fountain,zebra and japanese grass seeds . . . plant now?

Hi, I didn't get these sown this winter as I had planned. I was wondering if I can still plant the seeds? Do they need to go thru a winter in order to germinate? If they do will the seeds still be ok for next winters sowing? Thanks to any and all.

Yes. You can sow them now.
No. They don't need cold stratification.

Fountain grass may come true from seed. Zebra Grass probably won't come true from seed.

Japanese Grass? Is that Japanese Silver Grass (Miscanthus), Japanese Blood Grass (Imperata) or Japanese Stint Grass (Microstegium)? The first and second probably won't come true from seed, and the third probably will, but it's a nasty invasive annual, and you wouldn't want to grow it.

Fountain Grass may, or may not be hardy in your zone.

Thanks Donn, That's great news. I was hoping I could sow them now, and didn't miss the deadline. As far as the variety of grasses, I am not sure. I recieved them in a trade last fall on the exchange forum. I have seen fountain grass growing here. I see it in the summer, see the winter show and then see it return each year, as long as there aren't a lot of species it should be hardy here. Thanks again for the input, I'm gonna get to sowin my seeds.

P.S. How soon should I expect them to germinate? And with ideal conditions (water,sun, fertilizer (later)) how much growth should I expect this season. Thanks again

even if they did grow, they might not look like the parent. many cultivated types are not exactly natural, and in fact many breeders do not want viable seeds so the plants do not spread and become a nuisance

I think you're safe to put them in the ground now. You've probably got plenty of time for them to establish before your winter weather comes in earnest.

Grass seed put down at this time in northern zones will not come to anything....its too cold. Grass seed needs temperatures that will cause the seed to sprout. In zone 6....and down....grass seed is best planted before mid September to ensure something comes up. Not to say you shouldn't put grass seed down when the temperatures drop. Grass seed will sit, awaiting the soil temperatures to warm up and cause it to sprout. Air temperatures has nothing to do with how a seed can work....the seed is in the ground....so its the ground soil temperature that matters. Otherwise, seed could be seen to pop up when a warm spell arrives in January. Of course, this doesn't happen...the soil is too cold. The advantage of putting seed down now is the seed will be waiting for the first sign of soil temperatures rising and will be that much more ahead of those waiting til the good weather arrives. Snow melt will aid in giving to the ground that needed moisture to help hasten the seed.

if you are going to plant it now, you would need to grow it indoors under light. Otherwise its not going to survive the winter if you leave it outside.
