Moving to Georgia

Next year our daughter & husband are moving to Chandler Co.in Georgia. They want my husband & I also to move somewhere not too far from them. We are looking for an area where we can purchase a farm where I can continue to raise my worms (I have 50 beds at this time) for bait and gardeners, to grow vegetables & fruit trees, my husband wants to raise animals (chickens,rabbits & maybe goats)to sell as meat & eggs. We want a rural small community not too far from a big town and lots of fishing sites.

I am hoping some of you can tell me about your area, weather etc.

Thank You for any info you help us with.

Can you check the spelling of that county, MK? Can't find it on my atlas.
Or even a town name?

You can google for the 'Georgia Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin' web site to get an idea of farmland parcels for sale. It isn't all encompassing, as it doesn't include sales through realtors, but it's a start and covers the entire state.

In the SouthWestern states, most golf courses nowadays are watered with "reclaimed" water. (So is the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden.) This is a very very good way to preserve growing things, in days when water is tight. I might mention that at 10:45 a.m., it was 88 degrees in the shade of an old avocado tree, at the bottom of my garden On the back patio, it was 83 degrees. On top of the roof where windspeed is measured, it's already 88 degrees. This is pretty discouraging, for the 15th of November, with no rain in sight. You can also submerge the ferns in a large bucket or the like (if possible) and the ants will leave after several hours. Very likely you have Platycerium bifurcatum. It is fully cold hardy to USDA zone 9b, marginal in 9a if sited well, and dead as a door nail in 8b during a cold snap. They can withstand the mid twenties for a short period. I overwintered mine outside last year and we dropped to 25 several times. They lost quite a few fronds, but this spring they rebounded. Tom

I am a Georgia transplant myself and liked it here. The winters are short and growing season is long, compared to New Englan. But there is one draw back: The natural soil here is not that good. It is mostly red clay. So if you want to start a garden patch or plant trees you have to do quite a lot of work to amend the soil. I did it mostly by adding lots of top soil, leaves, compost, manure, leaves and also some double digging and screening to get rid of the small stones. I also hunt alot of worms from here and there and let them loose in my garden. They mostly are suffering from malnutrition (LOL) but after being introduced to my garden they gain some weight. In Connecticut the soil was excellent, dark black and worms were plenty and fat(grin)

Move to Ft. Myers in 2005. You'll want to do some research before you plant any fruit trees. Lots of my neighbors planted orange & grapefruit trees when they first arrived and now complain about having to treat them to keep away sooty mold and all types of fungus that damage the trees. Then there's the raccoons and rats they attract to your home. If the tree is too close to your house, you'll end up with fruit rats in your attic. In addition, many homeowner associations down here prohibit planting any type of fruit trees because they're such a nuisance. Very susceptible to going down in hurricane winds because they are top heavy. Finally, I have to say that I've never tasted fruit off someone's back yard tree that I thought tasted very good down here. Good fruit trees take work. Some day i'll relate the story about my $100 cherry tomato plant.

There's lots of different types of regions in this state. Coastal, mountainous, agricultural. The climate does differ and so does the way of life. I live in the atlanta metro area and all throughout my area are farms with horses and chickens and vegetables and fruit trees. Goats are pretty common too. So I think you can do that just about anywhere here. Compared to california, I'm sure you will find the cost of living here dirt cheap in comparison. What kind of atmosphere do you desire the most?

Yes I misspelled Candler.
Right now we manage a peach orchard in the desert area, no green lawns, lots of dust and in the 100's most of the summer & winters are fairly mild but can get down in the 20's in the winter. My husband doesn't like cold. We are orginally from Indiana and it's too cold in the winter.
The areas with mild winters would be great. I would like areas where I can get plenty of good animal manure and food wastes to feed my worms. If anyone knows of any fishing bait distributors I need that info.
Any info I can get will give me a good idea of where to start looking for farms.

I would say somewhere along the southeastern coastal part of the state. That's going to be the mildest winter you are looking for and there is a lot of fishing there as an industry, particularly near the SC border, so that might be the place to focus in on.

You may want to check the following web site. I found it on another garden web forum (homesteading, I think). It lists farms/land for sale all over the US and always has lots of items for Georgia. Also, they show real estate company listings.
