seeding fountain grasses.....

Is there ANY kind of (attractive) fountain grass for which I CAN get seed, and that will grow true to the parent? I have Hamelin, an dlove it, but want something that will seed and spread. Any suggestions (especially those with pictures!) will be MUCH appreciated!

Both species Fountain Grass and P.a.'Moudry' will come true from seed.

btw, you can easily propagate the 'named cultivar' by division in the spring ~ making many in a short amount of time

Purple fountain grass (Pennisetum Rubrum) does not set viable seed. You'll need to buy actively growing plants or produce by division from larger plants.

Thanks Donn, That's great news. I was hoping I could sow them now, and didn't miss the deadline. As far as the variety of grasses, I am not sure. I recieved them in a trade last fall on the exchange forum. I have seen fountain grass growing here. I see it in the summer, see the winter show and then see it return each year, as long as there aren't a lot of species it should be hardy here. Thanks again for the input, I'm gonna get to sowin my seeds. P.S. How soon should I expect them to germinate? And with ideal conditions (water,sun, fertilizer (later)) how much growth should I expect this season. Thanks again

I agree with Donn, deadheading blooms rarely helps promote grasses to bloom more. Cutting back foliage, however, does promote tillering and new basal growth. My advise though with those beautiful purple fountain grasses is to leave them on their own and let them bloom like crazy in the warm weather.
