baby watermelon dying

i am a city dweller and i can only farm on weekends. I have one watermelon plant that had 2 fruits. They were growing healthily and then when they reached the size of a softball, they all blackened and had to be removed. When I touched them, I realized all they feel light & empty and the juice inside seems to have gone as there are several holes underneath the melons (i have them on trellis). I read that pickleworms are not that common for watermelons as they have thick skin. I am not able to check my melons everyday. Is the problem pickleworm?
