Question about Thai Pink Tomatoes

Hello,

I am looking for the Thai Pink Tomato seeds. I did find them on Tomatofest.com ($15 minimum) order and on Rareseeds.com

Since they are hard to find, I thought they might be difficult to grow and not as tasty as they claim to be. I've only ever grown two types of tomatoes: Sweet 100s from seed and a regular size tomato plant from Home Depot. Has anyone ever grown these before? Do you have any tips? Are they more susceptible to bugs and disease than normal plants since they are heirloom? If it helps, I live in Central Florida on the east coast.

Oops, Just realized I should probably post in the Tomato forum. I am going to do that now.

But if anyone knows of another place to get those Thai Pink Tomatoes, let me know! I did a search on Google and did not get many hits on places to buy them in the U.S. I got more UK hits than US hits.

If you mean the Thai Pink Egg, Baker Creek has them. Prolific bearer, but not to my taste.

Well, Peggy, if you say so too, then it must be true! I'm very glad I only grew one plant. I can't believe there's such a thing as a home-grown tomato that isn't even worth bothering to eat, and I grew Celebrity for several years, before I learned better. As for variability, the much-praised German Red Strawberry and Green Grape are ok, though nothing to inspire any excitement -- but I am holding off on judgment for these varieties until we get some decent tomato weather, or maybe I'll even try them again next year before deciding. (Of course, even in a bad year, Arkansas Traveller is always good.) But why on earth would a company send out free seeds for a yucky variety, thereby PROVING that their catalog descriptions are hooey?

Question about red rose or rose tomato

I looked back into my log records and found that trialed the "Rose" variety in 2001,; I was growing for restaurants at the time. My records indicate I got the seed in a trade from SE PA (indeed, that is Amish country). Some of my end of year ratings were as follows: Folliage desease tolerance/resistance 2.3 on a scale topped at 3.0. (Rutgers rated a 2.0) Size typically 3.5 to 4.5 OD X 2.0 to 2.5 deep. Yield 70% to sales, 20% to sauce or juice. Comments--Shows promise, very good tasting attractive fruits. So, I saved seed and then somehow forgot all about the variety. We were involved at the time in negotiations to sell our orchard and home to a developer, and 2001 was not one of my better managed years! Seeds now out of inventory and on deck for a 2010 growout!

question about freezing tomatoes

I have an abundance, YES, an abundance of paste tomatoes this year. I am very happy. I just let my fruits color up on the dining room table, then I put them into them freezer bags and into the freezer they go. When I need some tomato sauce, I just let them thaw a couple hours, then I put them in boiling water for a minute, take them out, let them cool for 10 minutes, peel off the skin and into the sauce cooking pot they go. You could make the sauce and freeze it if you wanted, as an alternative. That's probably better as you can get the exact amount of sauce you're needing for the meal you're making.

I did read in a new tomato book that these have poor taste and should be used for floral arrangement, egads!!! Mercy...that sounds as bad or worse than some tomatoes being described as spitters. Here are all the thread that come up in doing a forum search for recipe. Maybe you will find something in them. Here is one that might be of interest...lolWhat do you do with bad tasting tomatoes? I'd think about any tomato could be used for making salsa, or some sort of a well seasoned sauce, like spaghetti, or pizza. Sorry to hear of your disappointment with TPE. I grew these a couple years back and they were very productive, plants stayed fairly small and were very disease resistant. And although the tomatoes were among the most attractive I have ever seen the flavor was rather blah being quite tart with no sweetness. They are fine for use in a salad or somewhere where other flavors dominate. I would grow them again purely as an ornamental. The fruits change to white before turning pale pink and finally rose pink and the plants are very attractive when loaded with a mix of these colors. Very unique.
