Japanese Fern Tree

Mine is dying, and I cannot figure out why.. It was hurt by the freeze, and the outer tips of the branches turned brown.

During the drought, it dropped many leaves. Once the rains started, it grew some new leaves, but since then die-back has gotten worse.

Now there are *no* green leaves, and very few brown ones left. The branches and trunk still scratch green, but the problem is progressing.

No insects are seen, no injury to the trunk, other trees in the general area are fine.

Any ideas?

Have you scratched around in the mulch near the trunk or topsoil where any roots may be? Could be a fungal infection that started when tissue/bark cracked in a freeze, and then the drought progressively weakened the plant further.

My Dicksonia spp. leaves turned brown with the freeze, but I left them to help protect the tree, and eventually cut them off. Are there any grass or other roots invading the trunk? If so, carefully cut them off, and keep them off.
These ferns are heavy feeders, but I do not use chemical fertilizers. I use worm castings, washed seaweed (from the beach), composted manure, or manure 'tea' (either the water the composted manure has been sitting in, or the manure itself), or 'kitchen and leaf' compost as a dressing, with mulch. After several years, the mulch breaks down, adding to the compost. Don't let the mulch or compost touch the 'bark'. My tree fern is back and looks healthy...hope your's will be, soon. I don't know if these ferns have any diseases here, but it pays to be on the lookout.

Hi Nancy, My vote would be for a japanese fern tree. I love mine. I have one in moderate to full shade, one in part sun and the other in full sun. They all do great! Two winters ago they partially defoliated from cold. Seems you are warmer though than here. The cold hasn't been a problem any other winter, but that winter was long and we had several nights to 27 degrees. I love their look and they are care free. Drought tolerant once established, and require nothing from me. Mine are about 1-15 feet and have stabilized there. They may get taller in warmer areas. Anna

teka2rjleffel, Japanese Fern trees are pretty common, so you should be able to find them at most nurseries that sell trees. If not you can try a place out in Loxahatchee called D'Asign Source Botanicals. Don't know how big your budget is, but if you are looking for a really cool looking tree you might consider Caesalpinia ferrea (Leopard Tree), Bulnesia arborea (Vera wood tree) or Guaiacum sanctum (Lignum Vitae). All have the lace like leafs you like and all can be pruned to keep them small. Another really cool tree, but more of a statement then a shade tree is Brya ebenus (Jamaican rain tree). This is one of my favorites. It is overwhelming how many cool tropical trees there are.

Hi When i bought he seeds they were sold to me as Schizolobium amazonicum. "Yellow Jacaranda" According to Kew there is only one species parahyba though they listed amazonicum as a synonym. I like the Indian name Guaparuru lol It is a member of the caesalpinioidea. Started in 03 and has been very abused due to storms ,frosts squirrels weed whips so most of the growth has happened in the last 3 years lol has never flowered last was Wilma who took the crown out resulting in the present shape it is VERY wind sensitive has broke in as little as 30 MPH and is deciduous in a very odd way throws off entire limbs rather than leaves . makes loud cracking noises and throws the limbs 20 feet lol Also has some other odd properties ,a resin that capture lizards and seems to repel insects though i found no info on being carniverous. If interested ,had a long talk on the botany forum about it.. It has not become a "bird catcher " in spite of its size .Hard to check on the resin due to its size now. Anyway here is some pix on the trunk and branches as you can see it's above the mainpower lines so need a method to prevent a disaster . It is now starting buttress roots ,suspect serious growth is going to start now . Kew listed it as 60 METERS lol. Not in my yard, would like to keep it if possible.. I'll prune back the dying branches tonight after it cools off (haha). There is invasion by grasses near the tree. I'll also remove that and fertilize.

I'd hate to lose the tree. They are so pretty and lush when in good health. I saw some today at Tropical Ranch, and although losing leaves, they looked 90% better than mine does.

I'll carefully inspect the lower trunk after I pull back the grass stems. We do not weedwack near it. I hand-pull weeds/grasses near trunks. My chickens kick the mulch away, and the grass invades rapidly.

Japanese Fern Tree isn't really a tree fern. It called that because the foliage resembles ferns.

Mine is shedding leaves right now also, but it does have new foliage. I think I let it get a little too dry. I am growing it in a large container in my patio.
