My first cat's EVER!

We just got home after a day out and as we walked onto the porch I noticed a beautiful caterpiller on my passion vine! Last week I noticed a butterfly flitting around the potted plant several times and this thrilled me beyond words since I've just begun growing plants this year hoping to attract butterflies. Also, a lot of them ( including the passionvine) are potted on the front porch. I found at least 6 cat's on the plant today. I know they will eat the heck out of it and that's ok, kinda, but should I leave them be or remove them to a container of some sort? I would love for my kids to be able to see and record the progress of a cocoon. Should I move the plant so the cat's don't get to my other plants? Is watering safe? Thanks for any info you can offer, I just don't want to screw this up!
