But your general rule of thumb for flowering bonsai is really helpful. It is a relatively new subject for me. Thanks again. FYI - Bonsai Today - issue #86 has specific information (3 pages of sketches and text) about shaping Japanese quince and general care info. No mention of waiting until after bloom to repot. - That may just mean it is basic info every bonsai fancier should already know. Shame on me! Hi Nick, It's called apical dominance and some trees have more of it like Firs that grow up straight,than others that weep. I'd keep pruning it to the height desired and yes,around late Winter/early Spring. Brady

I picked some from the ornamental/flowering quince in my neighborhood. I plan to try slicing them and cooking in sugar. I'll let you know how it turns out. I've made jelly from them. They have a unique flavor. The jar of quince jelly I bought at the grocery store in france just tasted like apple jelly to me, not at all like my homemade jelly. Of course, they used pectin and I didn't so their flavor would have been more dilute.

I have a quince that is about 6 years old. I started it from a cutting and it finally bloomed this year but the blooms were all at the bottom of the shrub or close to the inner branch. It is getting leggy and I would like to prune it but I'm not sure how. Some sites say to cut off the oldest 3rd of the branches to rejuvenate it, but there is only about two large branches and I don't want to cut the center out.
