Trying to grow organic pumpkins

Hello,

I live in Central Florida in the Tampa Bay area. Depending on who you consult, this is either a zone 9 or 10. I have tried at two different houses to grow pumpkins.

Both times, the plants have thrived, spreading out halfway across my yard, setting out blooms, etc, but right when the fruit starts to develop, some kind of pest eats the plant down to nothing.

What kind of pest would be present in both locations and what can I do to successfully grow a pumpkin here? Someone told me it doesn't get cold enough in Florida for them to develop properly. I just want to grow one pumpkin for my daughter to carve a jack o lantern out of. Any help/advice would be appreciated.
