Hey, Hey, daylily adventures today

Well, I just got back from a fabulous open garden here on Long Island (Ronkonkoma) of one of our local Long Island Daylily Society Members. I shot all the 75 pictures in my camera so you know I will be posting lots of shots of this garden. Have to eat some lunch and water all my potted plants and will put up the tour later this afternoon.

It is ungodly hot here today and yesterday so I only did one garden tour, it was enough for me and I was there for hours as there was so much to see.

There is another open garden here on Long Island both today and tomorrow and I was originally thinking of hitting that one today also as it was on the way home (took my directions with me). But just too much and too hot plus there would be no pictures because I had shot them all already.

I might go tomorrow or not. Depends. Will see how I feel about it tonight and tomorrow morning.

Oh good, can't wait to see the pictures.I know they will be beautiful. Its very hot and humos here,too,and suppose to be even hotter tomorrow.I can only stand about 15 minutes of it,then have to get in out of it.You should bring plenty of water to drink on your tours.

I'm looking forward to the tour too - from inside my air conditioned home. It was already 86 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Can't stay inside as much as I want though because I have to water every day.....Please be gentle if you can about how many pictures you load per posting (for those of us with clunky computers whose "want to" can't keep up with our machines "can do").

OK, I'm back shortly. Mark, Paph schoseri is one I couldn't get for blood nor money, unless I paid a lot of money, when I was collecting species. I maybe saw it available twice, for wads of cash. This guy is little, but way stupid cheap, and I figured why not. I don't think it's a jacked-up hard to bloom thing (and I've dealt with those). Too much on-topic. Joaquin is a fantastic kitten-child and makes me very happy. The bitey thing is going away as he grows up. He retains his spotted gorgeousness. He's ever so smart (I refrained from swearing here so as not to get tossed off the forum, but really...). And not to be too off-topic on-topic (that kid of mine), what are we reading lately? I could start a new thread, but I don't wanna. I'm reading 'Tieta' by Jorge Almado, and not being thrilled by it-a bit ponderous and too many interruptions by the author to drop in his comments...I don't know. I'm liking the story but not the telling, and it may just be the translation. I had a lovely break in the tale with the 'Brokeback Mountain' short story (borrowed for a friend from a friend, and of course I read it first). A dandy story. You should probably all know that I get drunk and loaded (some of you may know what the loaded part is about, aside from the drunk) before these little sillinesses get written out. Chemicals happen. It's not always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes it's pretty good. At any rate... I'm off. Love you kids. -O-

Oh my, my. Its absolutely beautiful there. I can't immagine how she can manage to mantain all that property and those display beds. Those beds in the second and third pictures especially are so beautiful. Nice doggies also. In case anyone wants to know, this is the place that sent me the catalog that has no pictures, only descriptions, that sells the Dale Thomas intros that I bought sight unseen this spring. Diane told me that she had not seen the 2009 Thomas intros bloom yet either so we were both looking forward to seeing them blom. Thank you so much for posting pics of your tour. You must tell us what you brought home!

After I plant all of the daylilies I have ordered, I really do need to stay off of the auction. I have gotten rid of quite a few daylilies, and I have several more that are marked to go. I won a lily Phil Korth had on the auction, but it was one of Karol's, not his. The pond will be about four times the size it is now. The current pond will actually be about triple the size it is, and it will connect to a channel that is about seven feet long and three feet deep to another pond a little bigger (and definitely deeper) that the current pond. The heat has been the hold up. You can only stand to be out for a little while in the heat. I will probably work on it a little while tomorrow. Hopefully the rose garden will turn out well. I have roses coming from Heirloom, Vintage, and one, Reine des Violettes, from Antique Rose Emporium. It at least is a two gallon size. A couple of the Vintage ones are one gallon, but all of the others are bands. I am looking forward to planting these roses. My others have done quite well this summer. Year before last, I planted two Wild Blue Yonder roses and I was originally not happpy with them. This year I love them. They are a pretty color, and the scent is sensational. And speaking of scents, I was in the garden yesterday, and suddenly smelled a fantastic fragrance. It was the rose Lady Like. There were about ten blooms on it, and it carried to the path and drew me to it. I cut a couple for the desk vase. The fragrance is as important as the color and shape to me, so I am very happy with the roses. The bench is intended for the butterfly garden, but it will be for both since the projected site is very close to the rose garden. Google "butterfly bench" and you will probably see it. It comes in several colors, is metal, and the butterfly part is the back of it. Of course it will be the same green as everything else in my garden. kay

