Painting an Apple Gouurd - Pics needed

Does anyone have or know of a site with pics posted of painted apple gourds. I have a perfect apple gourd that I want to paint for my sister, who is a teacher, as an apple. Just a plain, red apple, with highlights and the little brown splatter marks that are on a real apple. I want to give it to her as an ornament for her classroom. I need to know how to make it look like that and how to make the leaves (cloth and wire, etc.) Thanks for any info.

Hi - Do a google search, under IMAGES, for "apple gourds" and up will pop lots of pics of apple gourds and quite a few that are painted. When I painted an apple gourd I just used "apple red" and then overlayed that with a couple of other shades of red. For the leaves - you can just paint them on, make out of clay and attach, or even use silk leaves. I have seen apple gourds done all three ways.

Wish I had a tutorial to share with you but I don't. I just muddled along and mine turned out wonderfully!

I forgot to take a photo of the one I did! I made it into a bird house and painted a green worm on it! I have one right now that I plan to cut the top of and make a hinged lid and fill it with candy for my granddaughter to give to her teacher for Christmas.

Do share a photo when you get yours done and tell us how you did it - colors used etc.

Thanks Rita, I will do that. Thanks for the idea on how to get pics. Right now I just painted it one coat of 'Real Red' by Apple Barrel paint. My mom suggested that I take a few of the leaves off some of her silk flowers that she usually throws out after a year or so and use them for the apple leaves. As they are on wire they will be easy to attach to the stem.

Hi Konrad, Well no, it is because it is one of the first videos we did and we did not know about lighting. The paint is really a light red (I will dilute it less in the future) and really needed to be a shade darker. Also we filmed in the brightest sun at an angle were we got maximum light. We could have used a gold reflector to soften the light, but nooooo. I am sure you read the comments we have also received quite a few e-mails questioning my eyesight. I stand corrected, Glenn. I've got a lot of that (your mulching is still much neater than mine, though). In my experience, that sort of grass right near the trunk (as opposed to rooted in the mulch) is really hard to get rid of by hand pulling b/c the roots rarely come out of my heavy red clay, even when it is moist. I'd probably hand pull a few times and, if it keeps coming back, wrap the trunk in a protective layer (aluminum foil or tree wrap?), cut the grass with scissors, and dab some diluted roundup on the cut ends with a Q-tip. I use cardboard further away from the trunk, but I don't think it would be a good idea or that effective to put the cardboard that close to the trunk.

ETA clarity to my post. What color is the last picture? That looks good. I think if you live with it like was suggested above you will like it. Accessorizing with some amazing colors for that wall color will help to pull the room together. I have a bathroom that I used BM Bunny Gray in and it looks like a baby blue. I have white, gray, and marble in that room. I have another room with carrara marble in, and I used BM Horizon, but that has a bit of green in it. The Horizon is very pale and might seem white to some. But the warming of the blue goes with my walnut. The Bunny Gray is a bit richer and looks fine with my whites, blacks, and marble. I tried many many samples for the marble in this room and settled on the Bunny Gray. No pink or green that I see in the Bunny Gray. This is a deco that I found and based my BM Bunny Blue room colors on. The lichen might have faded but the reddish in the mussles go well with the blue. We lived in Ukla (I may be spelling it wrong) but it was a little town outside Brussels. We didn't want to live in Waterloo where most x-pats live because we wanted to improve our French and we loved that little area. We spent Sat morning walking to the little shops for first Chocolat!! Then breads, then flowers, then meats, etc. etc. It was glorious! Looking forward to seeing more pictures!

Sounds good to me!

Love the idea of recycling those leaves too - and you might want to grab some of the flowers she tosses out - you never know when they will come in handy - esp if you make one gourd into a panorama - divvy up those flowers into different colors and you are ready for whatever comes along! I am heading down to the basement to snag some gourds to work on - I will be checking out the apples and will let you know what happens with different colors! Wish I had some of those leaves ... I guess a trip to the craft store is in order.
