staghorn ferns

need help please. just moved to georgia from florida and i brought a few medium sized staghorn ferns with me. they are attached to a large piece of tree truck that can be moved but are outside. will they winter over in zone 8 or will i loose them to the frost and cold this winter? also if i move them inside i want to spray for ants, will this harm or kill the ferns at all. thanks vicki

I wouldnt take a chance on the frost. And as far as spraying for the ants, NO !!.Just before you bring it in give it a lot of water and that will run the ants out. Otherwise you may have a few ants to deal with.A few ants or save your staghorn ??

I have many huge staghorn ferns for sale. Each one is at least 45 years old or older. Please take a look at these beauties. I live in Miami and trying to sell locally. I don’t know where your idea comes from; we spray plants with oils all the time with no ill effects. Neem oil, horticultural oil, and various vegetable and herb oils are routinely used on all types of houseplants. Cooking oils and other natural fats would not be very different. If someone were sugesting a heavy lubrication oil like 10-40 that would be a different question. Is that what you cook with Gardengal?

You can also submerge the ferns in a large bucket or the like (if possible) and the ants will leave after several hours. Very likely you have Platycerium bifurcatum. It is fully cold hardy to USDA zone 9b, marginal in 9a if sited well, and dead as a door nail in 8b during a cold snap. They can withstand the mid twenties for a short period. I overwintered mine outside last year and we dropped to 25 several times. They lost quite a few fronds, but this spring they rebounded.
