Banned In Boston - No scapes this year ;-(

I can't believe that one of the ones I planted last summer, BANNED IN BOSTON, has not sent up one single scape this year.It is not a massive clump of fans either so not sure what is wrong with it this year.

Does anyone else grow this one? Have you gotten scapes? .

Mine didn't bloom either. The lawn guy cut it down by mistake.

I've had a few this year that were new in the ground last year that didn't put up any scapes...
Blackberry Candy (3 big healthy fans though) this one was blooming when I bought it last year locally

Oooh, total scoop on that DR! What a trunk! The other thing is really cute, I didn't think it was a fig, similar leaves though, so what came to mind. Papyrus. It's interesting (nicest thing I could think to say.) Failing to find tha love for it... Yes I have lasagna'd, too many times to count, here and in OH. I don't know which of the grasses we have, there are several kinds, but it's a vine. I think St. A grass is rhizomatous, if not a vine also. (My comments to follow are about tenacious southern grasses, not the stuff up north...) Sometimes pieces 4 feet long come up when I pull what I think is a sprig. Anyway, it's not easy to kill like rye or fescue grass in OH. It has to sit in a pile for like 3-4 months to actually die enough to even compost. If it doesn't stop raining, I may have to put all of the recently removed grass in a plastic bag... at least it takes so long to make seeds, we rarely get any. Compared to tilling'n'picking'n'sifting, or straight digging, I prefer it every time I can find the patience to wait. You're right, you can't trust one layer of cardboard to do the trick. It's not heavy enough, and some light can get through. I've pulled pieces of this grass near a corner of the house that have gone under the house (dark, skirted) for several feet before finding a way out of a crack on the other side. I put 2 layers of cardboard, then a lot of heavy, wet stuff to make it conform to the soil surface, and be too heavy for anything to push through. The potted plants were originally holding corners and edges but as I've accumulated more OM to put there, I've just set them on top of that. And that's (grass staying alive under there so long) why I'm not planting in it until next spring. I don't want to pull/dig grass there, and won't trust that it's really dead until then, especially the bahaigrass. That stuff has big, tough rhizomes and there's quite a bit of that too. Before planting, check to make sure it's dead with this tenacious grass even if it's been months, and cut all the way around with a shovel, well before planting, to make sure none of it is still secretly alive from being attached to the surrounding untouched grass. I've discovered pieces alive on one side, looking dead as it passes through smothered area, and still alive on the other side, still connected. This cut will also make sure the border works without starting out with unknown live grass under it. Expose a small part for a couple weeks and make sure grass doesn't start growing (after the yard wakes up, if it goes dormant where you are.) Sheet metal seems to kill it faster, if you have any, but then you're at Sq-1 when it's removed, naked dirt that hasn't had something decomposing over it for a while. Nice clean edge tho! Also like to make beds wider by laying the (yet intact) bags of mulch I will spread there later.

I don't see how the New Hampshire store owner could justify charging this guy to get his fish back, either -- at least no more than the cost of feeding and keeping them for however long he had them until the guy got there to retrieve them. I'd have a little more ethics than that, and I'd certainly think most people in the pet trade should, since they're supposedly animals lovers if they're in that business. As for the Asian carp issue, that TRULY IS a nightmare. I saw a story about it on Discovery HD recently, about how they're migrating up the Mississippi and its tributaries and the serious lengths they're going to by running electric current along the bottom of the canal that leads from the Illinois River to Lake Michigan to try to make sure they don't get into the Great Lakes. An Illinois fisheries biologist was videotaped and interviewed as he drove his boat through the river with outriggers running small electric currents into the water to get the fish to jump out so he could net them, weigh them, estimate their numbers and so forth. Some of them were HUGE and he'd caught one female that had 7 pounds of eggs, alone, in her, yet all he could do was take his stats and put them back (I'd think they'd destroy the ones they caught). He DID say that unlike the ugly orange carp people fish for in carp lakes around here, these are supposedly good eating fish, and they're trying to encourage people to fish them for food to try to reduce numbers, but that they're so prolific, there's little chance they'll ever be eliminated, as they've pretty much taken over the rivers. I'd also note they looked NOTHING like koi, and I think the relationship is pretty distant (although I'm guessing if koi and goldfish can interbreed, koi and asian carp probably can, too). These fish were big and ugly, though. Frankly, in the kind of numbers they exist in the Mississippi and its tributaries, if there's a chance that releasing koi into the wild in ANY stream or river could create such a nuisance, I'm surprised they're not illegal EVERYWHERE. We don't have any Mississippi tributaries here, or in the Northeast, like in Maine, but I think there are just a half dozen major river systems around the country, and if anything that prolific gets released into any of them, it will likely take over the entire system. Just imagine swimming Kudzu, or for those of you unfamiliar with Kudzu, swiming, water hyacinth that doesn't die when it gets cold. THAT'S what Asian carp are in American rivers! :(

