Some beauty from the last few days (and something ugly)

I worked outside all day and now it's getting cloudy and drizzling, so I have some time to post some more pictures.

Some daylilies are showing their last blooms while others are just starting up. The japanese beetles have destroyed all my rose blooms so today I cut all the buds off (how depressing) and those horrid red lily beetles have ruined many of my lovely oriental lilies... but the good ole' daylilies are untouched and looking lovely. I'm so glad I discovered daylilies! Otherwise I would be so depressed right now with all the damage from the bugs. (Be warned: After the pretty pictures, I have some very ugly and sinister photos to show what the bugs are doing to my flowers).

The daylilies are very nice. I like them all. As far as the lily beetle goes, the only thing I know to do is spray with Neem oil. You can get it at most nurseries or even HH. I spray at night when the bees and butterflies aren't active as much. Hope that helps. Marg

Oh Celeste, what a horrible thing to be happening to your lovely lilies. You have so many beauties and it's a shame that these have to be spoiled like that. There must be something that you can spray that will not hurt the bees and butterflies. But daylilies really are a joy because by and large pests pretty much leave them alone. So usually lots of summertime perfect flowers. I declare all the daylily blooms my favorite! My very, very favorite is SOUTH SEAS.

LMAO Lucy!!! I have always thought they were cool looking, but I have never had a Leopard Slug in my yard before. Last night when the power was out, and the rain & lightning slowed a bit I went out to check out the damage..I had already cleaned up once yesterday and was dreading what I may find that time..well, since my yard was flooded I went out barefoot...I STEPPED ON THAT HUGE THING WITH MY BARE FEET!! It was dark, and I thought, O no, another brug bud flew off it's plant..Used the camera to get some light from the red eye reduction light..and saw THAT! O man, he was huge! I stepped on him so hard, I hurt him internally and he died 2 hours later. Of course I wasnt carrying that thing into the back porch in my hand, he was just toooo big, so I grabbed a plate from under a plant to bring him in to show the kids. NO we do NOT eat off the slug plate, and nor will we EVER! LMAO!! Thats my son's hand in the pic, he pretended to kiss it and I dang near puked! I knew there was something big living in the garden, I have had really big half dollar sized holes in some of the brug leaves. Giant chunks missing from the edges. I hope he was the only one..yeah, I know, but a girl can hope! thanks Siam :)

Deangreen, that is a birdhouse sold by Rock City. We had to almost rebuild it to make it stable, but I like it because of memories of barns with "see Rock city" signs painted on the roofs. Nat4b, Cast Your Crown is not a large bloom, but packs a lot into the space. Thanks, Jean. That's too bad. A couple of my daylilies took some damage, but I didn't lose any. I did lose so0me roses though. Maryl, The hot pink is Wall of fire, and the red to the right of it is a Munson called African Plum...it is red, but has some purplish hues in it as the light strikes it. I am enjoying Gus, since he likes to keep me company when I'm in the garden...especially when I pick blueberries for some reason. Ikad, it is another small bloom, but such a pretty one. Mantis, he is a pretty little cat. Much smaller than my indoor tabbies. I don't know how it is, but the path isn't as spacious as it once was. I am planning a change in the big front bed this fall. I plan to move the large lilies to another area and plant daylilies and hecheras there. Mantis is right, Chris. that is Wall of Fire...it is an eye-catching bloom and is little bothered by thrips. No, Juliana, Rocks Cry Out and Cast Your Crown are both toothy, but The colors are similar. CYC is about half the size bloom as RCO. RCO has a two color effect to the petals, but not the sepals, (bitone) and CYC had the same color on petals and sepals. CYc has is toothy on sepals and petals. See below for comparison. CYC is much smaller and is red with the golden toothy edge: Because of the color similarity and the toothiness, I'm sure they are "kin", but haven't looked them up. As for being at peak, I have a lot of plants already putting up instant rebloom so who knows how it will end up. I'm sending as many daylilies as he will take home with my brother this week. He is coming up from Shreveport and wants some daylilies. kay

Wow! Our DSL was down last night so I couldn't get online. Florence - thanks! I love that DR DEBAT too. He's gotta be one of my best purchases from Vintage Gardens so far! Niecey - thanks for asking. I been busy busy busy! Drip system installations, moving my kid to SoCal, dealing with my elderly parents, working.... I hardly have time to to do anything! Diane - thanks for the tip on the drip stuff. I kinda knew that, but like I remember to take hot water out there!! LOL Anyway, it's been warm enough out there that the hoses are easier to put on lately. Plus I wear those tight grippy neoprene-coated knit gloves and that helps alot. So LADY X is more lavender for you, huh? I kinda like the pics I've seen where she's more pinkish. Guess I'll pass on that one. Cormac - THE CHESHIRE REGIMENT is one I got from Pickering many many yrs ago. It's a Fryer rose. It's always a great performer, altho this yr it seems to have bloomed a bit less. The blooms are beautiful, but they do blow a bit fast. The color is a sort of apricot, pink and cream blend. I'll have to check scent, as I don't remember if it has any. Cziga - florist roses are roses grown for the florist industry. They are usually hybrid teas, with little to no scent, and are bred to last a long time in the vase. Many of them are becoming more and more popular with us crazy rose growers. And we used to have a great source for the plants, but they closed up for some reason. Some of the florist roses do not look the same in your garden as they do from the florist. Many of them are grown in greenhouses, and some change color when grown out of doors. If you ask your florist, they often do know the names of the roses. Our Safeway market carries them in dozens, with name labels on them. I have tried to root some florist roses, but haven't had much luck. I know many people on the forum have been successful tho. Harry - Thanks!! Carla - I work at an Ace Hardware store, so I'm building my own system. We carry several different brands of parts. We just have them in bins, in bulk, and ya pick whatever ya want to make up the system. I'd love to have the timers wired-in, but that'll be something for later down the road. Right now I'm using battery-operated timers. And boy, let me tell ya... ya gotta be careful with this stuff. I had a ton of stuff off one hose bibb, with 4 different lines running. I could only run two at a time because the pressure was way too low, so I thought I'd take the pressure reducer off and run them all at once. NOT!!! As soon as I shut the timer off, the pressure blew the timer right off the bibb! What a dope! Our water normally runs at 150 psi, but with the reducer it's at 45 psi. So, just remember that. You can't take the pressure reducer off!! Jean - I'm tellin' ya, I have had so much luck with the spray I've been using. I don't understand why it's not working for you. The damn deer come into my yard, but as long as I spray every 10-14 days, they don't touch my roses! Or anything else I spray it on.

