Clerodendron Ugandense....

Blue Bower....Anyone growing this in full to almost full sun??

Got a starter from the plant swap and want to put in the ground now.

Is it drought tolerant once established??

I have one of these. I have had it for a little under a year. It completely died back with the 2 light freezes we had and lo and behold it has come back full force. I have it in mostly full sun and parts of it get a slight bit of shade around very late afternoon. I really didn't water it a whole lot after it had been established and it has done very well. It hasn't bloomed yet this year but it has some buds now.

Here's a picture excuse the rest of the mess we are installing edging very soon.

I grew mine in full sun and it did very well. It was killed in a bad freeze one year. I meant to replace it. It's a lovely plant, and doesn't seem to sucker like some clero's.

Thanks for the suggestions, Trini and Deanna. I love plumbago, but the small plant I put in the ground in November died back to the ground during the freezes in December/January. Not sure if a well established one would fare any better when it's below freezing. Ditto for Clerodendron ugandense. I don't have one but Floridata says it dies back to the ground after freezing temps also, so there would be no screen for much of the winter. I have a few ligustrums around the yard and that may work, but not my first choice. What about pittosporum? Any other suggestions? Thanks again. Marcia

This plant can be radically cut back each fall before taking it back inside, or you could treat it like a Brugmansia and put it in a non freezing garage with low/no light and allow it to go dormant at full size. Even here in relatively mild northern California, this tends to go semi-dormant in winter, although it will stay evergreen and even continue blooming if located in a warm protected spot with full winter sun. It tends not to get going in spring until the temperatures really warm up, so if you do cut back/allow to go dormant, don't despair if it seems late leafing back out, it just wants it to warm up first. Treat it like young tomato plants, as to when to put it outside, and you should be fine.

I would recommend giving it afternoon shade as mine all seemed to be very water-needy for the first several months.

Definitely ammend your soil with peat moss, or very good quality potting soil (especially if it comes with the water crystals that grow when you wet them!) and don't forget to mulch!

I'm so glad to find out the name of the plant I impulse purchased. Couldn't resist the blue flower faces.
Mine doesn't seem to like full sun but that's because it's been brutal this summer.