I took my 7 year old son to a big fabric store nearby (Berkeley) today. We were there for an hour and a half. (He wasn't looking at fabric the whole time--he took a book to read!) He wanted fabric to make a pillowcase for his bed, and he found the most adorable sock monkey fabrics by Moda. We also got one for my younger son, and I made his pillowcase when we got home. It is so cute, now I think I'd like to make a comforter cover to go with it. And while most store bought comforters have all those loose, annoying buttons along one end, I figure if I make it, I can use my closure of choice: the zipper. However, that will be one mighty long zipper. And, not surprisingly, I have "zipper phobia." Funny how my first project with bias tape called for 6 yards of the stuff applied in one continuous piece. Now my first zipper might be a looooong one across a comforter cover. I'm searching online for the best price for the fabric... I was all set to work on some more "aprons" but ones that I can actually wear outside the house (which is becoming fashionable, believe it or not). But after 90 minutes in this shop, I am sad to say I couldn't find any fabric that I liked. Well--I found lots that I liked, but it all had a specific orientation (e.g. not stripes, but dots or flowers or some other pattern that were nonetheless in ROWS). So if I didn't get it exactly straight across the front, it would drive me nuts. I picked up a cheap pattern for a kind of "babydoll" type top that involves...*gasp*...darts. But the measurements on the back are so odd. They don't correspond to typical sizes (that is, I normally wear a 6-8, but when I go by my actual bust, waist, him measurements on the package, it equals size 12). Hmmmmm. I'm looking for fabric for this one... I also want to make an oilcloth shopping bag type thing to carry my knitting in. Speaking of knitting, my son is eagerly waiting for me to finish a pair of socks for him. So many projects, so little time!! Let's see--what else: I played with all the cams on the T&S. They don't work very well though, b/c many of them require the fine stitch setting, and my fine stitch eats up the fabric like crazy (which also prevents me from doing buttonholes). And my bobbin now loads/fills about once in every 8 tries. So that is really frustrating! I wonder why? :-) From the other side of the fence.... Francy

Looking forward to the pics. When I went to the DL farm yesterday in PA I took a pic of the flower or clump and then a pic of its' name. That's how I know what it was afterwards. BTW, I never went to the one in LI you were asking about. The lady called me after 10pm the other night to see when I could come! I don't know about you, but if someone is calling me that late it had better be for something important. The late and unnecessary phone call totally turned me off.

I have so many pictures I don't know how I am going to organize them all. Just downloading them to photobucket now. Alittle more patience. I promise this tour is worth it, best yet. An acre and a half of glorious daylily paradise in a stunning garden.

I am sure you all gave up and went to watch TV or went to bed but the tour is up in three parts. Best if you start at one and continue in order.

Well, thats it for tonight. I am poofed and going to bed. I have no idea if I am going tomorrow or not. Not going to set the alarm clock so I guess it depends on whether I wake up late or not.

I am at home. I did not go this morning. It is at least as hot as yesterday again, I have sunburn on my shoulders (slightly) from yesterday when I forgot the sunblock and my desk is overrun with work that needs doing. The joys of working at home, doesn't matter what day it is, only that the work is there to be done. Plus I am really, really tired this morning.

I did so enjoy myself yesterday though that it was all worth it. Going to be sitting at my computer mostly today slogging thru my work that needs doing.