Beth for Kya, what you�ll need to do is train the leave it command...Anytime Kya gets anywhere near the sprinkler or any rose bush you shout "leave it", and then the working command come! to substitute the behavior and give her a small treat or a good play tuggy session. Tuggy whether it's a soft toy or a tennis ball attached to the rope allows Kya to work off her Border Collie side of the gene pool by tugging and growling and shaking that tuggy. Most B.Cs love tuggies because they get eye contact with their owner and a real hand to body interaction with their owner.... We adore you here Inga, (rosie smiles and hugs) but hehe, that muzzle suggestion would throw most Border Collie owners into seizures because BCS are extremely hyper-sensitive dogs. And my Eluane is now cringing and trembling in her corner. Also people need to understand the Border Collie's obsession with chasing and herd water. Never run the sprinklers while she is in the backyard. Save it for pre-dawn with a set timer. Take a look at this link.. It tells the whole story, about how water spraying makes B.Cs go cuckoo. They think of it as time to pounce attack and play! Beth the only reason why I didn't tell you this right away was because I wanted to be sure everyone wrote their fan replies on your beautiful roses first before I derailed everyone on Border Collie issues, lol! Border Collies and Sprinklers Once you own a border collie or a B.C. mix great efforts have to be made to understand the breed so that you can really enjoy them and understand how to work with them.... They require tons of time and attention to train but they are so brilliant. Border collies do not settle down until 3.5 years of age and even when they do settle, to be a truly happy dog, an owner has to be able to give them a job to do and to engage them as much as possible. They were always meant to accompany a shepherd 24-7. That is why one has to treat them as if you were their shepherd. That's why most owners have to do things like dog agility, frisbee competitions that sort of thing....But with BCs you get endless devotion and excitement, lol! Life never gets boring when one owns a border collie! :D

I hate those red lily beetles. Not only did they destroy my oriental lilies two years ago, they pretty much killed a couple of my phloxes too. All the daylilies look great. Nefertiti is my favorite one!

That is so very frustrating when things mar plants :( Hope you can find a solution that works for you.

Nice pictures. I especially like Siloam Simple Simon - very interesting and pretty bloom.

BTW I was picking Japanese Beetles off my Mountain Ash when a sparrow swooped in and grabbed one off a branch above me. So I watched the two bird houses the next two days, one with sparrows and one with wrens. They are both feeding broods right now. They eat up the beetles faster than I can get to them. They're not fancy birds but I really appreciate them now. I am considering more bird houses.

I am so sorry Celeste. I had the battle with the Japanese beetles earlier. Beverly, that is so encouraging. If the birds just realize it is food, our beetles battles will be much easier.

Ugh!! Hate those dang bugs. I am trying so hard not to spray. I have had the worst year with thrips. Have had sooooo many rose blooms with brown on the edges and spotty daylilies. I decided three years ago to stop spraying for bugs and its really really hard once the beetles get here and now I have those dang green grasshoppers that eat up my buds. It seems once one is about gone here comes another. I am clueless at what to do about the thrips though. Soooo frustrating. Sorry to rant on and on!!

Your blooms in both post are gorgeous Celeste. As is all the butterflies and sweet Zues and Babe. I too love Party Pinafore (think it was in the other post). Your garden scenes and lilies in those clusters are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, Judy

Oh no not only JBs but those red monsters too! Poor lilies. Hate all those bugs! I actually took a picture of JBs just starting on a rose, like whole big cluster of them, now that's really ugly pic and I'm not going to post :) I posted it on some other forum and people said they couldn't look at it. Well they ate ALL the petals in just 3 days.
I hope those sparrows and wrens will come to our gardens too!

Pretty d.lily pictures, but love the shot of Pink Super Spider. I am definitely getting this one in the spring. Also, now I know what those lily beetles look like, so I can watch for them next year. Avedon

For those of you who asked about a source for 'Pink Heaven' lily, you can get it from either The Lily Garden or B & D Lilies (mailorder). It is a lily of heavy substance (thick stems and waxy blooms) and smells divine. Last time I checked they both had 'Conca D'Or' as well, which I have posted before and was popular.
