Two or three varieties in same pot

i have a number of 12 inch pots and would like to plant two varieties, three if possible in each pot

in one season do herbs mix flavor - such as two or three types of sage, thyme, or basil -

what are the rules - thanks for your help

As far as I know herbs don't mix flavors. You may get a nice combination of smells but flavor won't change. I doubt you could get 3 different herbs in the same 12 inch pot, maybe 2. There just isn't that much room for them to grow.

I have planted a mix of herbs in the same pot--three in a really big pot, about 20" across, I think. Just be sure that the herbs are compatible as to light and water requirements. The only caveat is don't plant mints close together--they make friends with each other and you end up with some strange tasting mints!
I agree with the previous poster in that a 12" pot really is too small for two herbs to thrive. Have you thought about planting one herb per pot, and grouping the pots?

well since i succesfully hijacked this thread, theyre pretty straightforward to make, i primed them with killz, used basic acyrlic paints, (red, blue, yellow, black, white) mix them pretty easily to create any color. use brushes that are stiff and use the texture of the concrete for shading using dry brush strokes. the elephants you have to make a stencil, use pencil, paint, then use sharpie marker for the final outline the paint dries fast too so you can easily redo or touch them up

Sorry, I was getting ready to leave earlier and missed some stuff. Ellen - For the most part this actually gets a little more forgiving the more you add on. I do have a few small areas (that nobody else would notice) where I over worked the stain. Sometimes you can kind of fix it. An additional coat helped, but didnÃ¢ÂÂt completely cover it. Awm - ItÃ¢ÂÂs General Finishes gel stain in Brown Mahogany. Massager - Thanks! What color did you use for your bookcase? Ladypat - I followed their instructions. The GF people are quite nice. I was emailing back and forth with a lady. She was very quick to respond and she sent me specs on how to go over existing finishes as well as raw wood. IÃ¢ÂÂm using a water based finished so the instructions said to use a scotch bright or maroon scrubby pad (I used the maroon pad) and a half and half mix of denatured alcohol and water. If using one of their oil based top coats you can use mineral spirits. IÃ¢ÂÂll have to wait three days before I can apply the poly. After the cleaning I sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and dusted well. Franksmom - Thanks. Yeah, I was thinking maybe if I did another coat I was going to go over that line! I tried a bunch of methods, but found I preferred just using the foam brush for the most part. Wiping off gave a more uneven appearance (for me anyhow) and you had to be careful not to remove too much. Felt like a huge waste of product. For the fronts I did revise my technique a bit and used a cloth in the edges and areas that had a little too much. I also found it was best to work from one side of the raised panel, try and keep a wet edge and blend, and continue vs. slapping it all on and trying to even it out. Tip for anyone going to do this - I was able to store my used foam brushes in a ziplock bag for a day or so. I had to work in sections and kept throwing brushes away every time in the beginning. Thanks everyone! I'm excited to wrap this up, paint, make the roman shade and recover the chairs, and the appliances...........so excited for them! Stay tuned.

I agree Babka---check those roots in the pot! This spring I went to a horticultural society's plant sale. The prices were great. But had I looked at the roots, I wouldn't have purchased a couple of the plants. Oh well. It's a fundraising event. Windymess---#2 did have the most growth (from 1 shoot to 4), but #4 went from 5 to 8. Wouldn't you want to have 8 shoots the following year rather than 4? Therefore #4 is the winner. Did we check the roots? No! Darn! Ken---the reason for purchasing the four is that (1) I bought the first one at 25% off. Then later they went 50% off. So I purchased another---if one is good, then two is better(!) and my friend bought two. It was only a small garden nursery and Joy Ride was the only one that I wanted. I don't believe in dividing a hosta in its early years. I think it sets it back. I grow a lot in pots so it takes a long enough time to grow to maturity. I often wondered which hosta was the best one to purchase and the reasons why. This just was the perfect opportunity to test out (unscientifically) the results! Jo---"The fuller the plant, the better the odds of saving a piece if it falters later on." I never that about that. I think that is an excellent point! dhaven---I think your process of choosing the best hosta is detailed and on point!

Two deep drawers for pots and pans or three?

I agree with homechef59 that those small top drawers can be valuable real estate. A deep drawer full of tin foil and melon ballers can quickly become a jumbled mess unless everyone who accesses the drawer is disciplined. Fundamentally, it comes down to what you want to store and where you like to find it. If you already have all the short drawers you could possibly need for holding boxes of ziploc baggies and garlic presses, then the big drawers might be useful. If you have lots of big pots and yogurt makers to store, then those big drawers could be the answer. For instance, beyond the essential shorts drawers, I like a drawer for knives (I like knife blocks, but I don't like them on my counter), one for spices (my new favourite thing) and one for junk (either I have a junk drawer or it ends up on the counter - I admit defeat). So, I need lots of short drawers. My friend loves having the right appliance for the right job, so she needs lots of deep drawers. Mentally unpack in your new kitchen and see what kind of space you need and want. If you are on the fence about what you need - you can add things to deep drawers to provide short drawer functionality (e.g. stores things in tupperware in the deep drawer or add some fancy drawer hardware), but you can't make a drawer deeper. I vote for three drawer stack, though.

You definitely need to do some homework to find out just how big certain herbs can get when they're fully grown! Beginners are usually very surprised at the results of their research. One mature parsley plant will just about fit a 12" pot. One very stunted basil will be very cramped in a 12" pot. One mint plant will outgrow a 12" pot before you can blink.

In short, a 12" pot is quite a small pot. It is suitable for use when 'potting on' as a plant grows (like children outgrowing shoes and needing the next size up, you won't get them an adult size to begin with). It will accommodate several small seedlings for a short while before they outgrow it and need to be put into individual pots.

You might get away with several coriander plants, or other smaller plants which don't mind a bit of crowding because they are quite short-lived - but consider it a very temporary measure.

I have a small, shallow wooden planter that might be slightly larger than 12" but not by much. I like to plan a prostrate rosemary, a thyme and sometimes a third plant depending on what I find at the nursery. Some of the thymes are very slow growing and the rosemary doesn't seem to mind being crowded. I have a lemon verbena in a pot that's about 12" across but deep. It turns into a small shrub during the summer. I like to plant lemon thyme at the base.
I grow several basils but I agree they can get very large so I have a few plants in each pot and do not plant anything with them.
Since I'm in NH with a shorter growing season, that might make a difference. A common garden sage grows fairly quickly and is happy becoming a small shrub in my garden. The variegated sages, however, grow very slowly and sometimes don't survive a New England winter. I would consider planting a variegated sage and a thyme in the same 12" pot but they would need re-potting in the fall.
