Free samples from Burpee?

A friend told me online that Burpee sometimes sends you free samples of heirloom seeds to try out or sometimes even recruits you to plant their seeds and produce more seeds for them. Is this true?

I have no idea. Have not ordered from Burpee, since George Ball bought the company. Too pricey for my budget. They did make an effort several year back to get into the heirlomm market, even to the point of having special "heirloom" seed racks in stores. Many companies do send extra trial packages with orders and they are usually openpollinated seed. You have to be carefull with "heirlooms" they are all open pollinated but many of them are recent introductions, some by amateur breeders, others were commercially introduced, and failed in the commercial market. Example is the tomato sold as the Arkansas Traveler, lots of hype and tall tales, but it one of two commercial tomatoes introduced by the University of Arkansas in the mid seventies, Traveler and Traveler 76 to be specific.

I bought some seeds from burpee this year, for having a purchase over $25 I got a free gift. 1oz of garden tone, enough for about 8 plants.

Where is everyone ordering from? I grew mostly Burpee last year and they mostly did well, had a packet of Okra from them that didn't germinate. They have their racks in the big box stores in this area in Spring (and Bonnie has the plants.) I was considering ordering from Johnny's Selected as my father orders from there and grows awesome stuff, or Gurney's my sister in law uses. Looks like for potatoes I am either getting Gurney's or Pinetree as they are the only ones who sell 2lbs that I found. If I order Burpee's basil today will it be this year's packaging? It did awesome last year and definitely want the same for next. Gurney's is $25 off any order of $50 or more from their 2015 catalog BTW, thru Dec 9th. Paul -- you can't stop there! Based on the postings recently, we know that HVX stays in the ground around an infected plant at least 18 months. So -- question: have you moved that June? What did you put in its previous place and is that plant infected? And, going forward, have you decided what you'll put in to complement hosta because we've been warned not to put another hosta in that ground unless you use a container -- or maybe you should check out those planting bags that some other have mentioned. In my area HD sells mostly Burpee, also ferry Morse, plus Ed Hume seeds. And some not so famous organic stuff. Burpee's concentration is on hybrids that is what makes their exclusivity. Heirlooms and OP are sold by so many marketers. Price wise, Burpee faces competition and have to cut prices to be able to stay on the supply-demand curve. I think great majority of people buy seeds from big box stores an they are the best vehicle for companies like Burpee to move the products. Their newer hybrids are usually sold a premium. If ordinary ones price 2 bucks the new ones are price like $3.50. Anyway. All I need just some Brandy Boy hybrid. The rest of my picks are all heirloom/OP. There this small internet store called: sample seeds shop (dot com) . they maybe over 100 varieties and the price is $1.26 per pack, Shipping about 3 bucks for average order. They also have peppers, vegetables , herbs. Worth visiting their site. I would never buy anything from Burpees online at inflated prices, as a matter of principle. The next vender to avoid is Bonnie.
