So lovely! I got Ida's Magic this year, but no blooms. I love yours. They are all beautiful, although Watership Down is outstanding I think.

Hey Joe the Cactus, you're a scream, mate! I dig your sense of humour. My head-count... gee, I dunno I ran out of fingers and toes a long time ago! talking about heads though, don't lose yours mate, remember John did! Where's your plant sitting? Part of the problem may be simply that they're not getting enough direct sunlight to green up and grow more, especially indoors during winter. Light green with dark veins usually means chlorosis (iron defficiency, kind of a plant version of being aenemic). If you can find an iron fertilizer like Ironite or straight ferrous sulfate, give it a light application. I'd also switch to Miracid but use half the recommended strength, and don't fertilize every time you water; gardenia roots are delicate and young plants are especially sensastive to too much fertilizer. You might also try flushing the pot by watering until the water runs freely out of the bottom of the pot once every few weeks, to prevent fertilizer or salts in the water from building up. Finally, light green leaves may also mean spider mites, look under the leaves for tiny webs where the leaves join the branches, hose 'em off frequently if they're present. If all else fails, you may still have to call in the reverend/rabbi/imam, but we'll keep our fingers crossed! Jim

If you refer to them as Lilium Tigrinum everyone will immediately know what you're dealing with... as opposed to the "ditch lilies" many find pesky. Your tigers are the easiest of the lilies to grow and have great success with. They just never seem to disappoint especially if you've got a sunny spot with good drainage. Personally, I would not soak them - just crumble the soil away from the bulbs by hand to separate them out then plant the bulbs at least 6" deep... the top of the bulb below where the stem starts should be the 6" beneath the soil line. They're tough, you can't hurt them even if you accidently break off a stalk which by now should be starting to yellow out. Water them in and forget them till they emerge in the spring. Check out the Lilies Forum, too. Aside from getting the lilies into the ground - I'd probably spend this time preparing any future planting beds and making a few elimentary plans before doing any planting. There are all kinds of ground covers - from Uva-Ursi (bearberry) or Sedums like Dragon's Blood to creeping Junipers, etc. What do you like and what do you want to look at from what vantage point; and are you planting things for your own pleasure or for curb appeal? Think you'll be happier with any results by working out a basic plan.

To me I tend to go for total plant volume over strictly counting eyes, but it sort of depends on the particular plant. In this case two larger eyes would be the winner to me over any number of small eyes. Sometimes when a hosta is stressed out it will overcompensate and put out a ton of eyes. On a large hosta like Blue Hawaii it should be multiplying fairly slowly, with the eyes getting fatter and fatter before putting out new ones. If one has a bunch of eyes I bet there is something going on with the crown, either some kind of rot or some other kind of damage that happened to it along the way. In time the larger eyes will multiply naturally on their own over a bunch of small ones and will often be the larger and more robust and mature looking plant quicker than a bunch of small ones. I think of it as quality vs quantity. On the other hand if it is a fast multiplying plant then more eyes would be the way to go over a couple larger ones as they will catch up to the larger ones quick enough. The other question I get asked sometimes is if you have nothing but single eye plants and some are flowering but others are not, which one do you pick? The flowering one will appear to put lots of energy into the flower and won't send up any more leaves from that eye but the one that isn't flowering will continue to flush out new leaves so may seem the better choice. To me, however, I would take the flowering one because after it flowers it will work on setting new dormant buds which become more eyes next year. It won't do much this summer but next year it will be larger than the singles that didn't flower this year. Just my take on it :) Chris

Hey Rick!! You gave me a great "purple" fix with your Watership Down and Druid's Chant! Those are very nice purples, and I love the form of Watership Down, also. Are they colorfast in the sun.......very hot sun, if you have that like we do in N.Central Texas?? We have had too many days to even count of 100+ days. I guess it was a good thing that all my DL's have already bloomed, except for some rebloom coming. It's frying the DL's that are trying to bloom that are left.....all except Joan Senior and my oldie, but ultimate favorite big, bright, ruffly, wonderfully fragrant lemon yellow, Imperial Lemon. Both of those look the same at 9pm after 107 degree days in full sun as they did at 0700 in the morning. They really amaze me at how they hold up to these temps and humidity that we have. Jan G.

Very very nice! I like WATERSHIP DOWN, and am very jealous of your DRUIDS CHANT as mine tends to look like yuck until it is half way through the season, and THEN it reminds me of why I wanted it in the first place. Yours is lovely!

I am totally awed by these dark daylilies and no splotches. Congratulations. Their colors are amazing. My Ida's Magic is pale and washed out. I got it in a trade - maybe it is a TC. WD is by far my favorite.

I'm glad you guy's are enjoying these....:) I can't attest for Watership down as far as full hot sun goes....sorry....I have it in a neat protected, dappled shade, ideal location...LOL AS far as the other's, they get it and all that Mother Nature deals them. Poor Ida's Magic gets it from sun-up to sun-down, I thnk she handles it real well...what can ya say...except that it's a Munson...LOL Course Watership Down is a Moldovan, and that says a lot too!
Oh well, gotta go shovel some more pocono river stone...so much for this break...:0)

Nice show, Rick! Watership Down and Spacecoast Spice Girl are my favorites of these. Is there a daylily called Making Eye Contact? If not, I think that would be a great name for an eyed one.

Hmmmmm Now I seem to remember somevery nice Daylily Gal that hooked me up on that one......Hmmmm now what was her name???? geeeezzzzzz I think she has some AKA's here....LOL Course I usually refer to her as GG or CC or Gonegardening.....hehehe Thank you for such an Awesome Daylily!
