New to growing!!

Hi, I'm moving to the south of Cyprus and want to grow my own herbs, tomatoes and strawberries...
I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to get started...
I have a balcony which gets great sun!!
I suppose I'm asking what materials I need, certain pots? Soil? Feed? Will I need to germinate all the seeds even though it's 20 degrees plus every day...
I'll appreciate any advice given and thank you in advance!!

You will have fun with your new venture. Hot weather herbs and certain varieties of tomatoes will do well in pots on your balcony. Strawberries are likely to be a challenge since your situation may be too warm and dry. Basil should thrive for you. There are helpful forums that can address your need for information about pots, soil, feeding, and watering. Three GW forums of value for information include Small Spaces / Urban Gardening, Balcony Gardening, and Container Gardening. Also, I would engage your neighbors and discuss what works best for them. Start observing what other people near your residence grow on their balconies that is herbal and edible. Enjoy!

I grow my strawberries in window boxes. If you can afford a Grow box they do really well in them. I use straw as a mulch to keep them from rotting. Do they have Agricultural centers over there? I get alot of good information from there. You could probably google Solutions For Your Life. It has alot of good gardening articles on it. Good luck! Happy Gardening!

George, I read about the resistance of the varieties you mention, but didnÂt imagine that would change so much per location. I have to have those seeds next year to try. Si, el cambio es muy grande, after the 6inches/14.8mm of rain yesterday, I had to wear my wooden shoes to go to see the vegetables LOL! ItÂs sooo strange to walk with them but they help in the mud, and you write so perfect Spanish. How come? Raisemybeds, we covered the tomatoes with that lightweight fabric, although not pretty, till now (cross my fingers) the tomatoes and pepper seem to like that protection. IÂve been earlier shaking the stems and was wondering if the pumpkin pollination would be so simpleÂ not so, as per what I read. Bill, yesterday I didnÂt turn the compost pile that I left to mature, since I saw there were some pumpkin seedlings showing up, and I thought, well, you never know maybe they grow nice. This morning guess what, they were gone, disappeared. IÂd eat Butternut Squash every day, casually found a grocer that sells it. Back in Argentina my mother had a piece ready for my arrival from the office nearly everydayÂ Now IÂve got some Butternut seeds popping up in a propagator. Violet, I know thereÂs lots of info. However, last year while I was "researching" what happened that time to the tomatoes raised by me from seed, my husband convinced me to check a bit less ugly bugÂs pictures and diseased plants on the internet, and just try again, strengthening precautions. Pumpkin is not so popular here for eating, but for Halloween, therefore availability of seeds for consume (ie. to grow without chemicals) is just starting. Firsthouse, this is only my second year starting from seed, but I can give you my plans, given we live in the same general area: This weekend, I'm starting bok choi, broccoli, cabbage and parsley seeds for a 3/1 transplant. I give them 60 days before transplant, since once they germinate, I've got them in an unheated garden shed where the growth time is a little slower than what the books say. I'm starting my tomato seeds around 2/15 this year for a 5/15 transplant. I waited until 3/15 last year, and didn't feel my plants got big enough before my transplant date of 5/15, so I'm starting a little earlier this year. 3/1 I sow my peppers, onions and herbs. I don't put peppers out until 6/1 and they grew reeeally slow for me last year, again most likely because I'm not keeping them really toasty while they start. Peas get direct sowed in March and April. Pole beans, squash and cucumber get direct sowed around 5/1. I started in pots last year and was amazed at how fast they grew (and grew out of!) their pots. I've learned they're best put right in the beds. Like I said, I'm also fairly new to starting from seed, but I was pretty successful last year, and am making some adjustments based on what I learned. So take what you can use of the information and toss the rest. And congrats on the Christmas presents! I'm really enjoying growing from seed because I love the control I have over what I grow and when I plant it. It's also fun browsing through those catalogs in the cold months and daydreaming of my lush summer garden.

Hi Rifis - I cannot recall who posted that but since you're repeating what I read, I do believe you were the reply-ee who said it's just 1 bud ! And to expand on that, I also posted my observations on how the canes look coming out of the base even if it's 1 bud. Granted, the cane development could also be due to how it was pruned and received by -seller- - canes in different areas coming out vert as if each cane is independent of itself - some shrubs seems to have like 2 main -thicker- canes with about 1-2 main branches coming out of it etc, etc, All varied on how canes from the base - and honestly, I still can't wrap my head that it's all from 1 Bud ?

If you want a branch to grow straight up, you could try tying up an existing branch to a wood chopstick. Poke the chopstick into the dirt gently to avoid destroying a lot of roots. It may take a year or more, IME, for the tied up branch to get the idea or it may flop over again anyway. IME, after feeding lightly with a weak liquid fertilizer, it takes three or four weeks to see new growth the size of a small match head.

While it is not a problem I generally have in my climate, you may need shade if it gets really hot on your balcony. The sun can literally bake the plants. Always see what other gardeners (even those with only balconies!) do where you live. Take some cues from what works for others.

Are you already there? Or planning from afar? I'm sure you will find a wide range of lovely teracotta pots available and there is no worry about frost damage. Also think about a citrus tree. The mandarins there are unbelievable. In the spring some pots of narcissus are a must. The smell is gorgeous. Basil will love it too. Bay and rosemary may well not be worth growing as they will be all over the place anyway. Watch out if you dig any soil to put into pots as there is widespread infestation of Bermuda Buttercup (Oxalis pes caprae). There are plenty of nurseries and garden centres to pick up supplies, plants and seeds. As fatamorgana says - ask the locals. They know all about growing in their region. Loads of Brits retire there so gardening is big.