The following are going so far: Stella de Oro - I have so many clumps of it around the garden that I don't need so many. I've placed Stella on the Trade forum as a freebie for postage. I just can't toss them. No heart. BANNED IN BOSTON- doesn't like it hear. It is a large clump but for some reason doesn't do good here. FILLED TO OVERFLOWING - poor performer here so it has to go and the fans are tiny so why take up space. OPEN DOOR - another poor performer here. Low bud count compared to other ones I have of Karol's. MESOZOIC MUNCH,CANYON COLORS,CAVE CREEK CANYON - this year the growth was pitiful but the blooms are great. Each year it does this to me but this year, I'm sticking to getting rid of them. AUTUMN WOOD - beautiful bloom but low bud count here and this year it needs to go. DAVID KIRCHHOFF - each year it looks like it will do good and the following year it is back to looking bad. Time to go. I'm on the fence with DARLA ANITA. I love the blooms when she behaves but this year...yuck. The other one is STARTLE. I'm not into teeth on daylilies (no offense to anyone who hybridizes for that particular form) The following are clumps were I have 2 of the same so one of them will go. What is heartening is the way the community has come together with literally thousands of people opening their homes to strangers who need a place to stay, with google opening a site specifically for people to post if they are looking for someone or if they have information on someone. So fortunate too that being near the end of the race, there was a lot of medical staff on hand ready to treat collapsed runners who came to the aid of the injured. Also fortunate that Boston has many excellent hospitals to take in the large number of injured people. They believe a lot of this has helped limit the number of people who have died as a result. What is also good, if true, is that the police have disarmed a bomb so they have it for understanding how it was made which may be a signature for the bomber, and they have a shot at any DNA and/or fingerprint evidence left behind. I think that the micro perspective makes it seem that violence is becoming more prevalent as: a) acts of terrorism are designed to spread fear even further than death or injury and it works; b) the media brings all these events of horror inside our doorsteps and into our living rooms; and c) these events of violence are visited directly on the US. We spent the last century fighting wars on other people's land...Europe, Asia, the Mideast...or we were witnesses to violence in other people's lands such as the UK or Israel, Lebanon, Syria, etc. When it hits close to home, it not only makes the horror of it seem so much more real when it's people we know or places we've been, but it has the added effect of shaking our fundamental sense of safety in our own community. However, history demonstrates the opposite. Globally, violence has declined dramatically over the last few centuries and we are living more peacefully now than before. This is really good news for human kind and very hopeful. The benefits of education, growth in governments that respect human rights and economic well being are extremely powerful forces against violence. Same here. I had quite a few that didn't send up scapes, last year and this year. Last year I just figured it was because they were new, but I thought this year they would. Nope. And some that flowered last year didn't this year. And my nice sized clump of Schnickel Fritz, one scape out of about twenty fans. So, you're not alone.

BANNED IN BOSTON has been here for at least 5 years and has been a very poor performer. It is on my hit list and will be leaving here this fall. Either it will be sold cheaply,maybe a club member will want it or else it will go on the compost pile. It did bloom this year ( but not last) but every time it has bloomed here, it has been down in the foliage. It must perform well somewhere, but it isn't here!

Banned in Boston was in a discussion on another forum a number of years ago, it sulks if it gets fertilized. I have kept that in mind and give it very little if any fertilizer, it blooms quite happily here.

It bloomed wonderfully here again this year.....always has here. I only have one problem with it.....the foliage. It is very grass like and browns out as soon as the blooms start. It's bloom is very beautiful IMHO....I have to admit it, I keep it tucked in the second row....LOL

I've had quite a few that haven't put up scapes this year, including some that have been around for a few years. I moved BIB early this spring, and she sure didn't seem to appreciate it. I've had one measly, blotchy bloom so far.

Interesting about the fertilizer thing. All my daylilies were fertilized with either compost or pellets thrown on top of the beds this spring.
Rick: do you fertilize BIB and still get blooms?

I haven't rechecked my list but I think BANNED IN BOSTON is the only one that has been planted here for more than a year which hasn't scaped that is why it drew my attention.

The fertilizer issue was discussed on the e-mail robin about 5-6 years ago too. I have always been careful not to overdo it with this plant. Does it grow low in the foliage for you? It did bloom here, and blooms were much as your picture, but I simply cannot stand blooms that are down in the foliage. I think I will give it away to a club member. Maybe it will do better for them. It is leaving here regardless. There just isn't room for fussy plants here.

Yes, Natanya.....BIB has some light diamond dusting.

Julia.....the only fertilizing I do is with old composted horse manure. Maybe that is why the foliage is so bad...LOL But no chemicals here.
