Pest plants you can't get rid of -- how do you cope?
Comments (3)I did the exact same thing with an allium that I bought. To be fair to me at the time, I was told it was A. cernuum, a weak species, but it was mislabeled. Whatever it is I have spreads by seeds, offshoots, and little bulbils that form on the seed head. I keep digging it out, spraying with roundup, and try to dry it out by withholding water, but it keeps marching on. At least it is only a problem in the spring. I have several more introduced weeds that are even worse. I'm contemplating getting a hold of some vapam, maybe I can find it next time I go to Reno.......See MoreHow do you get rid of polyurethane smell?
Comments (53)I'm sorry, I have not had a chance to get any charcoal. The smell is still there. Not as strong as it was a few weeks ago and after a month it is tolerable, but everyone who comes into my new room asks "what is that smell?" This is INSANE how much worse the smell is after this supposed VOC compliant crap. There is no way in hell this is better for you. for the first 3 weeks I could not even stand being in the room as I would get a headache after breathing this in for 20 minutes. I loved the old smell of the old stuff and it would be gone within a week. This smell is going on over a month and It is still lingering. I think we need to find another brand or get everyone to complain to these varnish companies to bring back the old formulas. Why did they even change it? How in the heck did they ever test this and Say "Yeah this is better!! You would have to have absolutely no sense of smell to think this stuff is good for anyone to breath or use. Do they really think by changing the smell or recipe of varnish we are saving the planet? It is ridiculous!! I'm so sorry I wish I had the answer for you. I just left my windows open a crack for days until it was tolerable. Also you could use a damp rid bag and hope that will absorb some of the smell. It is strong at first but I know at least these hanging bags smell better than the varnish!! You can get these at Lowes or HomeDepot in the cleaning isle....See MoreHomes Where Smokers Live - How Did You Get Rid of Odor?
Comments (38)cmarlin - if we keep them, I'll clean them, but no paint, I think they look pretty rich and even though old, I actually like them. I think I'll probably put in something like Silestone in a mocha color and it would look great. What will determine whether we keep them is if I can find a good match that will appropriately fit. kelpermaid, I think they painted in the house recently, though I'm not sure - going to try and find out. I know they've lived there for 6 years, so if they are the only people who smoked there in the last 25 years since it was built, at least 19yrs of it had no smokers - but not sure how bad the last 6 years have been. creekside - now you've TOTALLY confused me! In some cases, homes need to dry to the interior. Kilz will prevent that. So will some other products. A spot of Kilz here and there won't hurt anything. Rolling it on all the interior walls may promote mold growth. So, if you are going to use Kilz after cleaning with TSP or something like it, you can't paint everything?? I'm sure I'm not understanding something here - I'll try to read the info on the link you sent - maybe call the co. next week. Carol_from_NY -thanks, I think my cleaning list is growing by leaps and bounds. The way I'm going, I may have to put my mother on the top of the car and tell her to hold on to the luggage rack for the trip up I'm going to have so many supplies to take! Thanks for mentioning the steamer, I have one and wouldn't have remember to think about taking it. I've never heard about putting gum in for smells, that's a new one. I'll try ANYTHING to get the house to normal. Thanks for all you suggested. Well, at this time we are in limbo. Inspections turned up a few problems, two problems that could be major, one that definitely is and has to do with a foundation failure. I am trying to get the owners to agree to fix what's on the repair list I sent them - which isn't everything that needs to be repaired, I took on the cheaper and more easily aspects of it. Will know more next week whether the deal goes through or falls apart. Wish me luck!! Thanks again to all - everyone has been extremely helpful, and it's all appreciated! Oh, one more thing - my Mom was there during the inspection and told me they had a machine running to take the stink out and she thought it smelled better in there - was probably an ozone machine. My nose will decide (if we close on it, that is) THANKS!!!!...See MoreSomeones digging up my Bromeys!!
Comments (2)Hi Adam - I live in Australia so can't suggest what your problem pest might be, but we do get similar damage occasionally here from a small animal called a Bandicoot, and I thought if you have similar animals there, they may be the culprits for the digging. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandicoot I'd also like to say that I've been growing that plant for many years and find it's probably the most underrated Neoregelia of the lot. It is spineless; makes into a nice clump after a few years; will stand full summer sun here on the South Coast of N.S.W. as well as winter temperatures so low that the dog's water is covered in ice. When grown in good light it has a pleasing pink flush going darker in the centre when flowering and when grown in low light, although it doesn't have the pink flush, it's still a pleasing albo-marginated and easy to grow plant. I bought my plant with the name of Neo.'Sheba' and a friend has one called Neo. 'Bossa Nova' and they are so similar we can't tell them apart. According to the records, Neo. 'Bossa Nova' is a c.v. of Neo. compacta and Neo.'Sheba' is a c.v. of Neo. mcwilliamsii. The BCR has information on both but it now seems that Neo. 'Sheba' had a name change in 1995 to Neo. 'Skotak's Sheba'. It seems the experts are still arguing about the names, so what chance has a back yard grower got of getting it right. All I can say is check it out on the BCR at the following links: http://registry.bsi.org/index.php?fields=&id=7046&search=sheba http://registry.bsi.org/index.php?fields=&id=3306&search=Bossa Nova All the best, Nev....See Morexentar_gw
