Looking for St. Louis Blues Tomatoes

For many years we bought a variety of tomato plant that was labeled "St. Louis Blues". It was an excellent tomato. Deep bluish red.Uniformly round and smooth. It ripened completely, all the way to the stem, with no green core and no green shoulders. It was a mediun sized tomato, about 3".

All of a sudden, one year, we couldn't find the plants any more. Haven't seen them now for probably 15 years. We still miss them. No other tomato has satisfied us in all respects, as they did.

Being we were buying them in the St. Louis area, they might exist somewhere else under a different name?

If the description "rings a bell" would you please let us know what variety we could order seeds for that would likely be the same tomato?

I have no idea, but have you contacted the Seed Savers Exchange? They are in Decorah, Iowa and they have a web site. You should be able to google it with no problem.

There is a really neat seed company in Missouri called Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Family runned and owned. They are always on the look out for interesting seeds that grow into delicious vegetables. They have a web site:
www.RareSeeds.com. and they also have a garden forum. Maybe someone on the forum will have a clue?

Have you checked the Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service in your state? They will be in the phone book in the government section under county. They might have some ideas, or know someone to contact for further information.

Garden stores in St. Louis? I know from asking around at various garden stores locally who is into heirlooms. They may even be able to tell you if anyone is exchanging seeds locally. Maybe their is a club or gathering where they do this. And most of the time they enjoy talking with you about their passion.

Older gardeners? Local garden clubs? Local farmers, especially older farmers, or farmers who own "Century Farms." They should be more common where you are. They are farms owned and passed down in the same family for 100 years or more. Organic gardeners? All good leads.

What is the agriculture school in Missouri? Perhaps this tomato was developed there. Even if it wasn't, maybe they will have some leads for you.

Since I'm not in your part of the country, I haven't noticed if there is a Missouri forum on garden web. Maybe a regional forum. I'd sure post there.

Any local garden shows on the radio? There are a couple of popular ones here on two different radio stations and one guy in particular knows so much. He's hard to stump. Maybe you've got someone like that locally.

You'd think that if they were heirlooms, they would not disappear all of a sudden. Are they hybrids maybe?

Enough of my yakety yak. I hope you find that tomato. Sounds like a good one. And if you do find it, maybe you can save some seeds to offer on garden web some day. All the best.

I too have been looking for St. Louis Blues. We used to get them for a place in St. Louis called Waynewrights I believe but they have gone out of business. I was wondering though if you had found them or heard anything about them?? Maybe the two of us can share what we have done so far to try and narrow it down because I know my family and I would love to find these wonderful tomatoes again.

The few photos I've seen showed a plant looking like Cedrus deodara 'Repandens', one of several habit variants of Himalayan cedar sold routinely as weeping Cedar-of-Lebanon cultivars. Three distinct types are recognizable and more or less prevalent just in Seattle. 1. Scarecrow: A sparse, totem-like tree perhaps represented by older examples of full size as well as newer plantings, as there are tall specimens that look quite like it; youngsters in nurseries have few branches, resemble staked weeping Sierra redwoods; being Himalayan cedars they are quite glaucous when young, thus, presumably "C. libani 'Glauca Pendula'" (or vice versa), as well as "C. libani 'Pendula' 2. Blue Pyramid: A steel blue, comparatively low and spreading tree consistently having both a leader and large side branches; called "C. libani 'Pendula'" by nurseries; A fairly big one at South Seattle Community College arboretum (but not in the Coenosium garden donated by Bob and Diane Fincham) is labeled "C. libani 'Glauca Pendula'" (or vice versa); quite similar to the next except for habit and color; two, small, staked, not-yet-developed specimens I am growing could be interchanged except for color 3. 'Repandens': Forest green, variably sideways-oriented cultivar introduced by the old Clarke nursery in California; sent to Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC, where prominently placed specimen(s) may have been basis for more than one of multiple superfluous cultivar names used over the years, including C. libani 'Beacon Hill'

cfldoc, you are the man! And that is the tomato!!! Wow, unbelievable. The size, the color, the perfection with no marks at all. I need a tutorial. No matter how much I spray bt, I still get some tiny worm holes where the stem joins the fruit. So frustrating. Please keep posting your pics and your secrets. Now I gotta go spray bt again. I saw someone make St. Louis pizza recently - it may have been on ATK, and they made a point of saying that it has to be cut into squares, even though it is a circle! I might have seen it on the Travel Channel. Anyway, it looks like a decent enough recipe, but I have not yet put it on my list of things to try. If you love it after making it, I will add it to the list, however, as it appears to be a simpler way to make pizza dough - somewhat like cracker or biscuit dough. This is the new room with exsisting furniture? I do think a piece that will act as a landing spot in that nook is a better idea than a chair. It could be a table, bookcase, cabinet -- even a tall bookcase or armoire since yu don't have anything tall -- but do keep in mind depth and overall scale. Your room is already small for the upholstered pieces. In deciding what kind of piece, think about how your needs will best be served by something there -- what you want it to do raher than a space filler. Do you need an entry spot for coats and shoes? A spot to drop mail and packages when you come in? Do you have books and such or would shelving just be something to dust? Do you need media storage? Would you want a dry bar or serving area? If you don't know yet, don't rush into a furniture purchase -- work with what you have until you know what you need. When you do, a painted finish -- and consider a color for more interest than everything dark vs white -- and then some pillows to pick up the same color (yellow, orange, red, possibley green or blue -- Target has a Threshold Windham series in colors). Before you hide wires, have you tried the tv on the wall where the other chair is now with the sofa oulled down towards the door? It would separate the room from the door, but it would also create a bit of an entry hall and more of a pathway in the hall to the other rooms on the other side of the tv. Is either that or the current location a problem for glare on the screen? Would you be able to let in more or less light through the window with the TV moved? Do you have another room for that chair or possibly both chairs? If you have other chairs that are smaller that you could switch out for the ones in this room, it would help the room feel larger. Either way, you will need to limit yourself to one of the larger chairs in this room. Don't rush -- it takes some time to figure out how a new space is going to live for you. Look at other rooms and play with things you already have before adding more. It's a no cost way to test your ideas if nothing else.
