Where can I buy a wide variety of vegetable seedlings?

I would like a bigger variety in my vegetable garden, I want something different than what I usually buy at the local hardware & garden stores. I am interested in growing more heirloom varieties. Nothing in particular...i just want more diversity. I live in the Atlanta area.

Any good locations around GA?

Neohippie, that is a GREAT book! I got it back in the 90s and still enjoy it. Carol Depp has such an enjoyable writing style. I've been meaning to do a write up for a Gardenweb posting on Carol's latest book. It too is a real winner. The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-Reliance in Uncertain Times. Someone sent us a couple copies as a gift. We kept one, passed the other on, and ... bought a couple more for gifts! *The Resilient Gardener* deals with the basic idea of gardening in such a way as to be ready for surprises, such as personal, health of job related crisis or even abrupt changes of climate. In it Carol also passes on much accumulated wisdom on how to garden with less effort. She discusses all kinds of techniques and tools. If anyone has a friend or loved one who suffers from celiac disease, this book is a MUST HAVE. Carol has tailored almost everything in it, including recipes, to a wheat free diet. It's incredible. Okay, I can't do the book justice without doing more thoughtful work. But I assure you, if you appreciate *Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties* you'll probably love this one as well. I've been gardening over 40 years. A couple decades ago I kind of got saturated on gardening books and catalogs (yes, it can happen). So I don't buy very many books and usually take catalogs to work for my co-workers to look at. But I would not be without *The Resilient Gardener*. Windward gardening can be fun but challenging!! Fukuda has its own small seed store in Honolulu. The seeds are great and about half price at the store and they are very nice. Koolau Farmers in Kaneohe and Kailua both have UH seeds and Fukuda. UH has a great website with good seeds for the area. Just look up CTAHR on google and you can order them very cheaply with no postage. Most seed catalog seeds do not do well here (I have learned the hard way!). Southern Exposure is one good one that is aimed at the mid-atlantic but much of the weather is similar (High humid hot summers and variable rain). Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Violet, I don't think I really answered your original question. Here is what does really well without a lot of work for me: Illini blackberries (Miller Nurseries, NY) Supermale Asparagus (Miller Nurseries, NY) Sour Cherry tree (Miller, either a Meteor or a North Star, redskin, yellow flesh). No spraying whatsoever. Various strawberries from various sources. Kwintus Pole Beans (Park Seed Co., grown on cattle panel hoop frame) Cimarron lettuce, romaine type from Jung and Pinetree Various potatoes, Yukon Gold is the favorite (from various sources including small potatoes I save and sprouted ones from the pantry) Beauregard sweet potato (usually from Dorothy's Digs, local greenhouse close by) Bodacious Sweet Corn (Hummerts in Springfield) also Peaches and Cream and Candy Corn....Bodacious is the favorite) Various tomatoes, mostly heirloom varieties from various online sources....favorite last year was Granny Cantrell (sorry ceresone, Anias Noir got more disease for me) All peppers do well: Parks Thickset, Cal. Wonder, Sweet and Hot banana, cayenne, Anaheim and Ancho, Valencia Bloomsdale Long-Standing spinach Onions: Only Candy and Super Star (from seed, Harris Seed Co. NY) am trying a sample of plants to see how they compare to seed started. They are the only onions that have ever made any size for me...day neutral type. Hope this helps...as you will see, I don't grow exotics...or haven't before.

Since many responses were that people grow from seed, I opted to try a winter sowing method I learned on BHG website. I just planted tomatoes, lettuce & peas last week. I am hoping for the best. Last year I had (2) accidental tomato plants sprout. But they never did very well. I hope that these seeds will fair much better. Maureen- I would gladly accept seeds at our get-together if you have extra. I was planning on trying out melons this year. Heirloom tomatoes you say? How do they taste? Can you can them?
