Shade trees revisited - cherry tree disease

Tricia

I'm narrowing down my selection. I am going to go with a deodora cedar or california Christmas tree(?) for the slightly off center main focal point. I am going to replace the fig on the right side of the yard with one of the red maple varieties, and may repeat a red maple towards the rear left of the front yard.

My question is, I also have a mature choke cherry tree which loses all its leaves about every other year. It seems to get some kind of fungus when we have as much rain as we had this year. Is there anyting to be done to prevent this? If not I may have to remove this tree and replace it with something else as a shade tree with no leaves is about as useful as that fig tree that doesn't taste good.
