as 30-0-0 weekly at the recommended dosage. If you prefer to have an indoor plant, take a cutting of about 1/3 off the top which you can root in a glass of water and then replant in a pot and grow in your window. This does not guarantee that the black spot problem will not reoccur. Newtoherbs, You can plant the oregano and thyme in the ground since they are perennials and will come back next year. The basil is an annual. You can also plant it in the ground or keep it in a pot. If you collect the seeds, you can sow them next year.

In most cases, gnats are more a nuisance of a more serious underlying problem than a threat to plants, but bad infestations can lead to root damage, as already noted. The 'more serious' underlying problem relates to soil choice and watering practices. Gnats are not usually a problem in soils that drain well or plants that are watered appropriately. For example, I water about every 4 days while plants are indoors and never have gnat issues because of the soils I use. When using more water-retentive soils, allowing them to dry down to appropriate moisture levels before subsequent waterings goes a long way toward eliminating the type of environment gnats prefer (moist and rotting plant matter). There are ways to eliminate most of the excess water that tends to refuse to leave the pot when it's only gravity putting on the pressure. For instance, after watering you can hold the plant over the sink and move it downward, then smartly reverse directions to upward. This uses Newton's First Law of Motion to FORCE water out of the drain hole every time you change direction from downward to upward. Try it - it will make a notable difference. More on how to deal with water-retentive media here. Also, a wooden dowel (5/16" diameter - from any hardware or big box store) sharpened in a pencil sharpener will serve well as a 'tell'. But...but...but... it's only baking soda! Is it bad for seedlings? I read somewhere that they use baking soda spray for gnats and other tiny insects. Re the black fungus, my camera can't show it very well but in the last photo, the tiny leaf is black on one side. I'm thinking of separating them from the rest of the healthy seedlings. I hardened them the past few days although yesterday, we had a lot of rain so I wasn't able to take them out. Maybe it wasn't as gradual as I thought? Because I left them out the whole day today. The medium is compost with dried rice husks. The cups have holes on the bottom and drain fairly well.

I was having a browning/wilting issue with my Basil as well so I hit up my local county extension and this was the response they gave me. Hopefully it helps. I've also attached a photo of what my Basil looks like with the browning.

"The basil would benefit from more light and air circulation. Gradually move it to full sun (it will cook if you do it too quickly, think your first day at the beach). It may be staying overly wet. Also do not wet foliage when watering. Make sure the cup is not blocking air movement."

Mine looks the same way though my sweet basil is actually doing great so is my cinnamon basil for the most part it is mainly my lemon and Thai basil which is either not growing, browning, or bending over. The have been in full sunlight for a while now if you look at some of my older posts you can see them as babies. The only thing is now they are in individual cells. I may have over-watered (I really dk how to water them so much) them but I do water from the bottom. The only things that have really changed major is is split up the clusters and re transplanted them into individual cells. They got a little more sunlight now the weather is warmer and I did spray some fish fertilizer when I transplanted I used 1 tablespoon for a gallon of water like it said and I gave the plants a light misting.

The ones in the last pic/tray looks just fine, to me.

Basils love warm , humid weather. Mine are just sitting there, outside, in 4" pots. The nights are just too cold for them(mid 40 ish).

If they are in the sun for many hours a day and standing in those foil containers they might be burning up with the reflected heat. I also agree that you are probably overwatering. Plus spraying them straight after transplanting with fertiliser was not a good idea. Just-transplanted plants need a drink and a rest, not intensive force feeding;-)
