how would a never before grown melon appear in my garden?

I had some unidentified vines growing in my vegetable garden this year which I left alone for fun. One turned out to be cantelope, which I've never planted but figured maybe a seed from one I composted took root. A mystery fruit appeared that didn't look like anything I had ever grown or eaten. Looking it up online it appears to be a charantais melon. I haven't opened one up yet but it does smell like a melon. Could this have been transplanted by birds or could it be a hybrid of a cantelope? I've never grown melons so would love to hear from anyone who knows their melons. Thanks
