Question about red rose or rose tomato

In my new T. book red rose is described as a cross between S. Brandywine and Rutgers - a perfect globe, excellent flavor as good as a tomato gets 11oz. In the Sand Hill catalog it is described as 2 to 4 oz. small salad tomato. Sand Hill also has one called Rose that is pink and 1 pound slightly oblate. I want to try the Brandywine/Rutgers cross. Can anyone clear this up?

Here's some data from the 2009 SSE YEarbook, of those who grew Red Rose:

IA, 2-4 oz
OH, 6-12 oz
TN, 10 oz
WI, 8 oz

Fruit size can vary depending on the specific season in which the above folks recorded their data. And yes, Red Rose has the parentage you specify.

The variety Rose is a compltetly different variety that was introduced by Johnny's Selected seeds several years ago and is a large pink beefsteak given to them by Dr. Grace Kaiser who was an MD to the Amish in PA and the variety is Amish.

And those who list Rose usually get fruits in the one pound range give or take.

Thank you, Carolyn, that is exactly what I need to know. Tomatoes are mysterious; they could have tomato TV shows and someone like Monk or Castle figuring it out. I would watch.

Hi - I was away for the day, but will now get back to your question about soaking the bands. Yes, the whole plant is submerged. Ya never know - there may be bugs hitching a ride on the upper leaves as easily as anywhere else on the plant. Some bands are pretty tall, so that's why the 33 gallon trash can - to fully submerge them. Also, I typically get 5 to 10 roses in a shipment, so I need the larger diameter to hold them all. If you only have 3, and they fit side by side in a smaller bucket with the tops of the leaves covered with water, by all means, use that. Fill the bucket first, and then carefully place (not drop) the bands on the bottom so as to dislodge as little soil as possible. You will need to lower them to the bottom slowly, to gently let the air in the soil come bubbling out of the pot. But once fully submerged, they will stay at the bottom just fine without disturbing the root ball. Then, when the time has passed, reverse the process and carefully remove them from the bucket. Here's what I found Apples are Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida Order: Rosales Family: Rosaceae Subfamily: Maloideae Genus: Malus Species: Malus domestica - domestic apple. Roses are Same except Subfamily = Rosoideae Genus = Rosa Species = Rosa speciosa. Plants of the same botanical genus and species can usually be grafted even if different varieties. Plants of the same genus but different species often can be grafted but the result may be weak or short-lived, or they may not unite at all. Plants of different genera are less successfully grafted, although there are some cases where this is possible. For example, quince, genus Cydonia, may be used as a dwarfing rootstock for pear, genus Pyrus. So I guess I answered my own question. Seemed like a good idea though. I'd like to have a rose hanging from the top of an apple tree.

Well guys, you know what, these are truly a most beautiful red - all of them, but red is the only colour my camera seems to have difficulty with. Very, very rarely does it show the true colour. 1, 4, 5 and 6 are all Loving Memory (aka Burgund). 2 is Ingrid Bergmen (but if it looks strange it is because when I went to photograph it, I held if forward and the Bl**dy head snapped off grrrr)! I think that would have been the nicest bud at the time. So I lay it down and took a picture, but however we are really enjoying it anyway with it's bottom sunk into a wee vase. :) 3 and 5 are LD Braithwaite - again colours not showing up well. You would probably get better answers on the main rose forum. I have a guess on the pink though. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.36346&tab=36&qn=2&qc=0 I've been admiring it, so the ruffles caught my eye. *edit I'm probably wrong. The one I linked says strong fragrance.

I am not finding any one else who likes this tomato. I am not finding much at all about it. I think if it were "as good as a tomato gets" there were be more written about it.

Hey Helenh; The Brandywine/Rutgers cross isn't really that Great. Rose is however,Spectacular. After growing it you'll stop caring about Brandywine and just focus on this variety. Tastes better than Brandywine and is more productive.

I grew Rose last year, the crappy year, and it did very well...tasted great, actually, and had few problems with it...

I grew Rose last year. Got the seeds from Baker Creek, I believe. I loved, loved, loved this tomato. Even in a bad year, it tasted phenomenal. I think it will be a mainstay in my garden for years.

I looked back into my log records and found that trialed the
"Rose" variety in 2001,; I was growing for restaurants at the time.

My records indicate I got the seed in a trade from SE PA (indeed, that is Amish country).

Some of my end of year ratings were as follows: Folliage desease tolerance/resistance 2.3 on a scale topped at 3.0.
(Rutgers rated a 2.0) Size typically 3.5 to 4.5 OD X 2.0
to 2.5 deep. Yield 70% to sales, 20% to sauce or juice.
Comments--Shows promise, very good tasting attractive fruits.

So, I saved seed and then somehow forgot all about the variety. We were involved at the time in negotiations to sell our orchard and home to a developer, and 2001 was not
one of my better managed years!

Seeds now out of inventory and on deck for a 2010 growout!
