What kind of ornamental grass is in Frankenmuth?

My family and I just got back from a couple days in Frankenmuth, MI. I was really impressed with the gardens all through town. I'd like to plant the same kind of ornamental grass in my garden at home, but I don't know what it is. It looks like something in Fine Gardening this month called purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'), but if it is, it would have to be grown as an annual. I was hoping it was hardy. Does anyone know what the grass is growing down the main street of Frankenmuth?

Rob, I'm betting it is an annual grass. Glad you enjoyed Frankenmuth...such a successful small town and yes, their gardens through the town are beautiful.

Yeah, I just found a bunch of it at Home Depot. It's purple fountain grass. At seven something a plant, I don't think I'll be putting it in as an annual. Does anyone know if it's easy to grow from seed?

1 to 1 1/2 inch wide leaves, fat stalks and corn like but it was so thick all the way to the top you could not see through it. I will try and take a picture of it this week and post it.

You can never be absolutely sure what you are getting from a box store as they often decline to provide accurate labels. It is one of the horizontal banded forms of Miscanthus sinensis as you were thinking but exactly which one remains to be seen....... 'Zebrinus' - 7-8' 'Little Zebra' - 3-4' 'Gold Bar' - 3-5' 'Gold Breeze' - 5-7' 'Super Stripe' - 4' 'Hinjo' - 5-6' 'Strictus' - 6-8' With the label "breeze grass", I'd lean more towards 'Gold Breeze' than the other cultivars but that's just a guess.
